World Library Day. Information hour: International School Library Day. And the state of the soul is special

International School Library Day is celebrated in many countries every year on the fourth Monday of October, since 1999 at the initiative of UNESCO. Moreover, every year it is dedicated to a specific topic.
It was first proclaimed by the President of the International Association of School Librarianship (IASL) Blanche Woolles. In 2005, the official status of the holiday was confirmed by the new president of this organization, Peter Jenko. In 2008, this event reached a new level - in January, project coordinator Rick Mulholland announced that International School Library Day would be transformed into a month, also international. In October of the same year, the first International School Library Month took place under the theme “Literacy and learning in your school library.” Participants in the action could choose any day during the month to hold events dedicated to school libraries. Some, however, did not limit themselves to one day or even a week, but announced long-term events - such as collecting books throughout the month.

In Russia, the International School Library Month was first held in 2008. Then his motto became the words “The school library is on the agenda.” That year the foundation of the traditional monthly program was laid. It included congresses of school librarians, presentations of the “teacher-librarian” profession, honoring veterans of librarianship, training seminars, numerous events for schoolchildren (competitions, conferences, exhibitions, book collections) and their parents and teachers. And these celebration traditions continue today and are becoming increasingly widespread. The main event of the month in Russia remains the Forum of School Librarians, which takes place in Mikhailovsky (Pushkin Nature Reserve in the Pskov region).

Purpose of information : increasing the level of information culture of students.

International School Library Day is celebrated on the fourth Monday of October. In 2016, the events take place on October 24. The initiative to create and hold the holiday was taken by UNESCO in 1999. Its goal was to attract public attention to the condition, formation and replenishment of literary reserves in school libraries.

The event was first celebrated on October 25, 1999. In 2005, the official status of this day was secured by the head of the International Association of School Libraries. The year 2008 was marked by great changes. Then in October the first School Libraries Month took place. Participants in this action were able to independently choose a day or week to hold their holiday events dedicated to these institutions - book depositories. Russia first celebrated this event in 2008 by organizing School Libraries Month.

Traditionally, on this holiday, book collections are held for the needs of libraries, meetings with authors of works, presentations, conferences, and competitions are organized. With the help of students, librarians prepare wall newspapers and decorate school corners.

The school library instills in students the need for constant self-education, develops imagination, and fosters civic responsibility.

And the first-grader, and the school graduate, and the teacher, and the director of the educational institution are involved in a common orbit, whose name is education. It has been proven that collaboration between librarians and teachers helps improve students' literacy levels, promotes the development of reading and memorization skills, as well as the development of the ability to use information and communication technologies.

Along with the ability to write, read and count today is the ability to independently search for the necessary information, mastery of reading culture skills, which includes:
- Conscious and interested attitude towards the book, knowledge of the rules of handling it and reading hygiene;
- Possession of the skills to independently select books, the ability to use catalogues, card indexes, recommended literature lists;
- Acquaintance with different types of reference literature: dictionaries, encyclopedias, reference books, training in independent work with them to expand and deepen the knowledge acquired by students in the classroom.
It is a fair statement that it is the interest in books that unites people at all times, fosters a culture of communication, and is a bearer of moral and spiritual values. Being a kind of “lifeline,” the school library opens its doors to everyone, helps children spend their free time meaningfully and interestingly, and helps parents in the harmonious upbringing of their children. It is in the library that children get their first idea of the immensity of the book world and learn to use reference literature. Instilling in a child a love of books, cultivating a thirst for knowledge, the need to comprehend the world around him, and teaching the skills of a reading culture are the main tasks of the school library.

Reading shapes your outlook on life and lays down many moral qualities. Sometimes it influences a person in contrast to the impressions of the surrounding world, preserving and creating personality. For many people of the older generation, the habit of reading, established in childhood, is recognized as one of the most necessary for internal comfort.

According to research by psychologists, reading has a healing effect on a person. It turns out that reading helps with insomnia, toothaches, headaches, and indigestion. For example, Russian classical literature is recommended for nervous disorders and depressive conditions. Thus, literature influences physical health, but physical health is connected with our mental state.

By improving the spiritual state and thereby “charging” a person with positive energy, reading books has an imperceptible, but beneficial and powerful effect on us and our health.

