How to choose the right fabric for making bed linen?

Firstly, you need to decide for what size bed the bed will be sewn.
If this is a crib, we choose calico with a children's pattern with a canvas width of 150 cm.
If you sew for a 1.5 bed, then choose calico 150 cm wide.
If the bed or sleeping area big size(you won’t believe it, but there are many who prefer to sleep not on a bed or even on a sofa, but simply on the floor, for example, the Japanese), 2 bedroom, Euro, then choose calico 220 cm wide.

We recommend choosing a fabric made from 100% cotton, and dense calico fabric is best for a beginner seamstress. The surface density of coarse calico of 120 g / m2 will be enough.

So, the type, color and pattern of the fabric is chosen, but you do not know how many meters of fabric will be required? In order not to make a mistake in the calculation, you can measure the length and width of the mattress, blanket and pillows. In addition, you can simply take the dimensions of the old bedding set for a sample and add 7-8 centimeters to it, in order to allow for seam allowances and cut inaccuracy.

You can navigate the choice the right amount fabrics from the table below.

  1. To sew baby bedding for a baby crib from a 150 cm wide fabric, 4 meters of fabric are required.

    Composition of the bed linen set: - duvet cover measuring 143 x 217 cm. - 2 pcs. - a sheet measuring 220 x 240 cm. - 1 pc. - pillowcase measuring 50 x 70 cm. - 2 pcs. - pillowcase measuring 70 x 70 cm. - 2 pcs.

Tips for cutting bed linen at home

The lapel of the pillowcase (valve) should be at least 25 cm long. Add another 20 cm to the width of the sheet to enable the sheet to be tucked under the mattress. Add 6-7 centimeters to the width of the duvet cover to compensate for the shrinkage of the fabric after washing.

For an example of how to sew bed linen with your own hands, let's take a standard, double set of bed linen, and the fabric calculation for it is done as follows:
The total fabric will need 7.45 m. This is for a canvas width of 220 cm. This length will be quite enough to make full ones: one duvet cover, a sheet and three pillowcases measuring 70 by 70 or three pillowcases with sides measuring 50 by 70 cm.
We measure and cut off from a solid canvas 365 cm for a duvet cover. The result is a rectangle 365 by 220 cm.
We measure and cut off from the remaining canvas 175 cm for the sheet. The result is a rectangle 220 by 175 cm.
The remaining 175 x 220 cm are divided into three or four identical parts, depending on what size pillowcases will be needed.

How to cut a sheet for a double bed?

We cut and sew a sheet on our own, taking for example a bed 190 cm long and 140 cm wide at the rate of 16 cm per sheet fold on each side. We cut a rectangle 190+3+5%=203 cm long. 140+(2*16)+(2*20)+3+5%=225 cm wide.

How to cut a duvet cover for a double bed?

We cut a duvet cover for a double blanket 205 cm long and 175 cm wide. We cut a rectangle 205 + 3 + 5% = 218 cm long. It is desirable to cut the length so that one side is with an edge. Width 175*2+1.5+5%=369 cm.

How to cut pillowcases with your own hands?

We cut 2 pillowcases measuring 70 * 70 cm. For one pillowcase we cut a rectangle 70 + 70 + 20 + 3 + 5% = 152 cm long and 70 + 3 + 5% = 77 cm wide.

We begin to sew bedding with our own hands when the patterns are ready.
If you got to this point while reading our article on how to sew bed sheets on your own, so you can do it.

A little advice. Before making the next line, it is desirable to iron the fold, after which it will be a lot to sew. Seams should be done in a straight line.

How to sew a sheet with your own hands?

To sew a sheet, cuts from four sides are hemmed with a double hem, it is necessary to turn the cut inside out twice by 0.7 cm and stitch to the edge, that is, by 1-2 mm. from the fold.

How to sew a duvet cover with your own hands?

Fold the fabric in half along its width front side inside. We divide the lower part of the folded cut in half and in both directions and make a mark of 30 cm. It turns out 60 cm in the middle. We sew from the edge 1.5 cm. You should get a window in the middle. The resulting seam must be ironed, and the window stitched. From the edge - 5 mm. Then turn the duvet cover right side out and sew 3-5 mm from the two remaining sides. from the edge. Then we turn the duvet cover inside out again and sew close to the seam, at a distance of 5-7 mm. As a result, raw sections will remain inside the seam.

