How to sew a skirt
Make a cut along the back seam as shown in Fig. 1. We will sew into the back seam
Description of work:
- Baste and stitch the side seams.
- Sew a hidden zipper along the back seam.
- Sew a belt into the circle skirt.
- Fold up the circle skirt at the bottom and hem it by hand with blind stitches.

The products included in a belly dance costume are sewn using this principle; they are usually made of shiny heavy silk, satin and decorated with numerous coins, sequins, beads and fringe, often with slits crossing the hem almost to the middle of the thigh.
Most wedding dresses in the traditional style are sewn using the circle skirt principle. What will go best with it? First of all, these should be things that emphasize femininity: a blouse is preferable to a shirt, and a thin top with lace is better than a T-shirt or a sports-style T-shirt, unless, of course, you are going to join the hippie company.
The good thing about a long skirt is that it goes well with shoes with any heel: from thin stiletto heels to completely flat soles. The most impressive look are the different weaves of belts and different types of sandals, which are the most fashionable shoes of this season. For jewelry, thin long beads, necklaces, and a series of thin small bracelets that can be worn both on the wrists and ankles are best suited.
In summer collections, circle skirts are usually found in images inspired by Eastern culture, and this is not surprising, because it is Arabic and Indian attributes that make a woman more mysterious and attractive! Skirt sun- This is one of the types of cut skirts. This model looks equally good on any figure. Overweight women rarely risk wearing such a skirt, thinking that it will increase the volume of their hips. However, this is not so, the main thing is to choose the right fabric, pattern, and find the appropriate level for the start of the flare. By lowering the level of the beginning of the flare, you can visually reduce the volume of your hips.
- This is a regular circle with a hole for the waist. By changing the radii of the circles for the waist and bottom of the skirt, you can tailor the skirt that best suits you in length, fullness and volume.
To create a sun skirt pattern, as an example, take the following body measurements:
OT - waist = 76 cm
Diz - product length = 60 cm
Constructing a sun skirt pattern
1. Point O is marked on the horizontal line, from which a value equal to the radius is plotted to the left and to the right, which is found using the formula: K * measure OT, Where
2. A semicircle is drawn through points T 1, T 2, and then a new point T is obtained.
3. From points T 1, T 2, T, set aside the required length of the skirt + 2 cm (allowance for the hem of the bottom).
T 1 H 1 = T 2 H 2 = TH = 60 cm + 2 cm = 62 cm.
4. In order to adjust the tail in the middle of the front downward, since it looks larger when moving, straighten the waist line. To do this, rise up 2 cm from point T.
TT 3 = 2 cm.
Draw a new waist line through points T 1, T 3, T 2.
Draw a new bottom line through points H 1, H 3, H 2.
6. If the sun skirt is one-seam or two-seam, then in order to create an artificial braid of fabric in the area of the seams for easier drawdown, along the bottom of the skirt you can reduce the tail by 2-12 cm. Moreover, if the fabric does not stretch well, cut off up to 12 cm , if good - 2 cm.
Options for laying out details of sun skirt patterns on fabric
Option 1.
With a skirt length of up to 60 cm, you can cut a circle without seams from fabric 150 cm wide.
The fastener is made in a section in the middle of the back.
Option 2.
Long skirts (or when cut from narrow fabric) are cut in two semicircles with side seams. The fastener is placed in the side seam.
Option 3.
Despite the presence of side seams into which a zipper can be inserted, sometimes it is more convenient (or the model requires it) to insert a zipper in the middle of the back. To do this, the back semicircle is cut with a middle seam.
For cutting, it is convenient to fold the fabric in 2 layers with a transverse fold.
By the way! Even long circle skirts can be cut out in a single circle without seams, as in example 1, if you use fabrics 280 or 300 cm wide. Voile, tulle and other fabrics of this width are sold in the curtain fabric department.
Cut long sun skirts without side seams
The problem with cutting long skirts is that the fabric is not wide enough to cut a full circle without side seams.
However, the circle can be cut out with extensions of those parts that extend beyond the width of the fabric. These seams create semicircles on the sides and look like a design element in finished products. And if the extension is small, then such seams at the bottom look completely invisible.
