Chairs are the most commonly used pieces of furniture. That is why they age quite quickly and acquire a nondescript appearance. Many owners immediately send worn-out chairs to the scrap heap, but if you wish, you can restore them to their former attractiveness. Decorating chairs with your own hands will help breathe into them new life. In addition, you can decorate the interior in the same way for a holiday - a wedding, New Year or birthday.

Decorating chairs does not require much labor or materials. All you need is a few fabric ribbons and a little imagination.

In order to restore the aesthetic appearance of old chairs, there are several simple ways, each of them can be successfully used at home. Everything you need for decoration can be purchased at any shopping center.

Decorating chairs using fabric

There are often situations when, during renovation, owners completely change the colors of the walls and the furniture no longer matches the new interior. What to do? It’s a pity to throw away comfortable and high-quality chairs. Decorating chairs with fabric will come in handy here.

The main thing with this method of updating chairs is to choose a durable and reliable material that matches the color of the finish. It can be microfiber, jacquard or furniture silk, but most craftsmen still recommend using tapestry. This fabric is characterized by high wear resistance and durability due to the inclusion of artificial fibers in its composition.

If you need to decorate chairs for the holiday, you can choose a more elegant fabric with thematic patterns, without paying attention to its performance characteristics, because when the holiday will pass, the decor from the chairs will be removed. If we are talking about reupholstering furniture to meet the requirements of a new interior, the material must be very durable, easy to clean and not subject to contamination.

In addition to the fabric, you will need to prepare the following tools and materials:

  • a piece of foam rubber;
  • thin batting;
  • furniture braid or tape;
  • construction stapler;
  • furniture glue;
  • sandpaper;
  • scissors;
  • pliers;

First of all, you need to pay attention to the reliability of the chair design. If it is old enough, creaks and wobbles, all parts need to be disassembled, the fastening points checked for strength, and the grooves cleaned sandpaper, removing irregularities, and then put the structure back together, gluing the parts with furniture glue.

If the chair is strong and reliable, you can immediately begin decorating. To do this, place a piece of foam rubber corresponding to the size of the seat on the base. Then the foam rubber is covered with a sheet of batting, which has an allowance on each side 5 cm larger than the size of the seat. The third layer will be a piece of fabric the same size as the batting. The batting and fabric are folded under the base of the seat and secured on the underside using a staple gun. Excess material is trimmed with scissors.

When cutting material for decorating chairs, close attention should be paid to the location of the design or pattern. It is better if it is located in the center of the seat. In order to correctly position the pattern, it is advisable to first mark the fabric with a pencil or chalk, and only then cut out the parts.

Decorating the back of a chair is similar to decorating a seat: first, foam rubber is applied to the element, then batting and fabric. The edges of the batting and fabric are folded over and secured to the chair using a stapler. In order to hide the paper clips, the seams are decorated with thick braid or tape. Transparent wood glue is used to attach it.

Decorating chairs using decoupage technique

Today, decoupage is one of the most popular methods of decoration. This great way decoration not only of accessories such as boxes, bottles, vases and much more, but also of furniture. Decoupage finishing is suitable for completely wooden or plywood chairs that do not have soft backs or seats.

In order to decorate the chairs, you will need to prepare:

  • clean dry cloth;
  • container with water;
  • sandpaper;
  • wood putty;
  • putty knife;
  • any furniture paint (preferably white);
  • paint brush;
  • PVA glue;
  • napkins for decoupage or pictures;
  • clear varnish for furniture.

Before decorating the chairs, you need to check all connections for strength.

First of all, it is necessary to thoroughly clean the surface to be decorated from dust and dirt. Then it should be sanded and puttied. When the putty has dried, the surface is again sanded until smooth. It is advisable to apply at least two layers of putty, making them as thin as possible.

After this, the chair can be painted with any paint desired color, but experts recommend using white paint on water based, because it is on a white background that decoupage looks most advantageous. When painting, remember that it is necessary to use fresh dye, since the old composition after drying may acquire yellowish color or peel off.