How to sew pillowcases with your own hands?

To sew pillowcases on your own, cuts from two sides of the width (or one, if the second is an edge) are hemmed with a double hem (turn the cut inside out twice by 0.7 cm and stitch to the edge, that is, 1-2 mm from the fold. Then we fold the pillowcase in such a way that a 20 cm flap is inside between two layers of fabric.On both sides of the length we sew 3-5mm from the edge.After that, turn the pillowcase inside out and sew close to the seam, at a distance of 5-7mm. As a result, the raw sections will remain inside the seam.

Today I want to tell you and show you with an example how to sew bedding with your own hands at home. It happens that spouses buy themselves a large family bed, for example, 2 m wide. And the blanket remains a standard double one - 1.8 m (well, they didn’t have time or didn’t want to buy more - they are so warm and comfortable under it). Bed linen manufacturers do not focus on such eccentrics - and offer for sale either designed entirely for an ordinary bed, or sets sewn for a large bed. Or, perhaps, it is convenient for you when two separate blankets lie on the bed (for example, I have it - my husband spends the night under one, under the other I and the younger kinder settled down). Or three pillows. Or four - that's all different size. Of course, not a single manufacturer will provide for all your wishes of this kind - and therefore it is sometimes easier to sew bed linen on your own than to look for a ready-made suitable set for sale.
In addition, at right approach and the right choice of fabric, you can easily save a certain amount Money sewing a set of bed linen with your own hands at home. Of course, this statement will not be true if you suddenly decide to buy the highest quality and most expensive silk for sheets and duvet covers, however, having gone to the wholesale depot and choosing a budget option(satin or calico, cotton or chintz), you can meet a fairly modest amount, for which you definitely cannot purchase a ready-made kit.

We sew bedding with our own hands - a master class

We will need:

Actually, the fabric;
- tailor's meter and pins,
- scissors,
- long ruler;
- threads;
- sewing machine;
- some free time;
- a little bit of patience;
- a lot of desire ...

Photo 1: First, about the choice of fabric. Satin is best suited for sewing bed linen - a fabric of a special weave, which consists of cotton and synthetic fibers. This increases the "life" of the set, and in addition, linen will delight you with a smooth and silky surface and a noble sheen.
Also suitable for tailoring and coarse calico, but it will feel rougher. I do not recommend taking chintz - it is very thin and will quickly end its service. In addition, when washing, it tends to deform. You can take any fabric in width for sewing bedding - and 160 cm will do, and 220 ...
I won’t write anything about the size of the fabric on purpose - it all depends on the number of pillowcases, the size of the pillows and the mattress. But the most convenient option is to take measurements from your favorite old set - you don’t have to do math, all allowances for free fit are taken into account ...
If such a set is not yet available, I recommend adding 3 cm to the measurements of the width and length of the pillowcase, and 5 cm in width to the measurements of the blanket ...
But just in case - when laying out a fabric with a width of 220 cm, we need fabrics: the length of the sheet + 2 x the length of the blanket + 2 x the width (or length) of the pillowcase + all seam allowances.

Photo 2: Any sewing begins with decathing - and bedding, and even more so. The fabric must be washed at a water temperature of about 60 degrees so that it "sits down". By the way, you can take 30 cm of the same fabric as a sample, wash it and estimate how much it has shrunk - sometimes it happens that the fabric shrinks by as much as 10%.

Photo 3: In the process of drying, we do not overdry the fabric and iron it with an iron - it is easier and more pleasant to work with a flat fabric ...
In addition, ironing with steam will complete the decanting process.

