How to make a hedgehog from potatoes

The “Hedgehog” craft from potatoes is very easy to make. You need to choose a vegetable of a suitable shape, mark on its surface the places where improvised needles will be stuck, and prepare the material for making the animal’s face.

Hedgehog with toothpick needles

Instead of needles, you can use toothpicks, pine needles, and plastic skewers. Pieces of plasticine, black peppercorns, and a nose - the cap of an acorn - will do an excellent job as eyes. You can decorate a forest dweller with flowers, rowan berries, and dried mushrooms.

Easy potato crafts are little people. Sometimes you don’t even need to use additional details - the shape of the vegetable already resembles some kind of fairy-tale hero or funny face, you just need to decorate it.

Potatoes that practically do not need to be changed

If you can’t find such a unique potato, you can take a regular oval one. It will be the torso. Using a toothpick, attach the head (a small round potato), make legs and arms from toothpicks.

It’s great if the face of an unusual person has a mustache, eyebrows, and eyes. Hair and a hat wouldn't hurt either.

Children will love crafts made from potatoes in the form of Smeshariki - popular cartoon characters. To complete them you will need:

  • toothpicks;
  • plasticine;
  • felt;
  • thick threads.

You can ask your child to make hats, scarves, and boots for Smeshariki.

If the kids like the cartoon about the brownie Kuzya, potatoes will allow them to make that too. Legs, arms and head can be cut from the vegetable and then attached to the body. Hair looks good if it is made of thick threads. Kids can draw eyes, nose and mouth or mold them from plasticine. You can hang rowan beads around Kuza’s neck.

Potato birds

Potatoes are optimal for making children's crafts in the shape of a bird. So, from one tuber you can make a body, from the second - a head. Cut legs and beak from carrots. The wings of a homemade bird can be made from feathers or pieces of pepper or plasticine collected in the park.

Potato duck

This is the advantage of children's autumn crafts - all the details in them can be replaced with whatever is at hand, and the result will not lose at all.

Another popular option is tuber cockerel. The connection of the body with the head is carried out here in the usual way - with the help of a wooden toothpick. In this case, it is important to leave part of the stick visible - it will be instead of a neck. If you cut off the sides of a potato, you get some kind of paws. You can cut notches on them and then connect them to the body. The tail, beak and comb should be prepared from thin carrot slices.

Using potatoes, it is easy to make a bird's nest in which a small chick sits. You need to cut the vegetable in half using a jagged motion to create halves that resemble a broken egg. Then scrape out the inner pulp from them and place the chick in the vacant space.

The bird can also be made from potatoes. It is not forbidden to use ready-made chicks - they are often sold in handicraft stores.

Various potato animals

As practice shows, most of all children like to make domestic and wild animals out of potatoes. Kids make beautiful bears, giraffes, horses, dogs, pigs, and frogs.

A hippopotamus is made quite quickly. You need to find two elongated tubers. The first will be used instead of the body, the second will turn into a huge open mouth of the beast. The teeth will be replaced by pieces of toothpicks or sharpened matches.

The eyes and nose can be made from pieces of plasticine, the tail from twisted knitting threads.

DIY rooster

If you have an idea to prepare a potato camel for an exhibition, you need to take time to find a tuber that will be shaped like the head of the animal. It needs to be fixed on a large round body, and then four legs made from small oblong potatoes must be added. If desired, the legs can be cut out with a knife. It is best to use cut potatoes as humps. Carnation eyes or peppercorns look good on a camel's face. The mouth should be drawn with a black marker.

Since potatoes are mostly round in shape, they are often used to make bears. Everything is simple here. You need to select an oblong body, attach a small rounded head and small paws to it. All elements are cut from potatoes.

Octopus

To make a honey lover look funny, you can give him a cardboard hat or a small bright scarf. If a child agrees to make a cardboard or plasticine pot of honey, that will be great. You can put it near the bear or give it to its paws.

Children can make crafts from potatoes for kindergarten and school all year round, because this vegetable stores well and is cheap at any time of the year. Therefore, if you did not have time to prepare leaves, acorns or chestnuts, do not worry - potatoes will always help you out.