Then drawing with special napkins or the pictures must be transferred to the seat of the chair. You can do this as follows:

  1. All the necessary elements are cut out from special napkins or pictures. In this case, each drawing should have an indentation from the edge of about 3 mm.
  2. A layer of PVA glue, slightly diluted with water, is applied to the surface to be treated.
  3. The cut out elements of the design are dipped in a container of water for a few minutes, then blotted with a clean, dry rag or towel. A layer of glue is also applied to them.
  4. The workpiece is applied to the surface to be processed and smoothed. Excess glue is removed. This way all parts of the decoration are glued on.

When the elements are dry, you need to finish painting the piece of furniture. To do this, use a mixture of equal proportions of PVA glue, white paint and water. Painting should begin with the decoration elements, using a small brush to paint over the contours of the design, then you need to take a large brush and paint the entire seat. When the paint has dried, the treated surface must be covered with several layers of transparent acrylic varnish. Each coat takes about 24 hours to dry, so varnishing may take 3-4 days.

In this way, you can decorate not only chairs, but also a stool. Without a doubt, he will become the thing appearance which will be surprised not only by relatives, but also by guests.

Decorating with jute rope

Decor made from natural jute will create an atmosphere of comfort and warmth in the apartment. In addition, it can become a beautiful accent to highlight the style of the interior. To decorate chairs with jute you need to prepare:

You need to wrap the stool with jute as tightly as possible, gluing the rope where it cannot be secured.

  • a piece of fabric of a suitable color;
  • rope made of jute or sisal with a thickness of at least 3.5 mm;
  • stapler;
  • glue;
  • ruler and pencil;
  • scissors;
  • hammer;
  • wallpaper studs.

First, you need to remove the old upholstery from the seat. Then the entire structure is wrapped with rope. The working technique is as follows: the edge of the rope is fixed to inside legs, back or other part of the structure using a bracket or nail. After this, the entire structure is tightly wrapped with rope. The other end of the rope is fixed in the same way.

In those places where the rope cannot be secured or nailed, it must be glued to the base using wood glue, hiding the ends. To make the decoration look more harmonious, you can remove the middle from the back of the chair, leaving only the base of the structure, and weave it with a rope, covering the central empty part of the back. Weaving should be done in the form of a mesh with large or small cells.

Instead of the old upholstery, the seat is covered new fabric. To do this, a piece is cut out of the material, the dimensions of which are 5 cm larger on each side of the seat. The edges of the fabric are tucked under the seat and secured with a construction stapler. You can drive decorative wallpaper nails along the outer side of the seat to secure the fabric drapery.

Decoupage technique

Decorating chairs does not end with fabric techniques, since you can also decorate chairs with your own hands using a technique called “decoupage.” This is a very popular and widespread decoration technique, as well as small items, and large furniture. Its essence lies in applying the desired design or pattern to the surface of the chair. The thickness of the paper with the picture should be very thin, so you should choose pictures among multi-layer holiday napkins for the table. Yes, yes, these napkins have the right thickness (if you remove the white layers and leave the main color) and incredibly huge selection drawing. These can be either beautiful flowers for a chair at a woman’s dressing table in the bedroom, or animals for a children’s high chair.

Having removed the unnecessary white layers of the napkin and leaving only the colored one, we cut out the necessary details and decorative elements. Be careful, as the density of this paper is minimal, and the napkin will tear if handled carelessly. Apply a thin layer of PVA glue solution to a clean and smooth surface of the chair. Then we apply the cut out elements and coat the top with another equally thin layer of solution with a brush. We smooth out possible wrinkles on the parts (just don’t tear them), and absorb the excess glue with a towel. After drying, cover the surface of the chair with a solution of PVA glue, water and white paint, and then with transparent construction varnish.

We knit clothes ourselves

If the housewife is wondering how to decorate chairs with her own hands in order to create additional comfort in the room, then the knitting technique can help with this. Using multi-colored threads we create an unusual chair design. To do this, you need to knit a cover for it. Of course, the pattern and color scheme should be selected individually in accordance with the general ambience of the room. But such a handmade design will always look original, enlivening your home and charging it with positive energy.

Holiday decorations

If in Everyday life If you don’t think about how to decorate chairs with your own hands, then during the holidays this task is an integral part of decorating the festive table and the room as a whole.

For example, in New Year you can decorate the chairs with thematic elements. No one forces you to sew new upholstery or covers. Although, you must agree, a case in the shape of Santa would look very harmonious with festive table. It’s enough to simply make New Year’s decorations from balls, rain, garlands or bells.