Photo 4: Next, carefully look and read the instructions to understand how to sew bedding with your own hands at home on a sewing machine. We move from simple to complex - first we cut the sheet. If you used the size of the mattress as a measure, then add 20-22 cm to its width and length for the hem of the sheet under the mattress and the seams. For a double bed, it is better, of course, to use a fabric 220 cm wide and cut it across, but if one is not available, then we cut along, (along the length), sewing the missing section to one of the sides plus 3-4 cm for hem and seam. Another note - when laying out the fabric, we make sure that the direction of the pattern on the sheet, duvet cover and pillowcases matches ...
Now it’s the turn of cutting pillowcases: when cutting to the measurement of the pillowcase, add 3 cm for a free fit + 3 cm for seams in width, to a length of 3 cm for a hem + 10 - 15 cm for a valve.
We proceed to cutting the duvet cover - with a fabric width of 220 cm, we cut across, with a shorter length - along, sewing the missing piece. For a loose fit, add 5 cm in width, plus 3 cm for seams (1.5 cm on each side) in length and width. They marked out, drew a border line, folded STRICTLY along the line, without distortions, measured the length along the length of the segment.
Tip: for the convenience of cutting, we fold the fabric in half along the length and cut it off in several places with tailor's pins or iron it in this way when ironing - it will be more convenient to measure the cuts and cut faster.

Photo 5: Measured, double-checked all measurements, following the tailor's saying: "Measure seven times, cut once"? Okay, let's cut it.

Photo 6: Gently stack in a pile so that nothing is wrinkled or dirty ...

Photo 7: Let's start sewing. First you need to hem all the edges of each item. bed set. We use a hem stitch. To do this, first the edge is folded by 5 mm, smoothed, then folded again by 1 cm. For the convenience of sewing, we cut it off with tailor's pins, directing them not along the seam, but across - so you can safely scribble on a typewriter without fear that the needle will fall on a pin and break - it will simply “jump off” it.

Photo 8: We lay the seam, stepping back from the fold of the bent edge by 1-2 mm.

Photo 9: Don't forget to take out the pins - I don't think it will be comfortable to sleep on them...

Photo 10: Let's start with the pillowcase. To begin with, we fold the future pillowcase in half with the face inward, not forgetting to bend the segment for the valve (10-15 cm) before that.

Photo 10a: We will sew the pillowcases with an inverted seam: we fold the details wrong side inside. We chip off.

Photo 10b: We lay the seam at a distance of 5 mm from the edge.

Photo 10c: We trim the seams, turn the pillowcase inside out, cut off so that the first seam is inside the second future seam.

Photo 10d: We sew at a distance of 5-8 mm from the edge.

Photo 10d: The pillowcase is ready! We carefully fold it - let it wait for the tailoring of its "colleagues"!

Photo 11: Duvet cover queue. In order not to process the seams, we use a sewing seam. To do this, we fold the fabric with the front side inward so that one section protrudes 5-6 mm above the other.

Photo 12: We bend the protruding edge.

Photo 13: We cut off the fold with tailor's pins (do not forget about their direction).

Photo 14: We lay the seam, stepping back from the fold of the bent edge by 1-2 mm. We remove the pins.

Photo 15: Then we fold the protruding edge and cut it off, as shown in the photo.

Photo 16: Sew, retreating from the fold 1 mm.

Photo 17: Width finished seam is 0.6-0.8 mm.

Photo 18: Do not forget to leave a hole on one side for threading a blanket with a width of about 50 cm. By the way, it is better to make it from the side where the grain thread passes - this way you will save time on hemming the fabric ...

Photo 19: Our bedding set is ready!

In this master class, I described the most primitive tailoring of bedding. With a little creativity and patience, you can sew ruffled pillowcases, a duvet cover with a heart-shaped hole, and a ruffled bed sheet. Pigs, rhombuses, crosses, tac-toes - everyone has their own dreams and fantasies, and a set of bed linen, sewn with their own hands, - The best way implement them.

It's no secret that a handmade thing has a special energy. A do-it-yourself bedding set will evoke special dreams, cheer you up and protect you from everything bad that can happen. If you believe in it, it will happen...

We think that many needlewomen thought about how to sew bedding with their own hands. Often, such an idea arises when it is impossible to find bed linen in the store for the size of the pillows, beds or blankets used. And this is not surprising, because the days of standard sizes for sleeping sets have already passed, but the range of sizes of modern linen is not yet so large that you can always find the right one.

Actually sew bedding with my own hands quite real, especially if you use the advice of our master class, which will tell you in sufficient detail about how to properly sew bedding.

The most important thing in this matter is the correct taking of measurements, on which it will depend on how the sewn thing will sit. Please note when choosing a material that the fabric for the most part shrinks, which should be laid down when cutting out parts.

So, how much fabric will you need for a pillowcase.

We use a pillow with sides of 60 cm and medium height. For this pillow, you will need a pillowcase with sides of 70 cm. Please note that given size already takes into account seam allowances and possible subsequent shrinkage of the fabric.

