Quartz stone - properties, meaning and influence on different signs of the Zodiac. Quartz - a magical stone of luck and prosperity

.
The two main polymorphic crystalline modifications of silicon dioxide are: hexagonal β-quartz, stable at 1 atm pressure. (or 100 kN/m2) in the temperature range 870-573°C, and trigonal α-quartz, stable at temperatures below 573°C. It is α-quartz that is widespread in nature; this modification, stable at low temperatures, is usually called simply quartz. All hexagonal quartz crystals found under ordinary conditions are paramorphoses of α-quartz over β-quartz. α-quartz crystallizes in the trigonal trapezohedron class of the trigonal system. The crystal structure is of a frame type, built from silicon-oxygen tetrahedra arranged in a helical manner (with a right or left turn of the screw) relative to the main axis of the crystal. Depending on this, right and left structural and morphological forms of quartz crystals are distinguished, distinguishable externally by the symmetry of the arrangement of some faces (for example, trapezohedron, etc.). The absence of planes and a center of symmetry in α-quartz crystals determines the presence of piezoelectric and pyroelectric properties.

Quartz phase diagram

Quartz is formed during various geological processes:
Directly crystallizes from acidic magma. Quartz contains both intrusive (granite, diorite) and effusive (rhyolite, dacite) rocks of acidic and intermediate composition, and can be found in igneous rocks of basic composition (quartz gabbro).
In acidic volcanic rocks it often forms porphyry phenocrysts.

Quartz crystallizes from fluid-enriched pegmatite magmas and is one of the main minerals of granitic pegmatites. In pegmatites, quartz forms intergrowths with potassium feldspar (pegmatite proper); the internal parts of pegmatite veins are often composed of pure quartz (quartz core). Quartz is the main mineral of apogranitic metasomatites - greisen.

Under surface conditions, quartz is stable and accumulates in placers of various origins (coastal-marine, aeolian, alluvial, etc.).

Depending on the various conditions formation, quartz crystallizes in various polymorphic modifications. The figure shows a P-T state diagram for it.

Application

Valuable mineral raw materials: used in optical instruments, ultrasound generators, telephone and radio equipment (as a piezoelectric). It is consumed in large quantities by the glass and ceramics industries (rock crystal and pure quartz sand). It is also used in the production of silica refractories and quartz glass. Many varieties are used in jewelry as ornamental stones.

Quartz and esoterics

Quartz is the most common mineral on our planet. More than half of the earth's crust consists of various quartzites. We can safely say that quartz was the very first mineral discovered by man. And it's not about external attractiveness, and in physical properties the gem itself. Quartz nuggets are very hard and dense; all kinds of tools were made from them. This happened long before the birth of the first civilizations.

When all basic needs were satisfied and a person wanted to decorate this world, quartz again became an object of attention. The first rose quartz products were dated to the 7th-6th millennium BC. These were small pyemic crystals, braided with leather; in those distant times, only the most respected members of the tribe were given the privilege of wearing this gem.

Smoky and black quartz were designated by the same name - morion. Was highly revered in southern Europe in the 10th century AD. It was primarily a ritual stone. Dark colors were a symbol of humility and complete commitment to one's faith.

Magical properties of quartz

The unusual influence of gems on people is reflected in most myths and legends. Even the Bible mentions crafts and gems. At different times they served as a measure of value and exchange, a symbol of power and a source of strength. And of course, the properties of quartz were discovered and actively used for various purposes. Let's try to figure out exactly what magical properties quartz is endowed with.

Volcanic quartz magical properties of the stone

Quartz also differs in its origin. As a rule, quartz is formed in the earth's crust at a temperature of about 700 degrees, but during eruptions, quartzites can also form in volcanic lava at more high temperatures at 1000 degrees. Such stones have a more porous structure.

Volcanic quartz or obsidian has been known to the world since ancient times. Previously, it was widely used for predictions and fortune telling. This magical attribute of incredible beauty was present in the arsenal of every magician. A crystal-based amulet developed the abilities of clairvoyants and protected magicians from energy attacks.