And for wedding table there is a very original idea. Since a large number of guests are usually invited, it is very appropriate to decorate the chairs with special signs with the names of relatives and friends in order to avoid confusion and inappropriate showdowns that are expected on such a day.

Available to everyone

When we decorate our home for the holidays, decorating the chairs is the last thing we think about, if at all. Well, unless we're talking about big holiday– for example, about a wedding. When preparing for a wedding banquet, many people remember that it would be nice to take care of beautiful chair covers.

Fortunately, you don’t have to sew chair covers for a wedding yourself: almost all restaurants and organizations that provide catering services have in their arsenal the entire range of festive table textiles: tablecloths, banquet skirts, napkins and covers. Chair covers can be rented for a certain period of time. Another option is to contact an agency that specializes in fabrics. Professionals will decorate chairs with beautiful draperies, ribbons, bows made of silk or organza.

However decorate chairs It is possible not only for, but also for any other holiday. After all, it’s not at all difficult to do this, but how the place of celebration will be transformed! There is another problem that can be solved with the help of chair decor. Often, when we gather a large number of guests in the house, we use mismatched chairs, which, of course, does not look very nice. The same or similar decor will make the chairs similar friend on a friend.

Let's talk about how you can decorate chairs for the holiday.

Decor of chairs for a festive feast

1. Fabric covers for chairs. Fabric on chairs is the most common and most formal way. It is worth saying that this method is also the most expensive when it comes to decorating chairs. But it's worth it!

As already mentioned, ready-made covers or fabrics for drapery can be rented, paying professionals for the actual “dressing” of the chairs. But you won’t rent it every time if there’s a home holiday coming up.

It will be easier to sew it once required quantity covers and take them out in front special holidays. To add zest to the decor, making it unique every time, use additional decors: colored ribbons, wide stripes of organza, artificial flowers and so on.

You can do without sewing and simply drape the chairs with large pieces of fabric, tying it up bright ribbons. But there are some difficulties here: firstly, you need to figure out how to beautifully drape the chair so that the fabric does not slip and cause discomfort to the person sitting. Secondly, you will need a lot of fabric. It’s easier to spend time or money once and sew the covers yourself or order sewing from a seamstress.

Sewing chair covers is not very difficult. The main difficulty is that all chair models are different, so choose a universal one chair cover pattern almost impossible. However, it is not at all that difficult to make a pattern yourself. First you need to decide on the type of case.

Next, you need to decide how many parts the chair cover will be made from. For example, the back, seat and front of the seat skirt can be made from a single piece of fabric. All that remains is to sew in the side parts of the seat skirt, adding folds or making scallops.

However, the case can be more complex, consisting of many more parts - it depends on its model. For beginners in sewing, it is better to choose a simpler option that requires a minimum of seams.

Here are the parts a chair cover can be made from:

Letter designations: A - height of the back of the chair, B - depth of the chair seat (with ties it is not necessary to observe this value - you can make them narrower, then it will be easier to sew in), C - distance from the edge of the chair seat to the floor or slightly higher, D - turn up, E – width of the tie, F – height of the entire chair from the top of the back to the floor.

And the result might look like this:

But let’s continue the conversation about making unique patterns for specific chairs. Having decided on the number of parts, you need to measure the chair and taken measurements cut out future parts of the cover - rectangles and squares with a decent supply of fabric. You can cut them, for example, from an old sheet.

Apply the cut pieces of fabric to the desired areas of the chair. Fasten the parts together with safety pins (if you don’t have them, you can baste them with thread right on the spot), and cut off the excess.

When the chair is completely covered with this improvised cover, label each detail so that you don’t get confused later, where is the top, where is the bottom, where is the back, and where is part of the skirt of the cover. Remove the pieces from the chair and use them as a pattern.

Cut out the pieces from good fabric and start sewing. If you are new to sewing, start by joining the pieces together with a simple hand stitch and try on the cover. If he sat on the chair like a glove, you can go to the sewing machine.

Here is a video that uses the described method of creating a pattern for a case. The video is in English, but the video sequence is quite informative even without words.