For a pillowcase, use the following dimensions: you need to take two times the width of the pillow and add another 25 centimeters for the inner valve. Then you should separately bend the valve, and then fold the rest of the fabric in half again.

When calculating fabric for a duvet cover, take two quilt widths and add some size for shrinkage and seam allowances. As a rule, it is enough to add ten centimeters for shrinkage, another ten centimeters for allowances in total, and the same amount for freedom of fitting. For example, if the blanket has a width of 1.3 m, then you need fabric - 1.3 * 2 + 10 + 10 + 10 = 2.9 m.

The turn has come to the sheet, consider the example of a mattress 90 cm wide and ten centimeters high. We will need a piece of fabric the size of the width of the mattress plus two times twenty-five centimeters.

We offer you a diagram of the arrangement of all the details of the kit in order to most rationally arrange the patterns of bed linen.

Most ideal option it will be if the fabric is ten centimeters larger, so that allowances can still be added. Also note that it is recommended to retreat at least two centimeters between the edges so that there is room for a hem from each edge.

First of all, it is worth cutting off 1 m for a pillowcase (50 cm + 50 cm) and cut off not desired part(shaded). If desired, this part can be put on a small additional pillowcase. On the image dotted lines- fold lines, solid - cut lines.

You may find the basic standards that are used in production useful.

Child: duvet cover - 147*112, sheets - 100*150, pillowcases - 40*60.

One and a half: duvet cover - 215*143, sheets - 214*145, pillowcases - 70*70.

Double: duvet cover - 215*175, sheets - 220*195, pillowcases - 70*70.

Double euro sheet: duvet cover - 215*175, sheets - 220*240, pillowcases - 70*70.

Double European standard: duvet cover - 220*200, sheets - 220*240, pillowcases - 70*70.

Double Euromaxi: duvet cover - 220*240, sheets - 220*240, pillowcases - 70*70.

Family kit: duvet cover - 215 * 143, sheets - 220 * 240, pillowcases - 70 * 70.

You should also know that for sewing linen, a stitching stitch is usually used. To do this, the cut part is first sewn with the front side out, making a line at a distance of half a centimeter from the edge. Then the parts are turned inside out, hiding the resulting seam with an allowance and laying a line at a distance of one and a half centimeters from the edge.

If we are talking about a duvet cover, then it should be necessary to fold the fabric in half and stitch along the perimeter using a sewing seam.

However, on one of the sides of the duvet cover, a hole for a blanket 60 cm long should be left. The edges of this hole themselves are also processed by turning it inward and sewing it on a typewriter.

The sheet is processed along the entire perimeter, folded and overlaid along the edge of the line.

Due to the significant increase in prices for quality bed linen, many housewives are thinking about self-tailoring pillowcases, duvet covers and sheets. Fortunately, sewing underwear is not as difficult as sewing trousers, skirts, and other clothes. If you do not want to overpay for store linen, the cost of which not only reflects the quality, but is also the result of numerous additional costs(production, rental, sale, obtaining certificates, etc.), just sew it yourself!

In the store you can see a fairly cheap fabric intended for sewing bed linen. Of course, such a material is a fabric of low density, which will quickly become unusable, or a fabric with a high content of synthetic fibers (polycotton). Sleeping on synthetic bedding is uncomfortable, so it is better to choose a fabric that is more expensive. It is best to purchase chintz or calico with a high content of cotton fiber. Such material will cost from 150 rubles per meter.

However, synthetic fibers added to natural material, give it strength, durability, pleasant appearance. Such fabric easily withstands regular washing at high (up to 90 degrees) temperatures and does not shrink from exposure to hot water. On the other hand, cotton fibers, which are much less durable, make night rest more comfortable.

An important factor is the density of matter. If you want to save as much as possible, then you can buy low quality material that will resemble gauze. Sewing strong and high-quality bed linen from such a fabric will be problematic. Good material(for example, calico) must have high density(from 128 grams per meter).

How to cut bed linen?

After acquiring suitable material, we need to make open your bed linen and then start sewing.

The first step is to take accurate measurements from the used pillows, blankets, mattress. You can also measure some old sleeping set. To the obtained dimensions, it is worth adding about 5 centimeters each, which will go to shrinkage, allowances, and the like.

