Taking a pill vs maintaining pregnancy? How is a medical abortion performed? Medical abortion: drugs, technology, consequences

The content of the article:

Today, medical abortion is recognized as the most safe method interrupts unwanted pregnancy at an early stage. Medical termination of pregnancy is carried out using hormonal drugs. Indications, contraindications, description of the method, types of tablets, cost of the procedure, main pros and cons - more on this later in the article.

What is medical abortion

Medical abortion(aka pharmaceutical abortion or pharmabort) is a gynecological procedure to terminate a pregnancy without surgery, using medical supplies based on hormones. Pharmaceutical method carried out until the 7th week of pregnancy.

This is the most gentle method of terminating an unwanted pregnancy, as recognized by WHO. However, even pharmaceutical abortion does not always guarantee a successful result. Medical mini-abortion up to 42 days from the first day last menstrual period or with a delay of no more than 2 weeks from the date of the onset of menstruation, it is effective in 95% of cases, then the effectiveness of the use of abortive pills decreases.

Medical abortion does not affect a woman's fertility, and new pregnancy may occur one month after an abortion, so you should definitely take precautions.

Indications for medical abortion

There are no strict indications for pharmabort; the procedure is most often carried out at the woman’s request. Doctors strongly recommend that you take a test before the procedure. necessary tests to avoid complications.

Basic medical indications for pharmacobort

HIV infection;

Advanced form of syphilis;

Mental illnesses;

Oncological diseases;

Serious illnesses that threaten the life of the pregnant woman;

Hereditary genetic diseases;

High risk of embryo pathologies or miscarriage.

Social indications for abortion with medications

The mother's stay in prison;

Pregnant woman's age is up to 16 years;

Absence of a legal husband;

Group II-III disability in a born child.

Drugs for pharmaabortion

If you decide to have an abortion at home using pills, then you should familiarize yourself with the list of medications for medical abortion, which are most often used to terminate pregnancy:

1. Postinor is a popular emergency contraceptive drug that is used after unprotected sexual intercourse. The package contains 2 tablets that contain levonorgestrel (an analogue of progesterone). Method of administration: oral. The first tablet should be taken no later than 72 hours after unprotected intercourse, and the second - 12 hours after the first. According to doctors, this is not very reliable means, since pregnancy can be terminated only in 84% of cases. But it can be done independently at home without prior consultation with a gynecologist. The consequences of the action of postinor lead to hormonal imbalance.

2. Pencrofton is a synthetic hormonal drug for medical abortion. Produced in Russia. The main component of the drug mifepristone is a synthetic steroidal antiprogestogen that is used to prepare for an abortion. This drug is suitable for nulliparous women. Mifepristone does not cause many complications of abortion, such as infertility.

3. Mytholian is a medicine that is used for safe abortion, manufactured in China. The drug also contains mifepristone. The medication is used until the 7th week of pregnancy. The main component destroys the connection between the fetus and the uterus, resulting in a miscarriage. Also, with the help of medication, labor is stimulated.

4. Mifepristone is a drug that causes rejection ovum from the endometrium (inner surface of the uterus). It is recommended to take 3 tablets at once. The main component of the drug is mifepristone. Tablets are produced in Russia.

5. Mifeprex is an effective medication that is used for postcoital contraception. The drug is well tolerated by women up to 6 weeks of pregnancy. As a result of taking the drug, bloody discharge appears. The drug is produced in Russia.

6. Mifegin– a steroid drug for early termination of pregnancy. Country of origin: France. The components of the drug destroy the connection between the embryo and the uterus, and a miscarriage occurs.

These are the most popular names of drugs for medical abortion based on the synthetic steroid drug - mifepristone; there are many other analogues for terminating an unwanted pregnancy.

Description of the medical abortion procedure

The timing of a medical abortion is very limited; the procedure can be performed up to 6 weeks after the first day of the last menstrual period (or up to 7 weeks after the end of the last menstrual period). The most optimal period for performing a pharmaabortion is 4 weeks of pregnancy, since during this period the fetus is weakly attached to the endometrium. For more later there is a risk incomplete miscarriage.

In clinics, medical abortion is performed on the day of treatment; for this, the woman must first undergo an examination by a doctor to determine the presence and duration of pregnancy, the gynecologist must exclude ectopic pregnancy and contraindications to the procedure, the pregnant woman undergoes blood and urine tests, then an ultrasound is performed. After receiving all the examination results, the doctor makes a conclusion about the advisability of performing an abortion with medications.

