In the world of felt, as in the world of art, there are iconic names. One of these names is the name of Diana Nagornaya. Diana's bright, harmonious, creative works opened felt to thousands of people around the world. Each of her collections is a discovery, a breakthrough to new horizons.

Textures, lines, shapes, colors - everything inspires! Diana’s works give impetus to the development of new directions, ideas, and material research. The positive charge from them is felt literally on a physical level.

I am very glad that I had the opportunity to meet Diana - after all, before I knew her only from photographs and publications. Today I will tell you about this master. Before talking with Diana Nagornaya, I looked for information about her on the Internet. It turned out that there is practically no information about Diana on Russian-language resources. And even on his personal website, information about the master is given in literally two sentences. Our conversation was more like a casual, friendly conversation - Diana recalled funny incidents from her life, laughed, and joked. It was as if I was visiting Diana. And even over the thousands of kilometers that separated us, I felt the powerful energy and positivity emanating from a creative person.

Diana, what is your profession? Where did you study?

“I have an art education. I am a graphic designer. She first graduated from the Donetsk Art School, then from the Kharkov Academy of Design and Arts. At first I was engaged in interior design. I liked this job and I got good experience, but over time I realized that this was not enough for me. And I began to look for materials and techniques with which we would speak the same language.”

How did felt appear in your life?

“When I left the field of interior design, there was a period of creative search in my life. I worked in different techniques, including collage – I made portraits using this technique.

Once on the Internet I saw sculptural works made of felt by some Japanese artist. These figures looked like porcelain, and were made so delicately and gracefully that I was impressed for a long time. It seemed to me that this was something unearthly, alien. I began an active search to learn more about felting techniques. This was about 10 years ago. But there was so little information on the Internet - I came across some scans of old books that described the process of creating felt. And nothing more. But I was already intrigued. And I was very interested."

“The path from the first experiences with wool to the first collection took approximately three years. At first I made dolls - this was a logical continuation of my work creating portraits. My dolls turned out to be alive, with character. Owners were quickly found for them! For dolls, I made clothes using the wet felting technique.

But there were more and more ideas every day. I began to try, experiment and explore the material.

As I became acquainted with different techniques, I began to have new plans and ideas that were embodied in things. I felt that felt was a warm, wonderful material and would make good shoes, clothes and accessories.

I became very interested in making shoes. At first, I understood absolutely nothing about this, but since I had a great interest, I began to look for an opportunity to do the work well, so that I would like it. What was to be done? I had to learn everything myself. First in the workshops of professional shoemakers. I did not limit my work to felting felt boots and installing soles. I approached the issue fundamentally - I began to study modeling and design. But for this I had to go to a shoe factory 700 km from home. My mentor in this matter was the director of the factory, who himself is a fashion designer. I began to learn from him. When I have ideas and the desire to implement them, I simply cannot stop. I just can’t quit work halfway – I just keep going and moving towards my intended goal. I learned everything very quickly. I learned all the nuances of working with pads, installing soles, and modeling. I soon realized that I would not do the shoemaker’s work myself. Therefore, having developed my models, I found an assistant shoemaker in my city. The knowledge I gained helped me correctly set a task for a specialist and control the quality of work.”

How did you start creating clothes?

“When I became interested in shoes, I worked mainly with rough wool. Before that, there were experiments with Semenovskaya and everything that could be obtained from us. But then one day I came across merino. I had already trained so well on “our” wool that with merino I immediately got the perfect layout. That's when I started making clothes.

I had no tailoring skills. I had a more “sculptural” approach to clothing. I imagined how my models should look on a person, I had knowledge about body proportions - based on this, I looked for ways to create the desired shape. I did everything not technologically, but more intuitively. She created the first templates and fitted clothes to fit the figure. But without knowledge of tailoring, such experiments could not continue for long. When the first dresses appeared, I took them to the studio to have the armholes processed and zippers sewn in. There I asked the craftsmen to explain to me how the patterns are made. Having received initial knowledge, I did a lot on my own - I looked for books and articles, gained design and sewing skills, and began to improve my felt models.