It is recommended to add another 15-20 centimeters to the width of the sheet. It’s not worth cutting it completely back to back, it’s better to fill in the excess later. Recommended the minimum width of the sheet is 2 meters(even if the place where you sleep is much narrower and its width does not exceed 160 centimeters).

In the same way, you should do with a duvet cover: add at least 5 centimeters to its width. Subsequently, it is much easier to remove the excess than to hem the missing piece. In addition, keep in mind that linen made from natural calico will sit down after the first wash. The recommended minimum width of each duvet cover from the family set is 150 centimeters.

The turn of the pillowcase should be from 20 to 25 centimeters. Such a fold is a guarantee that the pillow will not constantly fall out of the pillowcase.

Pillowcases can be cut both along the drawing and across. In the first case, the pillowcases will be in perfect harmony with the whole set, in the second case they will create an interesting disharmony effect that will decorate the linen.

How to find out the fabric consumption?

  • 5.5 - one and a half,
  • 7.5 - double,
  • 10.5 - family.

Why is the optimal width of the material for sewing linen 220 centimeters?

You can do even more reasonably: add a second duvet cover and a sheet to the calculation, and make the pillowcases smaller in size - 50 by 70. This will turn out two full-fledged sets at once, each of which consists of a duvet cover, pair of pillowcases and sheets.

As you can see, there are many options, you just have to choose the scheme to your taste. I would like to note once again that it is very important to make the correct preliminary calculation. Before starting work, calculate and check everything again.

Let's start sewing bed linen

If we we sew bed linen with our own hands First of all, we need to choose the right threads. It is best to take strong, strong, but not too thick. They must withstand frequent washing, ironing.

How to sew a duvet cover? The duvet cover, like the rest of the bed, can be sewn with a reliable linen seam, which was invented specifically for this. You can also overlock the seams. It is important to do this with high quality and accuracy in order to avoid shedding of seams during washing and spinning in automatic mode.

How to sew a sheet? It is best to do this with an overlock, since the linen seam, due to its specificity, consists of 6 fabric layers, as a result of which it turns out to be rather rough. These seams are very visible. on calico pillowcases.

In addition, processing with a linen seam is a very complex process that requires certain skills and dexterity from the hostess. When sewing linen with this seam, it is very important to fill your hand.

Bed linen is sewn along the edge by 0.1 with one seam, without sweeping. You can also first stitch the pieces of fabric that need to be sewn, then fold and sew with a stitch. The line should not be small, as frequent puncture of the needle greatly perforates the fabric, leaves large holes and destroys the fibers. It is recommended to choose a medium size.

Now you know how to sew bedding with your own hands. Even if it seemed to you that this is a difficult and time-consuming process - just try it. With the help of this master class you will succeed even if you don't know how to sew!

Olga

Very valuable information about allowances for length and width! Recently bought beautiful sheep blankets, and they are longer than standard kits - you will have to sew new ones yourself. There was an idea to wash the fabric in a typewriter before cutting it for shrinkage, but I'm afraid of deformation - I'd better make allowances. It remains to find high-quality calico 220 cm wide, while the 70-centimeter one was mostly met - I don’t want to take this one. I will sew with a linen seam, and for pillowcases and a duvet cover I will make buttons in cuts.

In stores, many housewives tend to make such products with their own hands. This is due to the fact that it is not always possible to find a model for sale. right size or colors, in addition, self-sewn linen usually costs much less than purchased. Sewing kit does not represent special work, and any novice seamstress can cope with this work. The main thing is to choose a fabric good quality and correctly quantify required material.

What to look for when calculating

Quality bed linen should be seamless, so it is very important to measure all the details of the set correctly so that you do not have to sew on additional strips and pieces. For the manufacture of bedding, natural materials are usually used:

All of them, apart from many positive qualities, have one drawback - after washing. If cotton underwear is washed at a water temperature close to the boiling point, then with each wash the product will shrink slightly in size. This must be remembered when buying fabric in a store, and add about 5% of the length for shrinkage to the calculated amount.

Tailoring of bed linen

Many housewives natural compounds prefer materials consisting of a mixture of cotton and. Such fabrics almost do not shrink after washing. However, if the composition of the matter contains more than 30% synthetic fibers, then it passes air worse and poorly absorbs moisture.

