English rib knitting: knitting pattern, technique and application of the pattern. English elastic with knitting needles - it's very simple

July 15th, 2016 Anna Vecherya

Good afternoon, Dear friends! I am incredibly glad to welcome you to the new master class on the site! I hope that it will be useful and interesting for you, because what we will talk about today is loved not only by the needlewomen of Foggy Albion, but also by ours, domestic ones, that is, by all of us.

So, we will talk about English gum. And, to be honest, when preparing this master class, I fell into a stupor. After all, the point is that English gum is a very specific pattern, and speaking about it in detail, you need to tell which methods of typing are suitable for this pattern, tell (and show!) how to make a neat edge for open parts, and which one for stitching, how to close the English elastic so that it was elastic, or vice versa, inelastic, like knitting with an English elastic band in a circle. But you can still knit it in several ways! In general, if I started showing you all this in one master class, I definitely wouldn’t fit it into 100 photos. And I decided to do several master classes, where I will talk not only about all of the above, but also show how to add and subtract loops for an English elastic band, that is, to give the fabric knitted with this pattern a shape, how to knit an English elastic band in two colors (and even how to beautifully cast on and close the loops when knitting with this pattern in two colors), for the most cross-handed (like me), I will show how to lift the loops when knitting with an English elastic band, and, most interestingly, we will talk about interesting technology, or even a subtype of patterns called “brioche”, and are formed precisely from English elastic, I will teach you how to knit such patterns, and we will even try to knit some product with such a pattern. This is how interesting it will be on the Magic Threads website soon, so I advise you to definitely subscribe to new master classes at the end of the article.

Well, today we will talk exclusively about the basics of knitting an English rib, or a classic (full) patent pattern. And first, let's move on to practice.

We cast on the number of loops that are a multiple of 3. I cast on loops.

In this master class I will knit English rib without edge loops, I will immediately start with the pattern. This method, by the way, is great for open edges, for example, for a scarf. We make it straight (the thread is in the direction “away from us”).

Remove the first loop unknitted, thread by knitting. (In some descriptions of patterns you may come across “slip a double crochet”; that’s exactly what we did now.)

facial.

Now we need to knit a loop together with the yarn over from the previous row. This is quite easy - after all, they “lie” very close. We thread the knitting needle into the loop along with the yarn over.

We knit a loop together with the yarn over. And these three steps (yarn over, remove the loop unknitted, knit the loop with the crochet from the previous row together) you will need to repeat until the end of the row, and in each subsequent row (English elastic - double sided pattern). Isn't it easy?

Symbols for the diagram:

Well, for those who like to knit with purl stitches (I’m sure there are some), here is the second way to knit an English rib.

And we knit two loops together.

And finally, a little theory.

The loop that we have just knitted is called English loop, in foreign literature it is called patent loop, and patterns containing such loops – patent(English gum - classic or full patent pattern).

Patent loop is knitted in two rows: in the first row we remove the loop with the crochet, and in the second we knit the yarn over together with the loop. The fact that the English stitch is knitted in two rows is very important and will come in handy when creating brioche patterns.

Patent patterns are not only English gum and brioche, but also a whole large group patterns that I have already shown on the Magic Threads website, and will definitely show again, both in the Master Classes section and in the Patterns section (where I show patterns and give diagrams and descriptions for them). Here are links to these articles:

Due to the fact that its properties are similar to English, although it does not contain patent loops, but is formed only by knitting and purling, is called false patent.

And once again I advise you to subscribe to new master classes, because very soon I will be doing a master class on one of the most popular patent patterns - mesh patent(it is found under the names Honeycomb pattern, Honeycomb, Small honeycomb, etc.).

The fabric, knitted with patent patterns, is elastic and voluminous, thanks to which it retains heat well.

But you need to take into account what the fabric is; if knitted too loosely (not tightly), it can turn out loose, so if you knit loosely, use smaller knitting needles.

Also, the elasticity of the fabric must be taken into account when knitting samples; the sample must be measured in a slightly stretched state so that the product is not too large.