Of course, all this did not happen in one day. To this day, in my studio there are two bags of “fruits of experiments” that I constantly carried out, creating new works. Each masterpiece was preceded by a long path of search, trial and error.”

Diana, how did your first collection come about?

“Having started experimenting with clothes, I began making dresses. My first collection “Seasons” was created in 2012. It seems to me that she was not very whole yet. But so expressive. I wanted to put everything into it! There were so many ideas that I had to restrain myself all the time so as not to deviate from the concept.

The collection was shown for the first time in Kyiv. Then I got my first experience working with models, makeup artists, music and catwalk directing. Then, at the invitation of Olga Antrope, I came with the collection to an exhibition in Sokolniki. Then Olga suggested doing a fashion show at the Latvian Embassy in Moscow. Representatives of the Klippan-Saule carding factory were present at the fashion show. I had to make a separate version of the collection, which included more carded works. This was my third fashion show.

The following year, the second collection “Watercolor Sketches” (2013) appeared. While the first collection was made entirely of wool—very little fiber was even used—in the second collection I introduced fabrics. There were a lot of works using the nuno-felt technique. There were sun skirts, half skirts, and long dresses. I already felt more confident working with different materials, silhouettes and colors.

The next stage of my creativity was the collection “Reflection of the Moon” (2014). It uses fine undyed wool. The idea was to make weightless, lightweight felt that would look like a blank sheet. And against this background I placed accents with bead embroidery. A lot of work went into this collection - a lot of hand beaded embroidery. Two girls even helped me with this. But when I am passionate about an idea, I am tireless - I can work days and nights with virtually no rest until I get the desired result. The whole work took 3-4 months. And now the new collection is ready!

There was a collection “My blue Shade” (2015) - designed in shades of blue and terracotta colors. These are coats and dresses with laconic silhouettes. Here I emphasized constructiveness. I used a lot of processing, set-in sleeves. All elements of this collection are graphic. Here work with form prevailed.”

Diana's collections were demonstrated at fashion days in Kharkov, traveled to other cities and countries, and were published in magazines and on Internet portals. Detailed photos of works and collections are available on Diana Nagornaya’s personal website https://diananagorna.com/.

WORK AND CREATIVITY

It so happened that creativity and work in Diana’s life are inseparable concepts. She works in a very busy schedule, doing a lot of custom work. And often there is no time left to work on collections. People who want to buy Diana's works live all over the world - in America, European countries, Russia, Japan. Diana is very well known abroad. Even better than in Russia. Many publications, interviews and photos in magazines and on English-language websites have long become commonplace.

Diana works in the workshop.

“I rent a small space in the city center. This is my personal space. I like to work alone, so that no one disturbs me. I don’t really like guests in the workshop - when friends come, touch the materials, start taking and moving things. The workshop is a small world in which I create. I have everything I need. There is always a large supply of materials - everything is arranged for work.”

Orders are very different. Diana takes on interesting projects with pleasure.

“Last year I had a “wedding season.” I received several orders for dresses for brides from Spain, Iceland, Ukraine, the USA and Canada. Working on orders is painstaking. Many people think that I have a whole workshop of craftswomen. But that's not true. I do everything myself, with my own hands. And felt, and processing, and embroidery. Only the shoe assembly is done for me by a professional shoemaker.”

Diana looks so young - you look at her photos today and 10 years ago - it seems that she has not changed at all. Always fresh and smiling. I was surprised to learn that Diana already has an almost adult son - he is 13 years old. Looking at her, it seems that she herself is skipping classes at school in order to dream and come up with a new collection)).

MASTER CLASSES - CHARGE OF ENERGY AND POSITIVITY

Diana has been conducting master classes for 8 years. But he does this infrequently - only 2-3 times a year.