2. Fabric covers for the back of the chair. It is much easier and cheaper to sew covers only for the backs of chairs. If the chairs themselves look good, then by decorating the backs with interesting covers, you will bring festive changes to the interior in just a few minutes.

Well, sewing such a chair cover is quite simple: you just need to measure the height of the back and its width. Moreover, the width will have to be measured in several places if the back expands upward. Add a few centimeters to the thickness of the back and seams. Make a pattern, cut out one piece, baste it and try it on. After trying it on, make changes to the pattern if necessary, and start sewing. True, the covers for the backs of chairs may not be simple, but, as they say, with pretensions, but this is for experienced dressmakers.

Chair back covers it’s better to make it white - in this case you can use a unique design for each holiday: for example, by sewing buttons-eyes and a carrot-nose, you can easily turn a classic white cover for the back of a chair into a snowman cover. On Valentine's Day, you can decorate the covers by sewing fabric hearts onto them, and pin numbers cut out of paper corresponding to the age of the birthday person.

3. Fabric decor of chairs. Decorating chairs with small pieces of fabric will cost much less. But it must be very beautiful fabric: silk, gauze, organza, guipure, chiffon, etc. A wide strip of fabric can be tied in an original way to the crossbar of the back of a chair or tied with fabric to the top of the back. There are many options.

4. Ribbons for decorating chairs. Tapes are a win-win provided that the chairs themselves look quite good. Tapes are quite cheap, and there are a lot of options for using them.

For chairs with a crossbar between the legs, you can take several narrow but long ribbons for each chair - one end of the tape is tied to the crossbar on the back, and the other to the crossbar at the bottom. A few ribbons tied to a chair will instantly transform it. And the room will immediately become more elegant and brighter!

If the holiday takes place on outdoors, tie several ribbons to the back bar, and leave the other end of the ribbon free. The ribbons will flutter in the wind, creating magnificent visual effects.

Ribbons can be tied diagonally across the back or wrapped around the crossbars of a chair. You can make a flower out of ribbon and tie it to the back.

5. Wreaths for decorating chairs. This option is more complicated than the method of decorating with ribbons. A wreath can be made from anything. For example, weave it from twigs, wrap it with ribbon and decorate it with artificial or fresh flowers.

Wreaths are also made from intertwined pieces of wire, wrapped with ribbons or beautiful paper and adding any decorative elements, corresponding to the holiday: for example, cones, tangerines and Christmas balls For New Year's wreaths, pacifiers and bottles - for , shiny " magic wands» to decorate a princess party, etc. Wreaths for can be made from plastic eggs, connecting them into rings.

The finished wreaths are tied to the back of the chair with ribbon. By the way, a wreath can become - at the end of the holiday, guests can remove the wreaths from their chairs and take them with them as a souvenir.

6. Balloons for decorating chairs. inflate air balloons and tie them to the backs of the chairs. Fast, cheap and very simple.

7. Gifts of nature for decorating chairs. Beads made from apples or tied to the backs of chairs are very beautiful. Very often, fresh and artificial flowers are used to decorate chairs - mainly for decoration. wedding banquet. On autumn holiday you can decorate the chairs yellow leaves, collecting them in bunches, tying them with twine and tying them with an elegant ribbon. chairs can be decorated with beads made from pine cones and spruce branches.

Decor of chairs for a children's party

Make chairs for children's party bright and funny! If, for example, you're throwing a pet party or a safari-themed kids' party, buy cheap animal masks and tie them to the back of each chair.

You can turn chairs into “cars”: find images of car brand symbols, print them in a fairly large format, stick them on cardboard, make holes, run a string or narrow tape and hang the symbols from the backs of the chairs. Cut out wheels from cardboard, draw treads on them, and use double-sided tape to attach the wheels to each chair leg.

Whatever it is, you can always find something interesting chair decoration , corresponding to the concept. For example, cut suitable pictures from old children's magazines and glue them onto a cardboard base bigger size. On four sides cardboard base make holes, insert strings or braid and tie the resulting “sign” to back side the backs of each chair.

To amuse children, put “socks” on chair legs. These may be specially knitted striped cases, but you can buy ordinary bright high socks or very small size and before the holiday, put them on the legs of the chairs, tying them, if necessary, with thread so that they do not fall off. The kids will love it.