When cutting, do not forget about the allowances for attaching the extensions!
The influence of the direction of the warp threads on the details of the skirt on the position of its tails
In a conical skirt, the tails lie well if its parts are cut on the bias. By changing the direction of the warp threads on the skirt parts, you can control the position of the tails.
Option 1 - the tails are formed at the side seam of the skirt and in the middle between the side seam and the center line of the part.
Option 2 - tails are formed at the center line of the part and at the side seam.
Option 3 - tails are formed at the center line of the part, at the side seam and between them.
The sequence of sewing a sun skirt
1. Cut out the details of the skirt from fabric, adding 1-1.5 cm at the waist and 1-2 cm at the side seams.
2. All seams of the skirt are sewn down by pulling. The pull is continued with an iron, ironing the seam. Each seam is either pressed or ironed. When processing allowances, they are also pulled back.
Note. Before sewing seams from very loose fabric, their allowances and going beyond the allowance by 0.2-0.5-0.7 cm are glued with an adhesive strip.
3. Along the waist allowance, a gathering stitch is made and the waist is ironed.
6. Adjusting the hem of the skirt
Skirts cut in the bias direction of the warp threads should hang down on the mannequin or on a hanger so that the fibers of the fabric cut along the bias take the desired position (stretch).
You can help stretch the skirt fabric on the bias by hanging weights in the appropriate areas. Small bags are filled with bulk materials - small pebbles, buckwheat, millet, etc. All bags should be the same weight, they are sewn at a distance of 10 cm from each other to a twill tape 2 meters or more long.
After the skirt has sagged, put it on the figure or on a mannequin and secure it at the waistline. Measure from the waist the specified length of the skirt plus the hem allowance and mark it. Measure the distance from the floor to this mark and set this value upward from the floor along the entire length of the bottom of the skirt. Remove the skirt and align the hem line with the marks. Trim off the excess.
7. Process and iron the bottom of the skirt in any way: a hem seam with an open cut, a hem seam with a closed cut, a ribbed seam, in the color of the product, simply with an overlocker, a zigzag, or processed with lace.

Choosing fabric for a skirt
When planning to sew a skirt, first of all you need to decide what material it will be made of. For skirts of this style, different materials are selected. Batiste, satin, chiffon, thin types of knitwear and wool are especially popular.
Skirts of this cut made from translucent, weightless fabrics look good, especially if they are made in multi-layers. For such skirts, you can combine fabrics of different colors (for example, colored and plain), the layers of the skirt can be made of different lengths.
You can buy fabric for sewing a skirt either in an online store or in a regular fabric store, but special attention should be paid to the density of the material.

Step-by-step instructions for sewing a circle skirt, creating a pattern, calculating the fabric
Skirt is the sun: cutting and calculating the required amount of fabric is the most difficult stage of the entire process, so let’s take a closer look. Let's start from the very beginning, namely with the sketch. Here I advise you not to invent any complex designs if you are sewing for the first time; besides, the classic shape of a flared skirt is A-shaped. To make the item original, you can play with the color and texture of the fabric. Also, you can always decorate the skirt at your discretion with decorative elements, be it flowers, stones, lace. So, having drawn a sketch, you need to take your measurements in order to purchase the required amount of fabric and create the correct pattern. You need only 2 measurements: waist circumference and the length of the future circle skirt (flared). After taking the measurements, we build a pattern, because... Our skirt is essentially round, we need to cut out “room for the waist”. We calculate it using the formula waist circumference / 2π, where π = 3.14. The resulting value will be the radius of the circle for the waist. To see what I mean, look at the picture below. 
Before going to the store, you will also need to calculate the required amount of fabric. Consumption is calculated using the following formula: waist circumference / 2π + skirt length + hem allowance. In order not to make a mistake and buy a sufficient amount of material, remember the rule that the consumption calculated using the formula should not exceed the width of the material. If this happens, then you will have to lay out the pattern on the fabric in 1 layer and cut out 2 semicircles.
If you doubt that you have made the correct calculation, contact a consultant at a fabric store for help. By the way, among fabrics it is better to give preference to cotton, because... It will be much easier to sew a circle skirt (flared) from it. 