Many women ask the question: “How is abortion done with pills?” Pharmaceutical abortion occurs in several stages:

1. A woman drinks 3 tablets of Mifepristone in the presence of a gynecologist who observes the patient for 2 hours. The tablets should be taken after meals, 1-1.5 hours later, with a glass of water. As a result of taking the drug, the connection between the uterus and the fertilized egg is destroyed and the embryo dies. Then the doctor recommends medications for the second stage of abortion. Normal phenomena after the first stage of pharmaabortion - nagging pain in the lower abdomen, bloody mucus is released from the vagina.

2. After 1.5–2 days, the woman takes prostaglandins that the doctor selected for her, for example, misoprostol. As a result of taking medications, the uterus begins to contract, and the fetus comes out of its cavity. Characteristic symptoms: nagging pain in the lower abdomen, discharge reminiscent of menstruation. After taking the drug, the woman is under the supervision of a doctor for 2 hours. The patient should strictly follow the doctor's instructions and take only the painkillers prescribed to her.

3. After 48 hours the woman passes ultrasonography. After 1 - 2 weeks, depending on how she feels, the patient should undergo a repeat gynecological examination and ultrasound examination.

If a medical abortion was unsuccessful, the pregnancy cannot be continued. It is necessary, if time permits, to do vacuum aspiration or surgical curettage.

Important! While taking medications containing mifepristone, it is not recommended to use non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, aspirin, diclofenac, analgin, etc., for 8-12 days.

How long does bleeding last after an abortion?

According to doctors, bleeding may not stop until the next menstruation, or may be scanty - the main thing is that the fertilized egg should come out, so after taking the drug you need to monitor the discharge. The next period should come from 20 to 50 days after the medical abortion.

Contraindications to medical abortion

Pharmaceutical abortion is a medical procedure that has a number of contraindications. It is prohibited to perform the procedure if you have an allergic reaction to the components of the drug or various diseases. The harm of medical abortion is obvious, despite the fact that the procedure is considered gentle.

Pharmaboration is prohibited in the following cases:

Hypersensitivity to mifepristone;

Development of the fetus outside the uterine cavity;

Diseases of the digestive tract;

Inflammatory diseases of the genital organs;

Benign tumor of the uterus;

Functional failure of the liver and kidneys;

Pregnancy that occurred while using intrauterine contraceptives (for example, a device);

Anemia and diseases of the blood coagulation system;

Anemia;

Taking corticosteroids and anticoagulants.

Women who smoke after 35 years of age should carry out the procedure with caution, as cardiovascular disorders may occur. Restrictions apply to women with scars on the uterus after surgery, hypertensive patients and lactating women. Nursing mothers after an abortion should transfer the newborn to artificial nutrition for 2 week.

Complications after medical abortion

Complications can occur even if the doctor and woman strictly follow all instructions:

Intensive uterine bleeding after a medical abortion;

Painful sensations in the lower abdomen;

Nausea, attacks of vomiting;

Loss of strength, dizziness;

Increased blood pressure, severe headache;

Temperature above 38°;

Allergy.

What to do if the test is positive after a medical abortion?

This condition indicates an incomplete abortion - this is a pathology in which the fertilized egg does not completely leave the uterus. This serious problem which requires surgical intervention, this means that the uterine cavity must be cleared of fetal remains. In this case, it is carried out vacuum cleaning or surgical curettage.

Cost of the procedure

Many women are interested in how much does a medical abortion cost? This procedure is not available to many, since Mifegin and Mifepristone are quite expensive, and it is impossible to find the drugs in pharmacies, since the procedure must be carried out under the supervision of a doctor. The total cost of a pharmabort is influenced by the following factors: the level of the chosen clinic, the quality and quantity of necessary studies, the manufacturer of the medications used (Mifegin is a French drug, and Mifepristone is Russian). The price range for Mifepristone is from 33 to 60 dollars (2000-4000 rubles), and for Mifegin - from 60 to 75 dollars (3800-5000 rubles). There is also a Chinese drug - Mifolian, which costs from 20 to 40 dollars (1100-2500 rubles).

Where can I get a medical abortion?

These drugs are distributed exclusively by pharmaceutical companies, and pharmaabortion with the help of these medications is carried out only in private clinics and in some public medical institutions.