Potatoes and carrots are made easily and quickly. In addition, it is the most accessible and cheapest material. It's easy to work with. Even a preschooler can cope with this task. Read, choose ideas. Try them out with your children!

Simple crafts

For different ages, you can do things with different levels of difficulty. For small children, it is enough to use the shape of a vegetable to create an animal by drawing or gluing eyes. Older children who already know how to safely handle a knife can be asked to make a figurine from individual parts of potatoes, carrots, zucchini, eggplant, or try their hand at a form of creativity such as carving. This is artistic cutting of vegetables and fruits.

So, start with the simplest:

  1. Take potatoes and carrots (you can have them with herbs).
  2. Cut the base for stability. Remove the spout from carrots with tops to preserve the “braids.” If you find an oddly shaped potato, try to preserve it as much as possible. It is better to secure the object on a solid base with matches or toothpicks.
  3. Glue on ready-made plastic eyes, which are sold in craft or gift wrap departments. You can use dried black peppercorns, placing them on matches, toothpicks, and needles.
  4. Use sticks of artificial or natural origin to make arms and legs.

Simple crafts from potatoes and carrots can be created in a few minutes. Take additional materials according to the child’s age. Young children can simply draw eyes with a felt-tip pen if they cannot yet work with pins and other small elements.

Carving

Crafts made from potatoes and carrots made using this technique look especially impressive. It is an artistic carving of food products. Vegetables, fruits, and berries are most often used. Professionals make such products using special ones. A beginner can try his hand using a regular knife or vegetable peeler. Tools should be as sharp as possible.

Two methods of working with materials are used:

  1. Cutting a shape from a whole object.
  2. Assembling a composition from chopped parts.

Schoolchildren will be able to master crafts using this technique. For example, the flowers shown in the photo above are made from carrot slices. Start with the simplest option, which is located in the lower right corner.

It's easy to make a rose using the second method. Using a vegetable peeler, cut thin strips of carrots and twist them into a spiral. To connect, take pieces of toothpicks. In addition, you can try cutting out simple shapes of petals and leaves with a regular knife to assemble a composition from them.

Required tools and materials

So, to make crafts from potatoes and carrots, in addition to the vegetables themselves, you will need the following:

  • connecting elements (toothpicks, matches, sharpened sticks);
  • knife for making a base;
  • decor to make eyes, nose, mouth (peppercorns, beads, pins with heads);
  • felt-tip pens, plasticine for decoration;
  • vegetable peeler and carving tools in case of complex crafts.

From such simple and affordable materials you can get wonderful things.

with your own hands

The most common product themes are as follows:

  • animals;
  • birds;
  • fairy tale characters;
  • little men.

They use both whole objects and individual parts. You can cut any shape.

DIY carrot crafts can be made from only one material or with the addition of other vegetables and herbs. Carrot cuts, both round and at an angle, provide a large field for creativity. The former will produce flowers if the edge is cut in the form of petals, and the latter will produce leaves. Thin parts can even be processed with scissors.

DIY crafts made from potatoes

They are made in the same way as with carrots. You can connect individual parts together with matches, toothpicks, cut out patterns and complex shapes on the surface, arrange processed sections, cubes, etc.

If you have objects of different sizes at your disposal, it’s easy to combine them to get original potato crafts. The photo clearly demonstrates the ease of creating a caterpillar from small elements that are usually thrown away when digging in a summer cottage.

If you find a specimen of an unusual shape, which is typical for this vegetable, use its uniqueness to the maximum. Often you come across samples that require virtually no additions.

If you want to surprise others with originality, make your own openwork crafts from potatoes. You can cut flowers, leaves, letters, numbers from the root vegetable.

Combined products

The most unusual crafts, which are easy to make, are obtained by combining several different vegetables, herbs and other materials of different textures. Give free rein to your imagination. Make crafts from potatoes and carrots with your child. You can use the ideas presented in the photo in the article, or come up with your own character. We suggest making an old forest man. For the feet and palms, take halves of small potatoes; make arms, legs, and nose from small carrots. You'll get a funny fantasy hero.