And the main thing is not that, while reading, say, a detective story, we get carried away, switch our attention, and the toothache stops bothering us. The main thing is that the habit of constantly reading serious literature harmonizes the personality and establishes a positive attitude towards life. For a growing, immature person, this is very important. Adults often complain of fatigue from the flow of negative information, “negative” impressions that literally invade our lives - from screens, on the radio, from the pages of newspapers... But adults know that it should be “wrong”, that this is not the “norm” existence, that there should be much more in life - joyful, bright. The child's psyche is like a sponge, trustingly absorbing all impressions; it has no selection criteria and has not developed ways to protect itself from negative influences. There appears a rejection of life, a rejection of the environment, in which only gloomy and black things are perceived. The result is a growing number of childhood neuroses. The physical health of the younger generation is ensured, first of all, by spiritual health. And here the role of reading cannot be overestimated.

Useful tips.

1. Reading sharpens your eyes.

You will better understand and see the world and people around you, and most importantly, yourself. Be sure to read a good book again - you will probably see something new there.

2. Reading keeps you physically healthy.

Putting letters into words, words into images, realizing what the author wanted to express with them, and finding your own explanation for them is gymnastics for the brain. Without any risk of injury!

3. Reading has a positive impact on the environment.

If you are reading a book, it means that the tree from which it is made was not cut down in vain. There's no need to waste electricity or buy batteries to read books, and they're lighter than a laptop. You read, which means you cannot drive a car or walk on the streets, which leads to a reduction in traffic jams and queues.

4. Reading will teach you how to communicate.

Your interesting remarks will miraculously transform even boring conversations about yesterday's sporting events or television program. And your growing talent as a storyteller will allow you to easily take credit for the adventures of fictional characters. This makes a particularly big impression on people who hardly read.

5. Reading helps you spend your free time.

You will never get tired of reading books, because there are so many of them that even a few lifetimes will not be enough to read them all. You'll have to try a lot of different genres before you find books that you really enjoy. Don't give up until you find "your" book, because it can change your life.

6. Reading gives you peace of mind.

Parents, teachers and other adults will be so happy to see the child reading that they will not bother him again.

7. Reading is good for your wallet.

Firstly, books are cheaper than computer games. Secondly, your friends won’t have to worry about choosing a gift if they find out that you like to read. (There is one “but”: make wish lists, otherwise you will have to be content with only bestsellers.) And thirdly, for those who did not receive a book as a gift, there are always libraries - books there do not cost anything.

8. Reading helps you concentrate.

You can read while listening to music or during classes: read and not pay attention to the fuss around you. A trained reader can watch four programs in parallel without any problems, switching channels all the time. If you wish, you can read on public transport.

9. Reading is good for your figure.

Don't be afraid to gain extra pounds. A reading person does not need high-calorie food to cope with the hardships of a boring life. With a book you can travel as far as you wish and make your wildest dreams come true. It’s harder to seduce you with popcorn: after all, the “movie” is already playing in your head.

10. Reading is good for parents.

Watching a child enjoy a book helps adults get into reading too, even if they are too busy to read. Adults will be grateful to the child for the newfound happiness.

History and traditions of World School Library Day

Let's talk about the history and traditions of the holiday. International School Library Day has been celebrated in different countries of the world on the initiative of UNESCO since 1999. The initiator of the holiday was the President of the International Association of School Libraries, Blanche Woolles. In 2005, the holiday received official status.

In 2008, School Librarian Month was dedicated to School Librarian Day, which was first celebrated under the motto “Literacy and learning in your school library.”

In our country, the month was also celebrated for the first time in 2008, under the motto “School library is on the agenda.” The main event of the month in Russia was the Forum of school librarians in the Mikhailovsky-Pushkinsky Nature Reserve in the Pskov region.

The history of school libraries in our country goes back several centuries. The first educational library in Rus' appeared in the 1630s at the Kiev-Mohyla Academy.

During the reign of Peter the Great, a library was created at the Academy of Sciences. At the same time, the first school libraries appeared: “At schools, the library should be content, because without a library, the Academy is like without a soul.”

In the 18th century, the formation of the state education system began. For each class, their own schools were created, at which libraries appeared.

In the 1830s, there were 62 gymnasium libraries and several dozen at district schools in Russia.

However, librarianship received real development only under Soviet rule. In the 1930s, there were already over 44 thousand school libraries in our country.

And currently there are more than 62 thousand libraries of educational institutions in Russia.