The cost of a pharmaceutical abortion includes a consultation, gynecological examination, 2 ultrasounds and tests. In a small town clinic, the first appointment, if the tests are ready, will cost about 500 rubles. Tests that include smear and blood tests will cost 600 rubles. For an ultrasound examination you will pay about 550-800 rubles.

If you live in big city, then you will pay an average of 900-1800 rubles for tests. The remaining procedures with the drug will cost 5,000–8,000 rubles. If you are a resident of Moscow or St. Petersburg, then a medical abortion will cost from 5,000 to 14,500 rubles, this includes consultations, tests, drugs (the cheapest is Chinese, then Russian and the most expensive French) and 2 ultrasounds.

Pill abortions are a test for female body. A long delay after a pharmaceutical abortion is not normal. If the procedure is successful, your period may be delayed by 8–10 days. In most women, the menstrual cycle is quickly restored, since there was no mechanical damage to the uterus and hormonal disruptions were minimized.

A woman after a medical abortion is strictly prohibited from:

News sex life within 14 days after the abortion;

Engage in physical labor;

Take a bath or visit a sauna;

Carry out douching;

Supercool.

Only if these rules are followed will a woman recover faster. Otherwise, uterine bleeding or inflammation may occur.

After pharmaabortion, ovulation may change, because of this there is a risk repeat pregnancy in 10–12 days. Therefore, it is strongly recommended not to have sexual relations for 2 weeks after the procedure; in extreme cases, protect yourself with contraceptives. At quick recovery a woman can plan a pregnancy 12 weeks after pharmaabortion.

Pros and cons of the medication method

Tablet abortion has the following advantages

No anesthesia;

Minimal risk infection and injury to the uterus;

The procedure can be carried out from the first day of a missed period;

The woman recovers quickly after pharmaabortion;

Efficiency medicinal method– from 95% and above.

Abortion using the pill has its downsides

Incomplete removal of the ovum in 4–8% of cases;

High risk of bleeding from the uterine cavity;

There is no complete guarantee of disposal of the embryo;

A large number of contraindications and side effects.

Thus, if you decide to have an abortion, you have no contraindications, and the timing allows, then a pharmaceutical abortion is the best choice. In any case, consult a gynecologist and do not self-medicate, because the consequences can be the most terrible!

Medical termination of pregnancy is a chance to preserve your health, as women in many countries of the world know about how an artificially induced miscarriage occurs - at least 31, where it is allowed at the legislative level this procedure. It is effective and accessible.

The duration of medical termination of pregnancy in Russia is limited to six obstetric weeks. This is due to the fact that it is at this early stage that the greatest chance is to carry out the procedure without any complications, as painlessly as possible for the woman and effectively.

Advantages of the procedure compared to instrumental abortion

1. Does not require intravenous anesthesia. Thus, it avoids many problems associated with its side effects. For women, for example, a fairly common and significant consequence of anesthesia is excessive hair loss.

2. Does not require hospitalization. Although some women, on the contrary, want to have a medical termination of pregnancy in a clinic, because they are afraid that the pain will be too severe or heavy bleeding will begin.

3. Eliminates injuries to the cavity and cervix. This means that the risk of miscarriage does not increase next pregnancy. The risk of infertility does not increase.

4. Psychologically it is better tolerated by most women. Since there is no need to go to the hospital, to prepare for this procedure for a long time, to see the surgical instruments used to perform an abortion. All this is very mentally difficult.

5. Minimal risk of an inflammatory process in the uterus - endometritis. Since they don’t “climb” into the uterus, they don’t injure you, everything goes according to the type of menstruation.

We can definitely say that the consequences of medical termination of pregnancy, compared to instrumental ones, are minimal. And it is this type of abortion that is preferable for nulliparous women.

At the doctor's

You need to find a clinic, private or public, that has a license to perform this procedure (now almost everyone has one).

At the clinic you will be examined and have an ultrasound of the uterus. This study is considered basic, as it shows that the woman is indeed pregnant and the pregnancy is intrauterine.