Circle skirt: with zipper and elastic
After purchasing the material, you need to decide which version of the skirt to sew: with a zipper or with an elastic band.
In order to sew a skirt with a zipper, you need a circle of fabric, folded in four times, cut lengthwise along the fold. Insert a zipper into the resulting cut, and cover the upper cut with a belt or braid. Be careful: the zipper should not come undone on the finished product.
With a skirt with an elastic band, everything is even simpler, just use the hip circumference when taking measurements and creating a pattern. A drawstring made of a strip of fabric folded in half, the length of which is the circumference of the hips plus 2 cm, is sewn to the upper cut; then insert an elastic band into the drawstring. 
After you have sewn on the zipper or elastic, finish the bottom edge of the garment: the skirt is ready to wear! By the way, if you don’t have a sewing machine, then it’s better to sew a circle skirt with an elastic band and secure the bottom edge with adhesive tape (in this case, add another 1.5 cm to the length of the product).

1. Let's start working with taking measurements for sewing a conical skirt. You only need 2 measurements:
Waist circumference - From. For my skirt From = 68 cm.
Product length - Di For my skirt St = 40 cm.

2. We calculate how much fabric is needed. You will need knowledge of some formulas, without mathematics:
We calculate the radius R using the formula for circumference:
C= 2p R, R=C:2p, where: C is St:2, p is the constant PI=3.14.
R=68:6.28 = 11cm
We add up the results and multiply by 2:
R+ Di+ 10cm. (for hem and shrinkage, if the fabric is cotton or linen, if synthetic, 5 cm is enough).
(11+40+10)x 2=61x2=122 cm. We buy 1 m 20cm
3. Preparing fabric for cutting:
Decatation: wash the fabric in hot water (the water temperature is the same at which you will wash the finished product), dry it, iron it.
We check if there are any defects and mark them with chalk on the reverse side.
4. Cut out the skirts:
Fold the fabric in half along the grain thread (the grain thread runs along the edge)
Set aside a radius from one of the corners (set it aside so that there is 1 fold on the part)
Draw an arc of a given radius using a measuring tape, marking several points at a distance equal to the radius, and connect the points.
Draw an arc from the same vertex, equal to the sum of the radius and length of the skirt, using a measuring tape.
Add 2-3 cm along the bottom of the part for hem and warp.
Construct the second part of the skirt in the same way. (don’t forget to add extra fat!)
Add 1 cm along the top cut.
Pin the parts along the marked lines.
Cut out the skirt details.
5. The bias cut tends to stretch when worn and washed, to avoid this, you need to wait 1-2 days hang the cut out skirt pieces, attaching a small weight to the bottom (using tape or clothespins.)
6.Basic parts. Lay out the skirt pieces on the table. Using a long ruler or measuring tape, check the length from top to bottom in several places. Trim off excess fabric. The cut is ready for processing.
7. Preparing the skirt for 1 fitting:
Transfer the chalk lines from one side to the other using copy stitches along the bottom, sides and top of the pieces.
Sew the seam “needle forward” along the chalk lines.
Baste the details of the skirt, leaving 10-12 cm unbasted on 1 of the side seams.
8. Carrying out 1 fitting:
Try on a skirt.
Make adjustments if necessary.
9. Clasp processing:
Overcast the side edges of the front and back panels.
Unzip the zipper.
Attach one side of the zipper to the side cut, pin as shown in the photo
Baste the zipper, remove the pins.
Stitch using a special foot. Be sure to fasten the lines at the beginning and end.
Remove the basting threads using a seam ripper.
Process the other side of the fastener identically.
10. Processing the side seams:
Baste the side where the fastener is processed.
Sew this side side using a special foot, starting from the end of the zipper stitch. It is very important! Be sure to fasten the lines at the beginning and end. We stitch, retreating from the thread mark by 0.1 cm.
Remove the basting threads.
Iron the seam first from the inside, then from the front side. At the same time, iron the zipper. Attention! If the fabric is synthetic, monitor the temperature of the iron, or use a damp iron (cotton fabric)
Finish the second side seam with a pressed seam. We stitch with a regular foot.