In addition to School Librarian Day, our country celebrates All-Russian Library Day (May 27).

Despite the fact that the librarian profession, like libraries themselves, is gradually dying out, there are still people in our country who will celebrate their professional holiday on May 27 - Librarian's Day.

history of the holiday

This holiday was established by Boris Nikolaevich Yeltsin back in 1995. According to the text of the decree, the new holiday was a worthy response to the contribution of the country's librarians to the development of cultural ties in Russian society. In his decision, the president was guided by another date that happened several centuries ago. On May 27, 1795, the first public library was founded in Russia. The assortment of the new establishment was small, but now everyone could familiarize themselves with the text. If, of course, he could read.

All-Russian Librarian Day should be celebrated widely, at least, this is what is said in the recommendation to local governments. This urgent recommendation should not be ignored in order to avoid possible problems. Therefore, when the day of the librarian comes, a wide variety of events are held: meetings with famous writers, seminars on literature, and much more. What the authorities have enough desire and resources to do.

The very first library

Officially, the first accessible library opened only at the end of the 18th century, however, according to the latest research by historians, the library operated during the time of Yaroslav the Wise, when there were no people who could read, and there were no books at all. This event is dated 1037.

In the most reading country in the world, the libraries were the best, largest and most beautiful. Huge book depositories, as they were called then in official, official language, contained the entire cultural and historical heritage of Russia, and were constantly replenished with new, ideologically correct texts, folded into thick books. First, the Bolsheviks took and robbed the loot, nationalizing all the royal libraries. Private home libraries, the number of books in which numbered more than 500 copies, also went to the benefit of the young Soviet state. In the USSR, everyone read (again, if possible), but most of all, Lenin’s faithful friend, Nadezhda Konstantinovna Krupskaya, loved books. She was not only fanatically devoted to books, but literally obsessed with literature.

The book is the source of life

In the USSR, books were treated as shrines, and libraries were turned into temples. People went there in droves and sacrificed their free time, in return taking all the necessary information, and at the same time received great literary pleasure.

In our time

Today the number of libraries in Russia is declining, but at the same time their number is still incredibly large: 150 thousand libraries! A huge figure that again puts our country in the category of the most reading countries. Library Day is most widely celebrated in Moscow, where the largest number of so-called temples of literature are located.

Russian State Library

One of the largest libraries in the world is located in Moscow. But at the moment it can only boast of its size; alas, the interior decoration leaves much to be desired. With the development of the Internet, information on paper is less and less in demand, which means there are fewer and fewer visitors to libraries. And as a result, funding for libraries is being reduced. The government or private investors are more likely to allocate money to digitize existing copies rather than build additional storage that meets temperature standards suitable for storing books.

Russian National Library

Even though the average person spends less and less time visiting libraries, this does not mean that they should be abolished! Knowledge of history is one of the most important factors for avoiding the mistakes of the past, and therefore for the future. The Russian National Library, which is located in St. Petersburg, is one of these treasures, the first book depository of which was opened in 1795! Important documents from the times of Catherine the Great and Alexander the Great are collected here.

Old Believers

It is becoming less and less common to find people in transport reading paper books, and tablets, smartphones and e-books are increasingly being used as information storage media. A person reading a paper book is nonsense for Moscow, and more and more often such people are called Old Believers. And maintaining a large analog home library is much more expensive than storing the same amount of information on a flash drive.

Librarians will live forever

In this case, we are not talking about a specific person, but about a profession. Only a qualified, intelligent librarian can help you navigate the huge flow of low-quality literature and find a real masterpiece. So, if you don’t know which book to pick up in the very near future, and the Internet and your friends won’t give you any good advice, sign up the old fashioned way at one of the nearest libraries and ask for advice.

When is Librarian Day 2019

International School Library Day appeared in the register of holidays in 1999 at the initiative of UNESCO. Since then, it has been celebrated annually every fourth Monday in October. But in 2008, one holiday was replaced by School Library Month. Now every organization can choose any suitable day for holding a holiday and events.

The main goal of the month is to attract public attention to school libraries that need regular replenishment of classical and modern literature. As part of School Library Day, events are held to collect books from volunteers, meetings with authors and interesting people, literary presentations, professional conferences and competitions.

There should be silence in the school library,
And in the rustle of the pages there music is heard,
Here the letters come to life to perform a miracle,
We cannot help but love the school library.