Sometimes it happens that a woman comes after receiving positive result a pregnancy test, but the doctor does not find a fertilized egg in her uterus. This happens when very short term pregnancy, usually when the delay has not yet begun. There are now commercially available tests with very high sensitivity that show correct result not on the first day of the delay, but much earlier - 4-5 days before it starts. HCG level at the same time very small. To visualize the ovum, its level must reach at least 1000. And tests show correct result already at 10 units... The hCG level doubles every two days. It usually reaches this level already in the first week of delay. A pill abortion can be done if the delay is up to 2 weeks. There is time.

If an ultrasound showed a fertilized egg in the uterus, the doctor gives detailed description how medical abortion occurs, how you will feel and how to behave. After a conversation with a doctor, you need to read and sign an information consent, which will contain approximately the following points:

  • that the pregnancy is terminated deliberately;
  • if pregnancy progresses after taking the pills, it is advisable to terminate it, as there is a great risk to the child’s health;
  • information on how medical abortion is carried out has been received in full;
  • complications may arise in the process - bleeding, incomplete miscarriage, sometimes additional uterine curettage or vacuum aspiration is required;
  • an exacerbation of chronic infections may be provoked, resulting in infertility;
  • the woman undertakes to strictly follow all the doctor’s recommendations.

Description of the procedure

Medications for medical abortion are provided by a doctor. The first, Mifepristone, is taken by a woman in the presence of a doctor. A serious drug that blocks the action of progesterone, a hormone necessary for the development and nutrition of the fertilized egg. This medicine is not sold in pharmacies in dosages required to terminate a pregnancy. To avoid criminal abortions, as well as to ensure that the drug has worked, the woman should not vomit for 2 hours after taking it; the patient is asked to stay in the clinic during this time. And you are given with you an information sheet explaining what happens after taking the pills and how to act, a doctor’s phone number where you can get advice at any time, and a second drug, synthetic prostaglandin. It must be taken at home 36-48 hours after the first one.

And if after Mifepristone a woman could at most experience bloody discharge from the genital tract, then prostaglandin directly provokes detachment and release of the fertilized egg from the uterus. All this is accompanied by severe cramping pain. The effect appears almost immediately after taking it. Therefore you need to stay at home. After a miscarriage, the pain subsides.

Some women are also worried about nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, chills, and fever. These symptoms do not occur in everyone; this is the body’s individual reaction to the medication.

No-shpu and Baralgin are recommended as painkillers - that is, drugs from the group of antispasmodics and analgesics. But Ibuprofen, Diclofenac, Aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs should not be taken, as they can weaken the effect of the drugs prescribed by the doctor.

Discharge after medical termination of pregnancy is profuse, stronger than during menstruation. Rarely, acute bleeding does occur. This is if a sanitary pad is completely saturated within an hour, and this continues for 2-3 hours in a row. Then you need to urgently seek help. Doctors usually prescribe a hemostatic drug.

After a miscarriage, the discharge becomes much more abundant. However, they may small quantity keep for up to 14 days. Around this time, an ultrasound is performed, which should confirm a complete miscarriage. Otherwise, the woman will face vacuum aspiration. Signs of an incomplete miscarriage are pain in the uterus and ovaries, increased body temperature, prolonged bleeding, bad smell from the vagina, etc. Incomplete abortion leads to endometritis. And that leads to infertility, in the absence of treatment.

Most women do not lose their menstrual cycle after an artificial miscarriage. That is, menstruation after medical termination of pregnancy should be expected at the usual time. And if a woman starts taking oral contraceptives, then there are problems with calculating the start date critical days will not be. They will begin 3-7 days after taking 21 contraceptive tablets. Since few people plan pregnancy in the near future after a medical termination, this is a wonderful way out. And the cycle will be restored, and you won’t have to have new abortions.

Medical abortion is the termination of pregnancy, which is carried out without any surgical intervention - vacuum aspiration or cleaning of the uterus. This type of abortion has been practiced since 1985, but in Russia it is only gaining momentum. Not many people can afford it due to its high cost. But it is not always too expensive; there are options on how to save money without harming your health.

So, it will be much cheaper to terminate a pregnancy if you find a clinic where the domestic drug Mifepristone is used for this procedure. It doesn't have to be a highly touted clinic in the city center with famous doctors, expensive appointments and tests - all of which add to the cost of an abortion. In Russian regions you can find an option for about 5,000 rubles. In large cities it is more expensive, but not significantly.