You can complement the product with threads. The mane of a horse and the hair of a man are made from yarn. “Dressed” vegetables look unusual. A simple sundress or shirt can be obtained by wrapping a piece of fabric around a carrot and sewing it with a couple of stitches in different places.

Plasticine is useful as an additional material. Eyes, noses, tails, ears and all kinds of decor are sculpted from it. Matches or toothpicks are used not only as fasteners. They are suitable for simulating hedgehog needles. Just stick them into a potato and the craft is ready. By the way, you can work with both raw and cooked vegetables. If this direction interests the child, he will be able to make edible decorations for the holiday or everyday table, and not just the mandatory tasks of the teacher.

So, you can make crafts from potatoes and carrots for a school or kindergarten quickly and at minimal cost. It all depends on the complexity of the object you want to obtain and the age of the author of the work.

Potatoes are a very popular material for making children's crafts. However, there are a number of restrictions for making figures from raw potatoes. This is due to the fact that the tubers immediately darken when cut. Therefore, only whole potatoes are used in this craft.

The beauty of this autumn tuberous vegetable is that without any modifications, some specimens are already ready-made figurines of animals or fairy-tale characters. In collaboration with nature, you can easily show the world an invaluable example of design art. What you need: care, a couple of suitable details, such as a hat, etc., and a large degree of luck.

If you decide to make crafts from potatoes, don’t be afraid to supplement them with other vegetables. Such bold combinations can result in a gentle sheep or a wayward giraffe.

Crafts from raw potatoes

Lamb

The following are involved in making a sheep: cauliflower - it produces a white curly coat, a potato - it serves as a muzzle, and a couple of small white onions or radishes in the form of trusting eyes.

Giraffe

To create a giraffe you will need carrots. The orange queen of vegetables is perfect for the neck. Potatoes are used to make the head and body of a guest from Africa. It is convenient to make the legs and horns of the craft from twigs.

You can make a giraffe without using a carrot; it will be replaced by an even long branch.

The following crafts use only potatoes with small additions of thread and branches.

horse

It’s easy to make this simple craft from three oblong potatoes. This craft is quite suitable for creativity lessons in kindergartens. From sticks - legs. From potatoes - head, neck and torso. From threads - mane and tail. From acorn caps - hooves.

Deer

Here's another kid's potato craft. To make it we will need two tubers, one of which is twice the size of the other. We make a head from a small potato: we mark the eyes with cloves (this seasoning is sold in any grocery store), we form horns from spreading branches. We make the hind legs from single branches growing at an angle. The front legs are just two straight branches. We strengthen all four legs in a larger potato. A small branch will be the tail. Both parts of the body are connected to each other by a toothpick.

Birdie

You can make a bird using the same principle. Body and head made of potatoes. We make the beak of the craft from two seeds. The paws, like those of a deer, are made of twigs. The tail is colored feathers. You can also make a perky crest on your head.

Hedgehog

Perhaps the potato hedgehog is the most favorite children's craft of all time. It can be made from potatoes or apples. The manufacturing technology is the same: several dozen toothpicks are attached to a potato or apple body; these are hedgehog needles. The eyes and nose can be made from black peppercorns (it is sold in the same department as cloves).

Crafts from boiled potatoes

Much more possibilities for modeling from potatoes open up if you boil them. In crafts, it then becomes possible to use not only whole tubers, but also segments.

Cheburashka

For this potato craft, you will need half a tuber, which will be the body. From a smaller half of a potato we make a head. White slices will be a face and a belly. For the ears you will need another potato. Cut it in half and cut off the convex part from each half. The stems are also two halves of one tuber, placed cut side down. Handles can be made from halves of two small potatoes. All parts of the craft are connected with toothpicks. We make a face out of cloves.

Bear

Potatoes can become a material for making such a welcoming bear. If instead of a barrel of honey you put a tray of fruit in his paws, this potato craft could well be included in the “Gifts of Autumn” exhibition. The whole figure is made according to the Cheburashka principle. To make hands, mentally divide half a potato into four parts and cut out one of the parts. It is important to find the right potato for the face.