Volcanic quartz – strong stone, helping its owner to perk up, sharpen thought processes and clarify consciousness. It is considered an additional source of energy.

“This stone cools the palms, but warms the soul,” - this is exactly what they said about quartz in ancient times. Perhaps there are no more precise words to characterize this extraordinary mineral. What makes it so unusual?

How not to get confused in quartz

In fact, quartz is the name not of one stone, but of a whole group of minerals that differ in color, hardness, shape, deposits and some other properties.

Now quartz is one of the most common stones in the world and has more than ten varieties. This diversity is explained by the process of formation of the mineral and the characteristics of its composition.

The “purest” quartz that does not contain impurities is rock crystal. The name speaks for itself: the mineral mined in the caves of hydrothermal veins is absolutely transparent.

Milky quartz also contains no additional substances, but due to internal gas bubbles and tiny cracks, the stone has a milky white matte color.

One of the brightest and most sought after is honey-golden citrine, which gets its sunny color thanks to iron impurities.

When we say “quartz,” we most often mean a transparent green variety of the mineral called prasiolite, or praseme. Its shade depends on the inclusion of needle-shaped actinolite crystals in the stone. Jewelers often give quartz various fancy cuts, so it looks incredibly beautiful in jewelry. Taking advantage of the stone's transparency, designers incorporate praseme into pieces complemented by gold designs. You want to look at such decorations without stopping.

It turns out that quartz rocks also include some ornamental stones, such as carnelian, agate and jasper. Agate has many tones: from classic white, black and red to whitened shades of blue and pink.

Shimmering, looking like a starry sky, aventurine is one of the most mysterious quartzes. People did not immediately learn that the shine of the mineral is given by the smallest flakes of mica and hematite.

Also, to decorate products, designers often choose blue or delicate rose quartz, which looks like a frozen piece of ice.

And these are just a few varieties of a fairly large group of minerals. Quartz rocks also include rauchtopaz, morion, perunite, hematite and some other stones that are in demand in the jewelry industry.

Unique finds

Quartz has been known for several millennia, so archaeologists are discovering quite interesting things at the sites of ancient civilizations. Thus, in the vicinity of Mycenae, a rock crystal vase in the shape of a bird, dated to the 16th century, was found. BC. Due to the hardness of the stone, the find was preserved almost unharmed.

Precious stones were found in the legendary tomb of the Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun. Sunglasses. The round lenses of the accessory were made of two thinnest morion crystals connected by bronze plates.

But the Roman emperor Nero had several goblets made of solid rock crystals. The choice of material was not accidental. Quartz, which has high thermal conductivity, kept drinks cool even in the heat.

Why do watches have quartz?

Quartz is used in many industries, including the watch industry. Quartz watches are considered to be the highest quality. It's all about the unique properties of the mineral. The battery acts on the quartz with current, which causes stable vibrations in the stone. The size of the quartz is selected so that the oscillation frequency is 32768 Hz, thanks to which the quartz movement is considered the most reliable and durable.

In Asia, dark blue quartz was called “Tamerlane’s stone,” off the coast of North America the mineral was known as Mexican diamond, and the Romans considered it a gift from Venus.

It is known that in nature there are significant reserves of quartz of various shades. Despite this, Russian scientists decided to play it safe and patented a technology for artificially coloring the mineral.

The largest quartz found in our country is kept in the museum of the St. Petersburg Mining Institute. A native mineral more than 1 meter in height appeared in the museum’s collection relatively recently. Thousands of townspeople saw this unique exhibit every day, without knowing it. The thing is that initially the crystal served as a street cabinet.

Fashion for quartz

Nowadays, almost a third of the entire range of jewelry is jewelry with quartz. Vibrant colors, durability and a wide selection of shades provide designers with creative freedom.

Quartz is used in the most elegant evening jewelry, voluminous earrings and rings, as well as pendants and bracelets. The mineral is often given a fancy cut, which enhances the shine of the stone and makes it even more attractive. Gold jewelry with iridescent yellow-green quartz looks especially unusual. Wanting to emphasize the greenish tint of prasiolite, designers combine the stone with amethysts, rauchtopazes, cubic zirconias and diamonds.