Due to the volume of patent patterns, they require a lot, the fabric is often heavy, this must be taken into account when knitting large products, and when knitting outerwear nessesary to use side seams(refuse), otherwise the canvas will “sag”.

For knitting patent patterns, it is preferable to use wool yarn.

And, of course, you should not steam such patterns - they will lose their shape.

Watch my video - English gum!

That's all, I hope I didn't forget to tell you anything, and that my master class was useful to you, and if you have any questions, you can ask them in the comments. See you!

One reader was “motivated” to write this article, for which special thanks to her. She wrote that it doesn't work English gum. It was not clear to her how to knit it according to the description I gave. I answered in the comment, I hope everything worked out for her.

But I suddenly remembered that at the dawn of my passion for knitting needles, I had not knitted anything with English elastic for a very long time. All because my mother was going to knit a hat with this pattern, and she didn’t succeed the first time. I immediately concluded that knitting English rib is very difficult, because if my mother, who knits very well, couldn’t do it, I won’t even try. Then this story was forgotten, and at the knitting courses there were no problems with knitting English elastic.

Why am I doing all this? It's just that when we acquire certain skills in something, many things seem obvious, and we miss that people who are just starting to learn this may experience serious difficulties.

It seemed that it couldn’t be simpler, in English rib, all rows, provided there is an even set of stitches, are knitted the same way: 1 knit, yarn over, remove the loop without knitting. But not everyone succeeds the first time.

In general, we continue knitting lessons for beginners. I quickly cast on 20 stitches and will try to describe in detail the process of knitting an English rib.

1st row.
  1. Removing the edge
  2. We knit the first stitch behind the front wall (or top section) - this is important, otherwise the pattern will not work.
  3. Next we make a yarn over
  4. remove the second loop without knitting
  5. As a result, we have a knit stitch, yarn over and a loop removed without knitting.

We knit like this until the end of the row. At the end, the row ends with a double crochet loop and an edge stitch.

Turn the knitting.

2nd row.
  • We remove the edge, then we have a double crochet loop; here it is, Together with this same yarn over, we knit the knit one.
  • In the description of knitting English rib, this is called: “we knit a double crochet loop from the previous row.”
  • Next, yarn over again and slip off the next loop without knitting. For convenience, after knitting the knitting stitch, I throw the working thread onto the left knitting needle, bring the right knitting needle under the working thread and remove the loop, which we have without knitting, so in one motion I yarn over and remove the loop.

That's all.

Another small nuance - when you knit two or three rows, your knitting will bear little resemblance to an English rib. Here in my photo you can see that after knitting two rows on the knitting needles, it turned out to be some kind of tangle.

Beginner knitters often feel that the pattern is not working out, they are knitting incorrectly, etc. In fact, you just need to knit a few more rows and everything will fall into place.

This is what four rows of English rib knitting look like. It doesn't look very similar either...

But here the pattern has already “appeared”. This is despite the fact that I knitted with fairly thin threads.

Our unexpected lesson is over. You are no longer afraid of English gum. I think it’s clear how to knit. If you have questions, ask in the comments. I wish that all patterns always turn out right the first time.

Thanks for the master class. I really couldn’t do the English elastic, but thanks to you I’m knitting a scarf and everything works out.

In many knitted things Elastic bands are used to prevent them from looking baggy. They are also simply necessary in those things where there are fitting elements. These can be cuffs, bottoms of products, high necks in women's and. Thus, the made part can be inserted to highlight any part of the body, for example, the waist. Using this manufacturing principle, independent things can be obtained, for example, for adults and children.

Some types of rubber bands are used in decorative finishing, due to its extraordinary originality. But how to knit elastic with knitting needles for a beginner? This is what we will look at next. But to make it beautiful, you need to take into account that the knitting needles are needed with a thread thickness or only one and a half times more than it. You also need to take into account that products knitted in this way should not be steamed or ironed, otherwise they will lose their convex texture and elasticity.