11. Processing the belt.
Cut out the belt. Be sure to cut along the grain thread. D.N. must run along the stitching seam! The width of the belt depends on the model. Usually varies from 4 to 10 cm + 2 cm for seams. Length - St + 5cm. It's good if you have a whole piece of fabric, but if not, you can make a seam, just need to place it at the back!
Cut out a sealing gasket from non-woven fabric or adhesive fabric. The width of the sealing strip will be equal to the width of the belt + 2 cm. But if the interlining is thin and the belt is wide (as in my case), we glue the entire belt.
Sew down parts of the belt. W.W- 1cm. Iron the seam
Glue the sealing gasket.
Find the middle of the belt and lay a thread trail with contrasting threads.
Overlock one of the longitudinal sections with an overlocker
Machine stitch along the top edge of the skirt (to prevent stretching)
Baste the belt, departing from the thread mark by 0.1 cm. On the front panel of the skirt we extend the belt by 4 cm, on the back panel by 1 cm. Try it on again, make sure that the skirt is not too small or too big at the waist!
Sew, departing from the thread mark by 0.1 cm. Be sure to secure the stitches at the beginning and at the end.
Remove basting threads.
Finish the ends of the belt with a backstitch, bending along the middle line. To ensure that the ends are the same, draw turning lines with a pen. Be sure to fasten the lines at the beginning and end.
Trim the seams to about 2 cm. Turn out the corners and straighten them using a special peg (if you don’t have one, you can use a pencil or pen)
The circle skirt is the simplest model for beginner craftswomen. And if you are already comfortable with a sewing machine, you can finish the job in less than an hour. The individual pattern of the circle skirt ensures that the product will fit perfectly. Let's start making the drawing!
Pattern of a circle skirt according to individual measurements
The fashionable circle skirt sits at the waist. The current length is knee-length or just above the knee. Brave girls with impeccably slender legs can afford an ultra-short skirt. In any case, you only need 2 measurements:
waist circumference,
skirt length (measured along the side line from the waist). 
To construct a quarter circle on paper, which will become a skirt pattern, you need to calculate the radius of the small circle:
R = waist / 2π
Let's say your waist circumference is 65 cm. Then R = 65 cm / 2π = 10.4 cm. 
The radius of the larger circle will be equal to the length of the skirt folded with the radius of the small circle. To easily draw such a large circle without a compass, tie a thread to the tip of a pen or pencil. Measure the required length from the handle and tie a knot. Secure this knot with a pin in the center of the circle and, slightly pulling the thread, draw a larger circle.
The circle skirt pattern is ready!
If the length of the future skirt does not exceed 50 cm, and the fabric has a standard width of 145 cm, then cutting the skirt will be very simple. Fold the material 4 times and attach the pattern with the straight sides to the folds. You will get an even circle with a hole in the middle. Don't forget seam and hem allowances!
If the desired length is significantly greater and/or the width of the material is less than 145 cm, for example, 120 cm or even 70 cm, as is often the case with light dress fabrics, then you need to cut two semicircles, spreading the material in one layer. In the illustration you can see how the layout of a circle skirt pattern 50 cm long on fabric 120 cm wide will look like. 
If you managed to cut a circle of fabric in four folds, then in order to insert a zipper into the skirt, this ideal integrity will have to be broken. Cut the fabric lengthwise along one of the folds. This seam will be on the back, insert a zipper into it. If you get two semicircles, then it is better to make the seams on the sides. Insert a zipper into one of them (traditionally this is the seam on the left). 
The seam can be hidden (see top diagram) - it is preferable if the fabric is thin, or open (see diagram below).
The upper section of the skirt should be treated with a grosgrain ribbon or placed on a simple belt. From the remnants of the fabric, cut the belt so that the grain thread runs along its length, then it will not stretch. The length of the belt should be equal to the circumference of your waist + an allowance for freedom of movement of 2-3 cm + an overlap for sewing on a button or button of 3-5 cm.
All that remains is to finish the hem of the skirt. It can be neatly tucked, overcast or trimmed with bias tape. Fashion designers suggest leaving the cut completely unprocessed if the fabric does not fray.