The most stylish stars prefer jewelry with quartz. Thus, the owner of impeccable taste, Angelina Jolie, included earrings with quartz in her own collection of Style of Jolie jewelry, and the inimitable Sarah Jessica Parker admitted in an interview with one of the fashion magazines that an exclusive set of gold earrings and a bracelet with smoky quartz is one of her favorites.

Quartz is one of the most common minerals in the earth's crust.

Its total mass fraction exceeds 50%. The main element is silicon.

In nature, it occurs in the form of crystals, sand, or even solid rock.

Characteristics and types

About 100 varieties of quartz are known. Among them are rock crystal, ruby, and agate. Quartz mining is carried out on an industrial scale. Pure quartz has a transparent color. In composition it is close to glass, but harder than it. There are also quite strong differences in the refractive index. Quartz with impurities can have any color, with the exception of blue and green.

Quartz crystals can have very different sizes. The typical size of one crystal is 5 - 10, 20 cm. Rock crystal can also be found in large clusters. The smallest crystals are quartz sand. Colorless quartz sand is similar in composition to pure crystalline quartz.

Field and production

(Quartz quarry "Crystal Mountain")

Due to its prevalence, quartz is mined using the conventional open-pit method. The main deposits of quartz are located in mountainous areas, but this is not necessary. Colored quartz (Citrine, Agate, Chalcedony, Sapphire quartz + about 20 items) are widely mined in the Urals. Crystalline quartz is mined by underground or open-pit mining. Sand - only open.

Rock massifs made of pure quartz are most convenient for mining. In this case, it can be mined by explosive means in large blocks. The method of extraction largely depends on further use. Thus, crystalline quartz is not required for the glass industry. Quartz crystalline rock is sometimes used to produce electronics (silicon for semiconductors). Solid crystals are needed to produce lighters, piezoelectric speakers and other devices.

Applications of quartz

Quart is used in the glass and electronics industries. Some special grades of glass, such as UV clear quartz glass, are made from 98% natural quartz. Quartz sand - excellent construction material. It is used to create high-strength concrete, along with granite crushed stone.

Products made from natural quartz stone of various varieties are always highly complex to manufacture. It is due to the high hardness of quartz, which makes its processing very difficult. For this reason in Lately artificial quartz stone is becoming widespread. It is used in the same places as granite. Artificial quartz stone consists of 90% natural quartz chips.

Mineral quartz is one of the most common in the depths of the Earth's crust. Its chemical formula is SiO2, dioxide. The name of this mineral comes from the German word “Querklufter”, which means cross-vein ore.

Chemical characteristics quartz crystals

Silica is the most common form of quartz and has the property of developed polymorphism. There are two main crystalline polymorphs of silica: 1) hexagonal α-quartz, well stable at a pressure of 1 atmosphere in the temperature range from 573 to 870 ° C; 2) trigonal β-quartz, stable at lower temperatures, the values of which are below 573°C.

In nature β-quartz more common than α-quartz. Lack of center of symmetry and planes β-quartz crystals indicates the presence of pyroelectric and piezoelectric properties.

There are other modifications of polymorphic silica:

Seyfertit

Moganite

Tridymite

Coesite

Cristobalite

Stishovite (formed in the presence of very high pressure, as well as moderate temperature, was first found at the site of a nuclear explosion, at its epicenter)

Quartz crystals, are very similar in structure to berlinite crystals. They are usually formed in the form of a hexagonal prism. On one edge, sometimes on both, topped with a triangular or hexagonal head, shaped like a pyramid.

Very often, quartz crystals gradually narrow towards the head, and characteristic transverse shading is visible on the flat faces of the crystalline prism.

Quite rarely, quartz crystals have the shape of a pseudohexagonal dipyramid. Externally, quartz crystals are usually regular, but sometimes form complex double sections.

They arise both during the growth of crystals and during the process of internal structural formation during mechanical deformations, as well as thermal polymorphic α-β transitions, which are accompanied by strong compression.