Types of rubber bands

The most commonly used types of knitting needles are:

  • English rubber bands.
  • Simple - 1x1, 2x2, etc.
  • Double.
  • Polish.
  • French.

As a rule, their names depend on the region where they first appeared for use.

Their name speaks for itself; they are very easy to make. A simple pattern is knitted with various repetitions of the main stitches. Typically, knitting with such a pattern is used where it is necessary for the part to fit tightly to the body, as a rule, these are knee socks, cuffs, sleeves, the bottom of products, as well as when. It is necessary to take into account the quality of the threads used, wool gives elasticity and good stretch, while cotton does not provide the required volume, and the product will seem flat.

Numbers are used to designate such products. Where number 1 is knit, and 2 is purl. The only problem when knitting things in this way is maintaining the proportions of the part being made so that it is stretchable. An example of a knitting fragment is shown in the photo:

The following diagrams show how to knit an elastic band correctly for beginners:

  • 1x1 - with this method: the first type follows the purl one, and when changing rows they are located one above the other.
  • 2x2 - knitting practically repeats the first principle, only the loops here come in pairs, respectively, their number in the fabric should be divided by two. And we must not forget about the two edges. This pattern looks the same on both sides of the resulting product.
  • 2x1 – in this case there is also a pair of edges. And the rows are knitted as follows:
  1. first - two of the first type, 1 purl;
  2. second - do the same as the first, but change places;
  3. the third completely repeats the first row.

Which option to choose for knitting with your own hands must be decided based on the final parameters of the product. On small ones, a product with a finer knit will look organic. And on larger ones, appropriate.

English gum is very popular. Also, its pattern is compared to pearls, hence it is also called pearl. Since when knitted in this way, the resulting products will be very soft and have excellent stretch, it is used for scarves and even sportswear. As a result, to knit such a product they use the main ones, and also with the yarn over.

Instructions for making 1x1 elastic:

  • You will need a number of loops that does not divide by half. Then the knitting pattern initially looks like this: take the thread towards you with the end of the right knitting needle, remove it, and the thread itself goes behind the knitting, knitting.
  • Then it repeats, only the last two are captured.
  • After all this, knit two again, yarn over, 1 is removed.

There is a small nuance of closing the pearl look, which, with practice, you can handle on your own:

  • Use this method: without a crochet, climb onto another knitting needle and the double crochet loop of the previous row is connected with one and so on until the end.
  • After this it is used the usual way closing.
  • But if the pearl look is performed in a ring, it closes a little differently:
  • The front one, with a crochet, can be removed.
  • The thread is thrown on, the loop is picked up without changes, purl.
  • Take two things and knit them together, and the next one is simply taken on without knitting.

Wonderful pearl elastic band in 2x2 design. The number of loops required in it can be divided by four and there are two edge loops.

Elastic band 2X2 step by step:

  • The knitting begins like a classic English one, ending with two loops of the first type.
  • The thread is thrown on, after which 2 loops are removed onto the second knitting needle, 2 knit. At the end, the thread is thrown back to itself and two are taken away without changes.
  • The entire series uses knits. It is connected by a yarn over and a loop of the previous row, the next one with a yarn over, remove two. At the end there is 1 with a double crochet and one without.
  • Rapport is used: on the second knitting needle, the working thread is towards you, two removed loops, 1 together with the yarn over are connected with the front one, and another one of the same. The end of the row ends as in the second case.
  • Next we do the opposite.

Double elastic band

Where it is necessary for the element to hold its shape and have a rigid base, this elastic band is used for knitting, since it is a fabric folded in half. It is so simple to make that it is equally easy for a beginner and already knowledgeable people. Let's look at how to knit an elastic band with knitting needles below:

  • The cast-on loops should be divided into four, and of course, don’t forget the edge ones.
  • Next, the front part is behind the front part, then the next one is thrown onto the knitting needle, not knitted, the thread goes in front of the fabric
  • Then do this - purl, then remove, working thread for the product
  • Next, let's start from the first point

In this video you can see in detail how to knit an elastic band with your own hands:

To knit snoods, belts or gloves, hollow elastic is knitted in the round using special knitting needles. At the same time, all the rows look very simple - the front one and then remove the next one.