Benefits of the procedure

But it's worth it because Negative consequences There are essentially no early medical abortions. Some difficulties may arise due to incomplete miscarriage. But this happens in literally 2-3% of all procedures. But a woman does not have stress due to gynecological manipulations, which are very painful, if without the use of high-quality anesthesia, there are no consequences for the reproductive system ( future pregnancy), since there is no inflammatory process, the cervix is not injured.

Indications and contraindications

pill abortion), where to start? From a visit to a gynecologist at a clinic that provides this type of abortion service. Not every clinic has a license for this. Your doctor must make sure that you are within the range of pregnancy limits for a pill abortion. And this is a maximum of 6 weeks. The period is determined not by simple calculation from the first day of the last menstruation indicated by the patient, but by the results of an ultrasound examination. The doctor sees the size of the fertilized egg and its location. Medical abortion is possible only during intrauterine pregnancy, and not due to the use of an intrauterine device (IUD).

But even if the pregnancy is due, the doctor may refuse the service if:

  • the woman is over 35 years old and smokes more than 20 cigarettes a day ( high risk cardiovascular pathology, which increases even more after taking a strong drug for miscarriage), with severe hypertension;
  • with low blood clotting;
  • with renal or liver failure;
  • intolerance to drugs used for abortion (active ingredients Mifepristone and Misoprostol).

Relative contraindications are poor smear analysis, negative Rh factor(the issue is resolved by administering anti-Rh globulin after an abortion to prevent Rh conflicts in subsequent pregnancies), sexually transmitted infections in the acute phase.

Doctor visits

At the first visit, the doctor conducts an examination, which we wrote about earlier. And if no contraindications are identified, he tells the patient in detail about medical abortion, what happens after taking the pills, what is normal and what is not. How to behave, can you take painkillers and what kind. Usually leaves your phone number for emergency consultation if it is needed after taking the drug.

Next, he gives out 3 tablets of Mifepristone. After this, the woman stays at the clinic for a short time and goes home. The doctor warns her that she may experience cramping pain and bloody discharge from the genital tract. This is the norm. Of the painkillers, it is better to give preference to Paracetamol, as the safest in this case. It does not interact in any way with the abortion drug.

But miscarriage occurs after taking Mifepristone only in a very small percentage of women. And after 36-48 hours, the woman should visit the doctor again to receive Misoprostol tablets. She also takes them in the presence of a doctor and stays in the clinic for 2 hours. Then he goes home.

After taking this drug, cramping pain and bleeding intensify. The fertilized egg and its membranes are rejected. The endometrium comes out of the uterus in clots. Heavy discharge can last up to 3 days, and moderate discharge, as during menstruation, can last up to 14 days. Urgent health care only required for severe bleeding. When two people get wet in 1 hour sanitary napkin and more. But this is rare.

And finally, the third visit after 10-14 days. The doctor performs an ultrasound examination to make sure that the miscarriage was complete. Otherwise, you will have to do vacuum aspiration. Even if the embryo continued to develop and the woman changed her mind about having an abortion. Since the drugs had the most Negative influence for a child, he will not be born full-fledged.

After a miscarriage

What happens to a woman’s body after a medical abortion, when can she conceive a child again? At once. 75% of women ovulate in the first menstrual cycle after an abortion. That is, fertility is not affected. Moreover, the child can be left behind, since medications taken 2-3 weeks before conception will no longer have a negative effect on him.

But if pregnancy is not included in the plans, reliable contraception is needed. Doctors recommend oral contraceptives or the installation of an intrauterine system.

If a woman needs to terminate her pregnancy early, a medical abortion can be used, which involves taking certain medications. Medicines for this procedure cause the embryo to be rejected and promote its exit from the uterine cavity. This method of abortion is simple to perform, does not injure organs, but can cause damage women's health.

What is medical abortion

Termination of pregnancy, which is carried out using a technique medicines, is called “medical” or “pharmaceutical abortion”. The action of the procedure is determined by the effect special substance– mifepristone, which blocks the production of progesterone. Additionally, drugs with prostaglandin are prescribed, which enhance uterine contractions. As a result, the inner layer of the female organ separates along with the fertilized egg. The process in its structure is a miscarriage provoked artificially.

Indications

In most cases, a medical mini-abortion is carried out at the request of the woman herself, however, there are some medical and social indications for such a procedure:

  • presence of HIV infection;
  • mental illness;
  • mother's prison in prison;
  • oncological diseases;
  • the first child has a disability;
  • syphilis in neglected form;
  • genetic pathologies;
  • pregnancy before 16 years of age;
  • high degree risk of severe embryo pathologies;
  • diseases that threaten the mother's life.

