What's in Yulia Kalmanovich's makeup bag? Designer of the week: Yulia Kalmanovich Skirt, my design; Yves Saint Laurent shoes, Messika bracelet

Yulia Kalmanovich, a graduate of the Vyacheslav Zaitsev Fashion Laboratory, founded the brand Kalmanovich in 2009. And during this time, the brand managed to reach the European level: in its magazine CR Fashion Book wrote about him Carine Roitfeld, and also Kalmanovich presented in a well-known online store modaoperandi.com and dresses almost all Moscow fashionistas.
PEOPLETALK met with Yulia in her Moscow showroom, where the designer spoke about her plans, what inspires her, and many other interesting details from her life.

I remember how in my early youth I went into a fabric store and immediately wanted to sew a dozen outfits for myself. I decided that I would go to courses, to school Slava Zaitsev. And I was sucked into the funnel. I remember we had to do a small show where we presented our interpretation of the little black dress and jacket. Was on the expert council. She noticed me, which was very unexpected and indescribably pleasant and flattering - perhaps that episode became an incentive for me to create my own brand.

I had no fear then all fears and doubts began to appear already in the process of active work. That it won’t work out, that clothes won’t be in demand, that it won’t be possible to develop a business in Russia in the absence of a fashion industry as such, and so on.

Absolutely all my friends supported me. Moreover, morally - they praised, inspired, motivated, and in action: they bought my things, went out in them, shared reviews and passed them on from mouth to mouth. Then friends from glossy magazines and other spheres came along. In general, in this sense I am a lucky guy, and I am eternally grateful to my large and powerful support group.(Smiles.)

Perhaps, if we talk about the style of my brand, I am banal. Initially, I focused primarily on my preferences and taste, so my brand is a mix of styles and a game of contrasts: I like to combine fragile femininity with grunge and sporty chic. Lace with denim, knitwear with sequins, chiffon with rough cotton, flowy dresses with biker jackets and so on.

I spent my first salary on a bag Chanel 2.55. She's still alive. (Smiles.)

The latest collection is inspired by the supermodels of the 90s - Linda Evangelista, Helena Christensen, Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss. And I would like to see you in my clothes , Tilda Swinton, Cate Blanchett and.

The main thing my parents taught me: sensitivity, politeness, hard work.

I really like the times we live in. Now, fortunately, there is always a place and an audience for experiments. And I've always been inspired by the 70s.

I'm a big fan of mass market - Topshop, Zara, H&M– and lately I’ve been ordering a lot of clothes on American sites like Nastygal, Freepeople. I love combining items from affordable brands, accessories from big fashion houses and outfits of my own design.

I hope I never regret anything. Because now I understand perfectly well that all the difficult and dubious moments in life ultimately turned out in my favor.

In general, I am very whiny by nature - I can cry at the sight of a stray dog or at a sad song., I shed tears at snotty melodramas and children's cartoons.

When I meet a person, I always pay attention to accessories, and in men I evaluate clothing in general- costs of the profession. (Laughs.)

It’s not easy for me to get along with new people, but if suddenly, when I meet them, I realize that the person is “mine,” I instantly fall in love and be passionately friends for years.

I'm not a very sociable person, sometimes this bothers me, but I've learned to find a compromise with myself, because it is important: communicating with people is a necessary part of my work.

The thing that is always with me is a bracelet Cartier, given by my parents for my 30th birthday.

My happy place is Spain. Unfortunately, I don’t manage to go there every summer, but only there I can relax and unwind as much as possible.

My favorite book that changed my mind is the Torah.

“My favorite perfume right now is Jo Malone Mimosa & Cardamom. I used to use only one scent - Kilian Love don't be Shy, but then I changed it. And since then I've been experimenting all the time. I love that each scent is associated with a different emotion or time in my life.”

“For me, facial care is a whole ritual. It all starts with cleansing: I don't really like cleansing gels and use Ultraceuticals Ultra Brightening Foaming Cleanser. I immediately liked it for its light structure, which does not take a long time to wash off. Then I wipe my face with HydroPeptide Pre-Treatment Toner. By the way, my Eye Authority eye cream is the same brand.”

“DIBI Face Pure Equalizer fluid with a mattifying effect that lasts all day is responsible for moisturizing and nourishing my skin! With this, I stopped using matting wipes. Night care - Even Skintone Serum and Ultra Hydration Lotion from Ultraceuticals."

“Another product from the Valmont brand that has been “living” in my cosmetic bag for a long time is the Voluptuous Rescue Balm body moisturizing cream. He is the best (simply the best) among everything I have ever tried. Yes, it's not the cheapest, but it's worth the money. I also use Body Strategist Cream. Twice a week a masseuse comes to my home and does a massage and wrap using products from brands such as Guam or Styx.”

“When it comes to hair care, I have one rule that I haven’t broken for a very long time: never use conditioners. I am a supporter of masks! I give preference to products from the Japanese brand Lebel: they perfectly moisturize my hair. I buy masks from Salon Olya Rubets. When it comes to shampoo, I always choose Kérastase.”

I couldn’t find anything similar for a long time and just recently accidentally discovered the Diorskin Forever Perfect Mousse, which is almost identical in texture to Armani.”

“I also always have Bobbi Brown blush and M.A.C Cosmetics Upward Lash mascara with a small rubber brush in my makeup bag. I periodically try other mascaras, but I still come back to this “Makovskaya” one.”

Favorite clothes

I always wonder if the designers themselves wear the clothes they create? As for the Kalmanovich brand, its founder loves her brainchild and the invented style. For everyday life, Julia chooses simple things:

  • Men's boots and short ankle boots. Prefers an independent style. He wears stiletto heels only for very important events.
  • Full-cut skirts. Tight-fitting clothes constantly creep up when you walk, so it’s more comfortable to wear voluminous skirts with an elastic band.
  • Parka. A practical and versatile item. When it rains, Yulia takes her dad’s large parka, which plays the role of a good raincoat.
  • Bags. Julia prefers roomy briefcases that can be hung on her shoulder. In addition, due to how busy it is, it is important that your hands are always free.
  • Leather jacket. Julia sews her own jackets, preferring fashionable biker styles.
  • Hoodies and sweaters. Wears men's models.
  • Hats. In the summer she loves scarves, tying them in the shape of a fashionable turban. The designer gives special love to the bowler hat. Wide-brimmed models are not held in high esteem by Yulia.