Polish elastic for knitting is quite popular in the manufacture of children's clothes and scarves; items obtained this way are always soft, light and comfortable. The main advantage of this type of elastic is its versatility. There are two ways to make such an elastic band yourself:

Polish rib knitting pattern

  • The beginning looks the same as in the previous view. Then all the odd rows: two knit, two purl, then even: we change all places, in the middle - as odd.
  • The set is the same as in the first case, then 1 knit stitch, after that a purl stitch, then the first two. When turning the fabric, one purl and three first types are knitted.

You can learn more about this from the master class in the video:

Quite impressive french elastic It will look beautiful when finishing ready-made wardrobe items, and when knitting, for example, children's skirts. If you want to successfully make a French stitch, we cast on loops in a number that can be divided into four and edge loops on both sides. To get what you need you need:

  • Alternately we knit two purl and two opposite ones. back wall
  • We continue a little differently - purl, two front ones and again the first type.
  • Then everything repeats.

There is another method of knitting French elastic:

  • Loops are multiples of three, as well as three for the edge, so that everything is symmetrical.
  • Then all the rows that cannot be divided into two are done like this: purl one, the next one is thrown off without fastening, then it is grabbed through the back wall, and the loop that was thrown off before is taken onto the knitting needle and also grabbed by the back wall of the first type with a loop, we make the outermost one like the first.
  • All rows divided into halves are made in the same way as the previous ones, only instead of purling, they are knitted with knits and vice versa.

Due to the fact that there are a huge number of varieties and types of rubber bands, but what would knitted products looked beautiful and organically there are a number of principles that must be followed to obtain all the desired results.

  • The main requirement is to maintain the pattern and density of knitting on the elastic band and on the main product, so that in the final form everything looks harmonious.
  • They are only suitable for knitting with a certain knitting circular knitting needles, because some have beautiful pattern on both sides.

In general, such diversity gives very big choice when working with various types threads and in the manufacture of the widest selection of products. Even the most inexperienced people will be able to choose what they like and will be very easy to make. And if you follow the available videos and patterns for knitting elastic bands, then everything will definitely turn out great.

On the eve of the warm season, people want to dress in cozy and attractive accessories - or rather, a hat and scarf. A few years ago, sets knitted with English elastic were in fashion, but today more complete products are knitted with it - jumpers, jackets, sweaters and solid vests, snoods. English elastic with knitting needles is actively used not only by beginners, but also by experienced knitters, because it great way to make a product that should stretch well to the sides. Yes, it is not for nothing that the pattern received such a name - its canvas can be increased in width by almost one and a half times. Also related item increases in length very well. This unusualness is explained by the description and technique in knitting - knit stitches with yarn overs are used here. A certain alternation leads to “false” stretching of the fabric.

Features of English gum

The pattern in question is a double-sided finished fabric that looks elegant both from the front and wrong side. Therefore, craftswomen recommend using a description and a pattern for knitting products that will be visually viewed from both sides - scarves and stoles. Also, experienced craftsmen know that fluffy English elastic is convenient for knitting leg warmers - these are such amazing stockings that constantly get dirty during a thaw or rainy weather. In order not to spend a lot of time on washing and not to walk down the street in soiled clothes, the leg warmers are simply turned inside out and put on again with the “wrong” side. English elastic is used for knitting children's clothes, but only partially. For example, a knitted shirtfront or turtleneck neck will save a child from difficulties in dressing independently, will prevent pain when pulling it over the head, which will save parents from screaming.

Attention! Because the double technique knitting involves the use of yarn overs; the product should use approximately 1.5-2 times more yarn than the calculated amount. The pattern entails a lot of expense, so if you don’t follow the recommendations, you can run into trouble.