“My teaching career began in 2008 in Shkatulochka. Before that, there were a couple of small classes in Kyiv and Kharkov. Now I continue to conduct MK - the topics, of course, have become more complex and varied. I teach how to make coats, dresses, bags with installation of accessories. I don't conduct master classes on a regular basis. But there are several organizers in different countries with whom I regularly collaborate.”

The geography of Diana's master classes is very wide. She conducted classes in Russia, Ukraine, Germany, the Netherlands, Lithuania, Latvia, and Latin America.

Diana says the following about her activities:

“My master classes are devoted not only to studying the basic technological aspects. It is important that they provide a powerful impetus for creativity. This is my main message to my students. Of course, we go through the main stages of creating something from felt. But there is always something spontaneous at MK. In every lesson, something special is born, an energy exchange occurs with the audience. People leave feeling inspired and creative. I tell my students this: “The technique of working with a template, the layout is the alphabet. We all know the alphabet. We all use it as a toolkit. But not everyone can write poetry.” I am always happy when my classes inspire students to find their own creative path.”

About once a year Diana comes to Moscow and conducts classes at the “Castle”.

“Olga Antrope and I have a long-standing friendship and joint creative projects. This is a collection for a fashion show at the Latvian embassy, and work on creating blends for the Italian factory DHG (The Italian factory still produces blends from wool and silk according to the “recipes” of Diana Nagornaya: London, Moscow, Milan, Rome, etc. fresh delivery to I came to the Casket a few days ago).”

RECIPE FOR SUCCESS FROM DIANA NAGORNAY

“Arbeiten, arbeiten, arbeiten! In which direction you take steps, in that direction success awaits you. Don't be afraid to overwork yourself. Don't be afraid to experiment. Creativity is a constant search. As someone great said: “You will always achieve success in what you do every day.” And if you do it with pleasure and inspiration, then success comes faster. This applies to everything: financial success, recognition, and creativity.”

CONQUERING HEIGHTS

All of Diana's hobbies are somehow related to creativity. Diana recently graduated from photography school.

“It was always difficult to find a common language with photographers - I wanted one thing, and they did something else. Now I can shoot at a professional level myself. Of course, learning photography is not a matter of one month. This is a huge layer of information – technical, technological and creative. So I continue to learn and explore. I love traveling! Now I always take my camera with me when I travel.”

Another passion of Diana is travel. She was probably going to live up to her name and conquer all the mountain peaks of the world. Just the other day, Diana returned from a trip to the Himalayas.

"That was not easy. I prepared for this trip for many months - I did cardio training almost every day - I did fitness, running, and Nordic walking. I work a lot, but I always have energy and inspiration to travel. What else do I want from life?.. I want to travel and further realize my creativity.

As for creative projects, I never stand still. I'm just switching. From time to time I switch from large to small forms - I make jewelry, experiment with embroidery. Then I return to working on collections again. My new collection is already ready in sketches. And several sketches were even made in the material.

I also have plans to work with art objects. I really want to create things that are not utilitarian, but simply inspiring and beautiful. I love to put creative pursuits into concrete, functional form, but perhaps it’s time to let go of myself and work more freely and intuitively.”

Diana became seriously interested in felt about 8 years ago. And during this time she has gone through a colossal creative path, creating works of a very high level at every stage. Thanks to this, Diana is known all over the world, her work is in demand, thousands of people are looking forward to her new publications and collections. Diana's works are distinguished not only by inspired boldness, purity of lines and harmony of images, but also by professional presentation, style, and very high quality. All this is worth learning. And this is worth striving for.

But more importantly, Diana is a cheerful, cheerful and very friendly person with whom it is easy and pleasant to communicate. She is open, full of positive energy and creative energy, which she generously shares.

I really hope that you fell in love with her as much as I do. And maybe you’ll even get to know her in person soon.