If corn is the queen of fields, then potatoes are the king of crafts for designers from 3 to 12 years old. And their parents.

In this article, I have collected cute potato crafts that your children can make with their own hands. Such crafts are suitable as competition entries for an autumn exhibition at school. I will tell you how to make such children's crafts from potatoes and give links to other competitive crafts on the theme of autumn. We also have another large article that contains ideas for crafts for other vegetables - onions, cabbage, radishes, carrots, etc.

So let's see what kids can make from regular potatoes. Fun and easy crafts for kids.

Potato craft

LITTLE MOUSE.

We will need a little fluffy wire for the ears and tail. Fluffy wire can be replaced with regular wire coated with sticky plasticine, which will give the desired thickness.

If desired, you can make a fluffy plasticine tail and ears. If you coat the wire with plasticine, then cover it with nail polish and while the polish is not too high, attach more fluffy fibers to it - they can be made by cutting very finely woolen threads with scissors.

The legs are ordinary matches. If desired, at the lower end of each match leg you can make SLIPPERS - round olives or pieces of potatoes or carrots.

Potato lion.

Children's craft.

To a large potato, attach a smaller potato to a toothpick (one or two) (this will be the head on the lion’s body). Next, we stick a lot of orange wire into the head - this will be the lion’s mane. But not everyone has fluffy wire. Therefore, I offer these decorative options for this potato craft.

You can make a mane from woolen threads– just tangle them into a ball or sausage and stick them around the lion’s head.

Can be painted orange cotton pads. Dry them - tear them into fluffy pieces and paste them around your head. The cotton wool is attached well to the nail polish (the potato surface must be perfectly dry before gluing).

Potato craft

for children.

This children's craft also has a head mounted on 2 toothpicks (on one it will spin, and on two it will be fixed at the rotation and tilt we need).

We cut out a nose from a piece of carrot and also place it on 2 toothpicks. We cut out the paws from orange peels. You can add a tail and wings (for example, from onion slices). Or they can be painted with gouache on the sides of the duck’s body).

You can make such an owl craft with your own hands from potatoes and other vegetables. The wings are knife cuts. Carrot beak. Eyes can be made from onion rings, round cucumber slices, or sculpted from plasticine.

If your potato has a shoot of a narrower shape, then you can use a knife. make a heel cut on it, and we will have a pork snout. Add a mouth, ears, eyes and the pig craft is ready. You can paint the craft in a delicate pink color with gouache.

Potato craft

UNCLE WALVUS.

Wash the potatoes and dry them. We make hands from fluffy wire. You can make hands from ordinary wire thickened with plasticine.

We cut out the eyes, eyebrows and mustache of the walrus from thick paper. If you don't have colored paper at home, you can cut out the walrus parts from a thick washcloth.

If you are lucky, you can find a potato whose topography will resemble a fur seal. It can also be added to our walrus craft.

Go to the market– there they sell unformatted, irregularly shaped potatoes at a low price. Or go to the hypermarket, where in the vegetable department you can choose unpacked potatoes, poured loose into boxes.

You can do it near the walrus sandy beach - on the lid of a shoe box. Place potato stones on the beach. Draw a seashore. Soak a cardboard egg carton in boiling water - when it swells, tear it into pieces. Beat with a mixer (or knead with your hands). And squeeze the cloth onto the sieve - twist the cloth very, very tightly so that all the liquid is forced out. You will end up with a sticky papery dough. The sea with its crested waves is incongruous. We paint the sea in blue gouache, and the edges of the scallops in white - imitating sea foam.

We place our piece of the sea on the lid of a shoe box. We pour sea sand next to the surf - we create a beach area for our walrus. It is better to sprinkle the sand on the PVA glue - let it sit so that the glue sets and then shake off the excess. This way the craft will not crumble.

If desired, you can launch other characters into the ocean. Shark, crabs and more.

Below we see a shark made from eggshells. But using the same scheme, you can make a shark in the form of a potato craft. We cut out the teeth and tail from paper and attach them to the potato - glue the teeth and insert the tail into the slot.