Before you calculate the fabric required for sewing a product, you need to correctly take measurements, carefully measuring the length and width of the bedding.

  • In order not to be mistaken, you can measure the old set and add 6 cm for the seams.
  • When calculating the fabric required for the manufacture of a duvet cover, it is necessary to add at least 8 cm to the dimensions of the blanket for free movement.
  • To calculate the amount of material for making a sheet, you should measure not only the width, but also the height of the mattress, add these values \u200b\u200band add another 20 cm on both sides. The sheet should not jump out from under the mattress, otherwise it will be uncomfortable to sleep on such linen.
  • For sewing pillowcases, pillow parameters are measured. Pillowcases can be sewn in two ways: with a fold and with a zipper. In the first case, at least 30 cm is left for the bend. If, in order to save money, the bend is made smaller, then the pillow will look ugly and spoil the appearance of the entire set. For a zipper, it is enough to leave a margin of 5 cm.

After all bedding is measured, add up the resulting values. Their sum indicates how many meters of linen must be purchased for the manufacture of linen.

Fabric calculation for a double set

For sewing bed linen, a canvas with a width of 220-230 cm is best suited. Usually the length of the bed does not exceed 200 cm, which means that the length of the sheet and duvet cover is also about 200 cm. It remains to determine the width of these parts.

The width of the double bed is 180 cm, and the height of the mattress can reach from 15 to 45 cm. To calculate the fabric that will be used to make the bed sheet, you must use the following formula:

bed width + two mattress heights + folds that are tucked under the mattress, that is

180 cm + 2 x 15 cm + 2 x 20 cm = 250 cm

two blanket widths + 5 cm per seam = 2 x 180 cm +5 cm =365 cm

The amount of fabric per pillowcase depends on the size and quantity. Standard pillows come in two types - square 70 cm x 70 cm and rectangular 70 cm x 50 cm.

  1. In the first case, one pillowcase should measure 75 cm in length (5 cm for the seams). Since the canvas has a width of 220 cm, after the pattern of the pillowcase, a small piece will remain.
    220 cm - 2 x 75 cm - 30 cm (per hem) = 40 cm.

Thus, to make two square pillowcases, you will need to cut 150 cm from the length of the canvas. After cutting, there will be an extra piece measuring 150 cm x 40 cm, from which you can sew two small pillows or use it in some kind of needlework.

  1. When sewing rectangular pillowcases, the bend is made on the smaller side, and the calculation is made as follows:
    (50 cm + 5 cm for seams) x 2 = 110 cm.
    After cutting, there will be an extra piece of 110 cm x 40 cm.

As a result, it turns out that for a double set you need to purchase fabrics:

  • 365 cm + 250 cm + 150 cm = 765 cm (with square pillowcases 70x70);
  • 365 cm + 250 cm + 110 cm = 725 cm (with rectangular pillowcases 70x50).

If the canvas width is 150 cm or 80 cm

Bed linen is the face of the bedroom

For sewing bed linen, it is not necessary to use only fabrics 220 cm wide. If you like the colors and quality of the material, you can buy a fabric of a smaller width, for example, 150 cm and even 80 cm. In these cases, you will have to grind the details, and for this you need to have skills in work .

For a one and a half 120 cm bed, it is quite possible to sew bed linen sets from a fabric having a width of 150 cm. The calculation of the required material is done as follows:

  • sheet - 210 cm;
  • duvet cover - two lengths of a blanket 200 cm x 2 + 5 cm (per seam) = 405 cm;
  • two pillowcases (70 x 70) - 180 cm.

The total is 210 cm + 405 cm + 180 cm = 795 cm.
With a fabric width of 80 cm, you can also sew a one and a half set, only the sheet and the duvet cover will have a seam in the middle. Here is the calculation of the material required for the manufacture of such linen:

  • sheet - 210 cm x 2 = 460 cm;
  • duvet cover - 200 cm x 4 = 800 cm;
  • two pillowcases - 70 cm x 4 + 30 cm x 2 = 340 cm.

A total of 16 meters of matter, the width of which is 80 cm, will be used up when sewing a one and a half set.

Before going to the store, you need to measure your bedding and calculate in advance the fabric needed to sew the set, then you definitely won’t have to overpay for extra centimeters.