Advantages

Any abortion procedure cannot be called absolutely safe, however, tableted medical abortion has several advantages:

  • during its implementation, surgical instruments are not used, the impact of which can cause infection;
  • pharmaceutical abortion avoids mechanical damage to a woman’s organs;
  • the procedure is carried out early, which helps to avoid great harm psychological state women;
  • Medical abortion does not require anesthesia;
  • This method of terminating a pregnancy is easy to perform and involves taking pills in a strictly defined sequence, under the supervision of a doctor.

Preparing for medical abortion

The medical method of termination of pregnancy, like other types of abortion, requires preparation related to the conduct of relevant research:

  • Ultrasound – with its help, the period of conception is determined, on the basis of which a decision is made about the possibility of the procedure.
  • An examination by a gynecologist will help determine the presence of pathologies of a woman’s reproductive organs.
  • Laboratory tests are carried out: blood tests to determine HIV, syphilis, hepatitis, blood type and Rh factor.

How it goes

The procedure for medical abortion consists of several stages:

  1. At the first stage, studies are carried out and analyzed aimed at determining the duration of pregnancy and the presence of pathologies in a woman.
  2. A qualified specialist prescribes drugs with the active ingredient mifepristone, setting a certain dose. After taking the pills, the woman should be under the supervision of a doctor for 2 hours. The specialist monitors the patient’s condition, records complaints and possible bleeding.
  3. After 1.5-2 days, the patient needs to take prostaglandins, which should be taken according to the doctor’s recommendation in a certain dosage. At this stage, the fertilized egg is released. This process is characterized by the appearance sharp pain, increased blood secretions. The intensity of these manifestations depends on individual characteristics body.
  4. On final stage The doctor conducts the examination again. An ultrasound should be done 4 days after the procedure to confirm that there are no signs of pregnancy inside the uterus. The last ultrasound control will be required in 7-14 days.

Drugs for medical abortion

To perform a medical abortion, doctors may prescribe the following drugs:

  • Pencrofton is a synthetic drug based on mifepristone. The medicine is suitable for nulliparous girls, as it will help avoid a number of complications.
  • Mifolian - produced in China, used for safe abortion. The tablets can be used up to 7 weeks after expected conception. Its active substance helps to destroy the connection between the fetus and the uterus, causing miscarriage.
  • Mifegin is a steroid medicine used for pharmaceutical abortions in the early stages. The components of the product provoke miscarriage, disrupting the connection between the uterus and the embryo.
  • Mifeprex – effective remedy Russian production, intended for medical termination of pregnancy. It should be used for up to 6 weeks. After use, bloody discharge appears.

Mifepristone

The substance mifepristone is included in most abortion medications. by medication. A drug of the same name is also produced, which is manufactured in Russia. The active substance promotes the rejection of the fertilized egg from inner surface uterus - endometrium. Medicines containing mifepristone block the synthesis of progesterone, a hormone necessary for normal course pregnancy. In order for the rejected fertilized egg to be expelled faster, doctors prescribe prostaglandins (Misoprostol), which increase the ability of the uterus to contract.

What happens after medical termination of pregnancy

The result of the medical abortion can be positive or negative. The first option is to completely cleanse the uterus and gradually restore the body. Experts cannot exclude a negative result, since incomplete cleansing of a woman’s reproductive system will be noticeable only after a few days, when a control study is carried out. Pregnancy after an abortion that was not successful cannot be maintained, so additional procedures(vacuum aspiration, curettage) – the fertilized egg should not remain inside.

Consequences

One of frequent consequences The medical method of terminating pregnancy is a violation of the cycle, a delay in menstruation, a change in the timing of ovulation, and bleeding may occur. In this regard, experts recommend abstaining from sexual intercourse for 2 weeks. The use of reliable contraceptives is permitted, but they are not always effective. If the recovery process occurs quickly, a woman will be able to plan her pregnancy 3 months after the medical abortion procedure.

Severe consequences can be observed from the psycho-emotional sphere. Some women suffer psychological trauma. This condition is characterized by the occurrence of neuroses and depression. Such consequences are rarely recorded, since abortion occurs in the early stages. If you experience uncomfortable emotions and disturbances nervous system, you need to start working with a psychologist to overcome your problem and return to normal life.