Advantages and disadvantages of double pattern

The pattern is popular due to its advantages:

Among the disadvantages, the only highlight is the high consumption of yarn, which was already described above, which can be saved with circular tools. Craftswomen also note excessive deformation related product. And if in the case of a scarf this is excusable - the product is often simply stretched out in length - then knitting sweaters with circular or straight tools may turn out to be useless. Such products are not considered suitable for long-term everyday wear - they become deformed. Therefore, it is recommended to wash large items only by hand and dry them on a laid out towel.

Attention! Experienced craftswomen They give advice to beginners - so that the product knitted with a fluffy English elastic band using circular or straight tools is not greatly deformed, it is recommended to immediately knit 3-4 rows after casting on, alternating knit and purl stitches 1x1. You can also cheat along the edges of the fabric - immediately after and before the edge loops, put in another loop, which you constantly knit with knit stitches. This will disrupt the pattern a little, it will be slightly noticeable, but it will preserve pristine appearance related product on for a long time. It is correct to use the round method.

How to knit an English rib

There are two options for knitting English rib with knitting needles. There is a simpler way - a description of the classic one, which ensures the previously specified elasticity. But the second method seems to involve less deformation, so you should choose a knitting method based on your own preferences and the chosen model to embody beauty.

First way

To knit a voluminous fabric using the first method, cast on an even number of loops on circular or straight knitting needles and add two edge stitches to the stitch. Next we knit in the sequence according to the description:

  • 1st row - the first edge loop is removed without knitting, and then a row is knitted with a false elastic band 1x1, the second is knitted purl loop.
  • 2nd row - the edge stitch is again removed without knitting, the front stitch is knitted identically, and the subsequent purl loop is thrown onto the knitting needle without knitting, and made one yarn over - the thread remains at work. In this way, the product is knitted to the end of the row, and completed with an edge loop in the form of a purl loop.
  • 3rd row - remove the edge stitch, also throw the next knit stitch onto a knitting needle without knitting with a crochet, and knit the stitch previously thrown off with a crochet from the previous row together with a double crochet. Alternating, you should reach the end of the row and purl the last edge. Next, everything is knitted in the round, which you can see in the video.

Next, repeat knitting from the second row of the presented description. This way it knits less elastic band, although outwardly it is completely similar to the standard circuit shown in the photo.

Second way

This method is classic - it is somewhat simpler in knitting a voluminous double fabric, so it is better for beginners to start by studying it. For the second method, we cast on and knit an even number of loops and 2 additional edge loops. The English elastic is knitted using the second method in accordance with the following description:

  • Row 1 – remove the edge without knitting, then knit a row with a 1x1 pattern, ending with the last loop that needs to be knitted wrong side out.
  • 2nd row - remove the edge loop without knitting, throw over the front loop with a crochet, knit all the purl loops further according to the pattern. The last edge is knitted with a purl stitch.
  • 3rd row - then knit the second row to get a pattern corresponding to the circle.

The presented knitting methods for craftswomen will not lead to any difficulties. Beginners will have to figure out the sequence of loops. But since only purl and knit stitches are used here, this means training it will go faster– it’s just important to figure out where to double crochet and which stitches to knit correctly. Having knitted 2 rows according to the description, then the work will be easier - the craftswomen are guided by the resulting pattern, which is presented in the photo and video.

Features of knitting pattern

Since many things can be knitted using English elastic, you should carefully consider the technique of using the pattern. Craftswomen give the following recommendations:

To a greater extent, it is recommended to use English elastic when knitting scarves and hats. mitt, shirtfront, leggings or stockings. Surprisingly, loose-fitting sweaters knitted with the presented pattern are in fashion today. If you follow all the above recommendations, the product will last a long time. Also recommended for knitting large sweaters use a model with sleeves raglan– this will prevent the already mentioned stretching and deformation. Make your most unexpected fantasies come true. To prevent deformation, it is better to take a stiffer thread (cotton, linen and other natural yarns).
