Between working weeks, according to the current legislation, there must be at least forty-two hours of uninterrupted rest. Therefore, public holidays, if they fall on weekends, must be postponed. This is especially true of the long New Year holidays and weekends in May. If a holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, that weekend is rescheduled.
As for when we go to work in January 2017, the answer is January 10th. It turns out that the second Saturday and Sunday of the month are added to the eight-day New Year holidays, which are officially fixed by law. The calendar was so formed in 2017 that it was necessary to transfer only January 1, which fell on Sunday. To increase the holidays in the year, it was decided to move January 1 to January 6.
As for January 2nd. It falls on a Monday and is a public holiday. It turns out that immediately with the onset of a new city, Russia is waiting for ten days off. You can already begin to actively prepare for this long vacation in order to spend it with benefit and pleasure.
What about other holidays in 2017
In February, we have a day off only on February 23 - Thursday, and on February 22 a shortened working day. In March, Russians also do not expect many days off, since March 8 is Wednesday and this is one official day off. In May, the days off are obtained - Monday May 1 and May 8 and 9.
As for the most popular question today about when we go to work after the New Year holidays in 2017, you already know - January 10th. It turns out that the New Year holidays will last nine days, but they will begin on Saturday, December 31, 2016.
Why such a long rest

But the coming year of 2017 will allow you to rest completely legally! According to the approved schedule of working days, the New Year festivities will end only on January 8th. If we count together with Saturday December 31, then this will be 9 days!

December 31, 2016 - Saturday, non-working day. For those who have a working six-day period, this day will be shortened.
Since the Law provides for the transfer of days off coinciding with holidays to other dates, we will receive “compensation” for them according to the following scheme:
for a non-working Saturday, January 1, the Russians will have a rest on February 24, on Friday, which, combined with the holiday on February 23, will give as much as 4 days of good rest.
For January 7, Saturday, the day off is postponed to May 8, Monday. On the eve of the Victory Day, an additional day off will also be a very good gift for us.

In 2016, December 31 falls on Saturday, so many can breathe a sigh of relief. True, there remains a category of citizens working on a six-day schedule. In this case, the right to a shorter working day remains.
Days off before the New Year or how will Russia celebrate the Christmas holidays?
Usually, immediately after the New Year, the Russians have the so-called holiday holidays, lasting about 10 days. Despite such long days for rest, only two holidays have the status of state holidays - New Year and Christmas. To make it more clear which days we will all rest and what are the transfers during the New Year holidays, you just need to take a closer look at the holiday schedule in January 2017.
1. December 31 (Saturday) - day off. For those working on a six-day schedule, the pre-holiday day shortened by an hour.
2. January 1 (Sunday) - New Year, public holiday, day off. Since it falls on Sunday, it will be moved to January 6th. 
8. January 7 (Saturday) - Christmas, a national holiday, a day off. Since it falls on Saturday, it is postponed to January 9th.
As a result, it turns out that the New Year holidays in Russia will last 10 days. Holidays start on December 31 and continue until January 10 of the next year. Schoolchildren will go to school, students to universities, and workers will disperse to their jobs on January 10 on Tuesday. If you look at the weekend globally, then in 10 days you can do a lot of things. By the way, not everyone expects such a long New Year's break in work: workers in the trade sector should appear at their workplaces on the morning of January 2.
Possibility of canceling the New Year holidays for adults
Not so long ago, a bill appeared in the State Duma under consideration, according to which the fixed New Year's holidays can be transferred to any other period throughout the year. The thing is that since almost all of Russia goes on a New Year's "spree", large enterprises stop for 10 days, thereby incurring enormous losses. That is why the government of the Russian Federation proposes that it is not easy to cancel 10 days off after the New Year, but to postpone them at any time when the person himself wants. For example, you can add them to your annual leave, and instead of 30 get 40 legal days of complete freedom. 
The noted bill was developed by deputies Alexei Didenko, Yaroslav Nilov, Mikhail Degtyarev and Vladimir Zhirinovsky. If the prepared resolution becomes legally binding, the day off after New Year's Eve will still be - January 1. By the way, the marked 10 days off are fully paid.

Labor Code on holidays in January
Article 112 of the Labor Code of the Russian Federation lists non-working holidays, incl. related to the New Year holidays.

Weekend transfer rules
If a non-working holiday coincides with a day off, then this day off is transferred to the working day following the holiday. This is a general rule, enshrined in Art. 112 of the Labor Code of the Russian Federation. However, it does not apply to public holidays in January. Of the January holidays coinciding with days off, the Labor Code allows only two days off to be postponed. This transfer procedure is approved by the Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation and is aimed at the rational use of weekends and non-working holidays.
Let us explain what this means with an example. With a five-day working week, the employee is entitled to two days off (Article 111 of the Labor Code of the Russian Federation). As a rule, it is Saturday and Sunday.
In January 2017, 3 non-working holidays fall on Saturday and Sunday - these are January 1, January 7 and January 8, 2017. However, only 2 holidays will be transferred to working days.
How to relax in January 2017
In accordance with Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation of 04.08.2016 No. 756 "On the transfer of days off in 2017", January 1, 2017, which falls on Sunday, is transferred to Friday, February 24, 2017, and Saturday, January 7, 2017 - to Monday, May 8. The third public holiday that falls on a weekend, Sunday 8 January 2017, is not rescheduled.
Thus, the New Year holidays in 2017 will last from January 1 to January 8, 2017, and given that December 31, 2016 is Saturday, we will rest from Saturday December 31, 2016 to Sunday January 8, 2017. The first working day of the new year will be Monday, January 9, 2017.