Contraindications

  • diseases of the female reproductive organs and gastrointestinal tract that are inflammatory in nature;
  • offensive ectopic pregnancy or suspicion of it;
  • conception when using intrauterine contraceptives;
  • diagnosis or suspicion of fibroids;
  • less than 6 weeks of pregnancy;
  • impaired blood clotting ability;
  • severe or moderate anemia;
  • allergic reaction to the components of the pharmaceutical drug;
  • adolescence;
  • liver and kidney failure of any severity.

Complications

After medical termination of an unwanted pregnancy, the following complications are possible:

  • high intensity uterine bleeding;
  • attacks of nausea and vomiting;
  • pain in the lower abdomen;
  • general feeling of weakness in the body, dizziness;
  • increase in body temperature to a level exceeding 30 degrees;
  • increased blood pressure, intense headaches;
  • allergic reaction.

Absolutely for any medical procedure there may be a risk of any complications and medical abortion no exception at all! Undoubtedly, today pharmacological abortion is considered one of the most gentle methods of terminating an unwanted pregnancy, however, it is absolutely not without serious consequences and sometimes the complications for a woman are very, very serious and dangerous.

In addition, one cannot be 100% sure that pharmacological abortions end only conservatively, since there are cases, quite often, when doctors have to perform curettage of the uterine cavity, which is fraught with serious consequences!

Medical abortion

Medication abortion carried out using drugs from the antiprogestin group. As a rule, these drugs include Mifepristone. Antiprogestins also include: RU486, Pencrafton and Mifegin - the action of which is to block progesterone-sensitive receptors. As a result of this process, the uterus begins to contract intensively and pushes out the embryo.

Complications

1) The development of complications after medical abortion is associated with hormonal changes occurring after taking abortifacient drugs.

2) Pharmacological abortion is usually performed on an outpatient basis, and for the vast majority of women, termination of pregnancy occurs directly at home without the supervision of a doctor. Thus, the patient is often unable to adequately assess a particular situation and, accordingly, seek medical help in a timely manner.

3) The occurrence of complications directly depends on the woman’s age, her concomitant diseases, availability bad habits and much more.

To the most dangerous complications Medical abortion include:

Progressive pregnancy

Sometimes, after taking Mifepristone, the embryo is not expelled from the uterine cavity. In this case, the woman does not have the expected menstruation, but signs of toxicosis (nausea, vomiting) persist. After a pregnancy test and gynecological examination, as well as an ultrasound of the pelvic organs developing pregnancy– confirmed! In this situation, removal of the fetus is only possible surgically(i.e., curettage of the uterine cavity)!

Bleeding

Soon after taking abortifacients, a woman experiences heavy uterine bleeding, which is directly related to the rejection of the fertilized egg and decidua. Typically, such bleeding continues for 2-3 days, gradually turning into spotting, which can continue for 3-4 weeks, which, of course, causes great discomfort to the woman.

But besides the meager bloody discharge Heavy bleeding may occur, which can be fatal! Profuse uterine bleeding requires immediate curettage of the uterine cavity. Profuse bleeding can be the cause of disorders of the blood coagulation system under the influence of colossal doses of hormonal drugs and the presence of remnants of the fertilized egg.

Side effects of Mifepristone

Dangerous complications of medical abortion include side effect medications that cause: nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, weakness, severe pain lower abdomen, elevated temperature and diarrhea. Very often they are so pronounced that they require immediate hospitalization, with repeated use of abortifacients, which significantly impairs general state women.

Overdose

When taking Mifepristone in a dose that exceeds 2 grams, some women experience acute adrenal insufficiency.

Interaction

Using this drug with other medications, for example, aspirin, may not provide the desired abortifacient effect! Mifepristone should absolutely not be used with other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

Hormonal imbalance

Pharmacological abortion can cause the development of various hormonal disorders (menstrual cycle, formation of cysts, ovary, amenorrhea).

Allergic reactions

Medical abortion may cause severe allergies in some patients, often expressed as skin rash, sometimes urticaria.

Nervous system disorders

Medical abortion, like other types of abortion, is a severe shock and stress for any normal woman! Sometimes the experiences are so severe that they often lead to the development of depression, neuroses and even mental disorders!

N.B. Our clinic does not provide medical abortion services!