And you can make it even cooler. Shark mouth cut into potato. Paint the inner cut and soak it in paint - like a red mouth. Stick rows of short pieces of toothpicks along the edges of the mouth, top and bottom, paint them with white gouache - these will be real shark teeth.

Potato crafts

For small children.

We wash the potatoes and dry them. We spread it with nail polish - a thick layer and attach buckwheat to the polish. Let it dry. And repeat the procedure in other bald places. It is better to make the eyes and nose from plasticine - they will turn out expressive - with white whites and black pupils.

An apple for a hedgehog can be made using the papier-mâché technique. Soak egg cartons in boiling water. Knead the paper dough in your hand. Squeeze out excess moisture through the cloth. Make an apple and let it dry for a day or two. Paint with gouache and spray with nail polish.

You can also cover the potatoes with cotton wool. Add black plasticine legs. Sad eyes and nose. You will get a fluffy sheep craft.

You can find potatoes of such a shape that the sheep’s face is a little more elongated and oval. This way there will be more similarities.

Potato crafts

and white radish.

White radish root can be used as a partner vegetable in making potato crafts. Potatoes will produce round shapes, while radishes will produce oval and cylindrical shapes.

And if you come across a large, thick radish with an interesting shape, it can become an independent craft for a competition in kindergarten or school.

Potato head.

for children.

You can make funny little people out of potatoes. You can cut out ready-made facial features - from glossy magazines. Whole mouth and eyes. A wig can be made from finely chopped wool threads. From a washcloth or cloth. Or sculpt plasticine curls.

You can decorate the potato head with waste or craft material. Or add vegetables for the design of the head - tufts of cabbage for the hair, carrots for the nose.

Potato crafts

For girls.

You can make a potato princess. Great craft for girls. You can use sparkles, sequins, adhesive rhinestones. Make arms and legs from wire or toothpicks with the addition of plasticine.

And next to such a craft, erect a real princess castle made from toilet paper rolls.

Potato crafts

For boys.

And for boys you can make man-made crafts from potatoes. It is interesting and exciting to make robots, spaceships, lunar rovers and other equipment from potatoes. You can stick wires and screws into it, cut pocket holes for batteries and drill passages for wires that will ensure the LEDs glow.

Here are ideas for robots made from pumpkins and chestnuts - which may inspire you to do similar crafts using potatoes.

What's stopping you from making a techno-knight out of potatoes? It will turn out even cooler. The main thing is to find more unnecessary pieces of hardware in dad’s closet. Well, coordinate your creative theft with your father when he comes home from work - so that it doesn’t turn out that you took expensive and valuable equipment for the craft.

Potatoes also make scary monster crafts. Or aliens.

Potato crafts

On the theme of cartoons.

You can make your favorite cartoon characters from potatoes and other vegetables.

We attach all the parts to toothpicks. To prevent the part from spinning, we fasten it with two matches. This way the fixation will maintain the desired tilt and rotation angle. Small parts attach well to nail polish or rubber glue. And also with glue from a hot glue gun.

You can make your favorite cartoons from potatoes with your own hands. Cheburashka and potatoes and Gena the Crocodile made from cucumber will be a good choice for a crafts competition at school or kindergarten.

Plasticine attaches perfectly to the surface of dry potatoes. Therefore, from round spherical potatoes you can make a team of smeshariki. We add all the missing parts from plasticine, paint the potatoes in the desired color with gouache (fixing the coloring with hairspray). We get an absolute resemblance to cartoon characters.

You can sew clothes from felt and fabric for potato heroes. To bring the resemblance closer to the original.

You can cut out character details - a smile, the belly of a potato paw - just with a knife.

You can cut out clothes for crafts inside another vegetable. For example, the onesies on the minions below are halves of eggplants, from which all the pulp was taken out and the potato bodies of the minions were inserted inside.

These are the ideas for crafts for children made from potatoes that you received today. There is something to think about and fantasize about. Good luck with your ideas. Quick work. And winning a crafts competition.