IN rocks Quartz of metamorphic and igneous origin forms irregular grains of isometric shape. They are often fused with other minerals.

Properties of quartz

Quartz has a glassy appearance, sometimes with a greasy tint. The fracture of its crystals is conchoidal or uneven. Quartz cleavage imperfect, but equal to 7 by . The density of this mineral is 2.6 - 2.65 g/cm3.

Quartz dissolves well in. The melting point of the mineral is 171 - 1728°C. Due to the strong viscosity of the solution, it is very difficult to determine the exact melting point. Quartz belongs to the group of oxides that form, in other words, it is prone to the formation of crystals of a supercooled melt -.

Varieties of Quartz

There is a large number varieties of quartz. These include mountain quartz, which are crystals of transparent, colorless quartz. or it is also called, it is light gray or light brownish. Another type of quartz is called, has a color.

Is a precious variety of rock crystal that has a violet, lilac-colored. Crystals have lemon color. shimmering is inherent due to the large number of small scales or.

Prazem contains actinolite inclusions, which give it a tint. - this is another type of rock crystal, it contains inclusions of fine-needle crystals, goethite, or other types of minerals that form fine-needle-shaped crystals.

Chalcedony is a translucent mineral of a cryptocrystalline fine-fiber variety. It comes in white, gray and honey yellow colors. Forms spherulite crystals, pseudostalactites or solid large sizes massive formations, as well as spherulite crusts. Agate is one of the varieties of chalcedony with a layered-banded crystal structure.

Forms cryptocrystalline fine-grained silica aggregates of variable composition, which are formed mainly from quartz and to a lesser extent from cristobalite, chalcedony, in rare cases with the presence of a small amount of crystals.

They are most often found in the form of pebbles or nodules, which arise when they are destroyed mechanically. , , - all of them are pseudomorphoses, that is, products of the replacement of various types of asbestos with quartz.

Quartz formation

Quartz crystals are formed during various geological changes. Quartz crystallizes directly from magma of acidic composition, as well as from fluid-rich pegmatite magmas. In rocks of volcanic origin with the presence of an acidic composition, porphyry inclusions often form.

Quartz is one of the main minerals of the family of granitic pegmatites, in which quartz forms intergrowths with potassium field. Quartz crystals are also the main minerals of metasomatite apogranites - greisens. In outdoor conditions, quartz is well stable; it accumulates and forms in placers of various origins.

Applications of quartz

This mineral is a valuable mineral raw material. It is used in the production of optical instruments, radio and telephone equipment, and ultrasound generators.

It is used in huge quantities by the ceramic and glass industries (pure quartz sand and rock crystal). This mineral is also used for the production of quartz glass and the manufacture of siliceous refractories. In jewelry it is used as inserts in jewelry or as.

The most important property of quartz crystals is the piezoelectric effect. It was discovered in 1880 by scientists from France, brothers Paul and Pierre Curie, on quartz crystals. The application of the piezoelectric effect was first proposed by Paul Langevin, he was also French.

This discovery occurred during the First World War. The essence of Paul Langevin's proposal was to use ultrasound to detect enemy submarines, but to obtain this ultrasound it was supposed to use the piezoelectric effect.

Flat, parallel, smooth, polished quartz plate with a holder and electrodes, it was a piezoelectric resonator, in other words, it was an oscillatory circuit with a certain frequency of resonant oscillations. The resonant frequency directly depends on the direction of the cut and the thickness of the plate itself.

Pictured is rose quartz

Quartz resonators are used as filters with high selectivity, as well as for standardization and frequency stabilization in generators. One of the main and most important requirements for quartz resonators is the temperature regime of the resonant frequency.

Piezoquartz, until recently, was used exclusively for military needs. IN modern times Various piezoelements are used as good sources, as well as in various industrial, medical, research and even sometimes household devices, for example piezo lighters, devices for ultrasonic rodent control. The operation of this device for several days makes them feel uncomfortable and want to quickly leave the room.
