Pillow trim. How to sew a piping to a product. Applications and printing

How to sew a piping with your own hands? This is one of the most common types of decoration, both clothing and accessories. Kant is found in clothes of different styles for people of all ages. It is the edging that gives a professional look to bags and covers, pillows and bedspreads.

Our master class will tell you how to make a piping with your own hands and sew it in several ways.

How to sew a piping: preparation for work

How to sew a piping with your own hands? Clothing piping and decorative piping are different from each other. For clothes, use a colored strip of fabric cut along the oblique. A flat edging consists only of such a strip folded in two layers, and a voluminous one with a cord inserted inside. In our master class, we will tell you how to sew a voluminous edging with your own hands.

Decorative edges for finishing accessories already have a thickening on one side, similar to a thick twisted cord. This cord can be plain or with decorative threads. On the other side of such a piping is a braid. Ready-made piping can be of all kinds of colors and patterns, but sewing piping with your own hands is not at all difficult.

The main rule for sewing piping is that the fabric should be cut at an angle of 45 degrees, obliquely.

The length of this strip should be slightly longer than the length of the surface being processed by the edging. If it is not possible to cut out a whole strip, it can be sewn from several strips, joining them diagonally and ironing the allowances. The width of the strip depends on which piping you will be sewing: 2-2.5 cm for a flat piping will be enough. For bulk edging, the stripe width will depend on which line you will be using.

We recommend making a small sample: wrap the cord with a cloth, chop or baste close to the cord and set aside the desired width of the allowance from the basting. For the convenience of subsequent work, the width of the allowance should match the width of the allowances on the part to which the edging will be sewn. Cut the sample along the marked line, remove the basting, open the fabric and measure the width of the strip.

So, let's take a closer look at how to make and sew a piping with your own hands!

Making piping

Prepare the cord and a strip of fabric of the desired length. Cut the fabric along the bias, the width of the fabric should be equal to the diameter of the cord plus a double allowance.

Pin and baste the piping by inserting the cord into the strip folded in half.

Sew along the piping using the zipper foot. Lay the line as close to the cord as possible.

Baste the piping on the front side of the part, aligning the allowances.

Piping on a straight seam

Sew. Unfold the part and iron the allowances to the side.

On a concave seam

Cut the edge allowance with triangles, not reaching the line 3-4 mm. Take it in. Continue as with a straight seam.

On a folded seam

Notch the edge allowance, not reaching the line 3-4 mm. Take it in. Continue as with a straight seam.

Right angle

Cut the allowance, not reaching the line 2-3 mm. Bend the piping and baste. Continue as with a straight seam.

With the recommendations in this article, you will not only learn how to sew your own cushion covers with rollers, but you will also be able to learn a technique that will help you make various products: potholders, napkins and much more using decorative roller trim. All this will make your home cozy and beautiful. For work, you can use the leftover fabrics. After you understand the principles of making rollers, you can sew any thing decorated with it.

To sew a pillow with a roller around the perimeter, you will need:

Cord (you can buy it at a sewing store), long enough to frame the entire perimeter of the pillow (take a margin),
- about 1 square meter of the main fabric, which will go on the pillowcase. Calculate the dimensions based on the size of your pillow,
- universal zipper, a few centimeters shorter than the length of the pillow,
- centimeter,
- sewing and cutting accessories.

The first thing to do is measure the cord of the desired length (with a margin of 1-2 cm) and cut the fabric that will be used to make the roller.

To cut strips for the roller, measure the thickness of the cord, add 2.5 cm for the seams and mark on the fabric.

If you do not have enough strips to make the entire roller, then connect the individual strips in the following way:

Insert the cord and sew the roller as tightly as possible, retreating from the edge of at least 1 cm.

Cut 2 pieces of fabric for the pillowcase, pin the roller as shown in the photo.

Cut the fabric of the roller at the folds.

Sew the bolster to the pillowcase.

The junction of the ends of the roller looks like this:

Insert a zipper.

Sew the second side of the pillow cover.

A wonderful pillow is ready!

Quite often, when sewing lambrequins, bedspreads and other decorative elements, such as decorative pillows, they use edging with a cord to finish.

Let us dwell in more detail on how to sew such an edging around the perimeter of a decorative pillow.

We cut a square of the desired size, not forgetting to add 2 cm for allowances. If the pillow is 40x40cm, then we cut the square 44x44cm. This will be the front of the pillow. To make it easier to sew a piping, we round the corners.

The back of the pillow consists of two parts connected by a zipper. The zipper allowance is 1cm and 3cm. For the back side of the pillow, I try to cut out the details more, then I build it along the top. If there is enough fabric, then you can simply cut out a 46x50cm rectangle and cut it into two parts, for example 46x30cm and 46x20cm. Or look at the circumstances, if you have small remnants of fabric, the main thing is that in the end, after the zipper is sewn on, the back part of the pillow is not less than 44x44cm.

After the zipper is sewn, lay out the back of the pillowcase, and lay the top (front) part on top and set both parts along the top.

Then we take the upper part with the right side up, put the piping on it with the wrong side up, retreating from the cut of the part by 5 mm (this is done so that you can later sew the seam without any problems), and sew the piping as close as possible to the cord with a one-sided foot.

For reference: the front side of the edging

Good day, dear readers!

Piping is one of the most common ways to "beautify" clothing. Kant decorate the edges of individual parts and emphasize shaped lines.

and if the seam allowances on the piece being trimmed are wider than those on the piping, it should be trimmed to the desired width.

We equalize the cuts of the edging and the cuts of the workpiece and sew the edging onto the edge of the part.

On flat, straight sections of cuts, on the edges of parts, the piping is simply sewn on with a basting hand stitch.

The seam allowances on the piping, which will be attached to the concave sections, must be cut with scissors, not reaching the convexity of the piping 2 - 3 mm. At the same time, we cut the seam allowances on the main part.

On the curved sections of the cuts, on the allowances, it is necessary to make triangular notches.

On the sections of the cuts, which represent the inner corner, on the seam allowances on the edge and on the part, right in the corner, a couple is made - a trio of simple notches of allowances.

On sections representing external corners, in the corner on the allowance of the edge and the part, we cut triangles of material from the allowance.

Now we go directly to the implementation of different types of seams with piping.

Kant in a stitched seam on the rib.

A piping is applied to the edge of one of the main parts (which side is more convenient for whom). The thickening on the edge is located in the opposite direction from the cut of this part.

Edge cuts and details are equalized, and the edge is outlined on it.

Then the second main part is superimposed on the part, with a piping sewn on it, their cuts are equalized,

and a seam is laid.

Then all hand stitches are carefully removed.

And from the front side, between the two main parts, connected by a seam on the edge, the piping will look like this.

Kant in the stitching seam.

If the allowances of the completed stitching seam on the edge with the piping are ironed to one of the sides and stitched onto the part, you get a piping in.

On the front side, along the allowances of the lines, you can lay one line,

and it is possible and two (according to the model).

Kant in the stitching seam, this finish is very common. For example, in embossed seams, when making coquettes, etc.

Kant in the patch seam.

Piping in an overlay seam is used when smaller parts cut out separately and decorated with piping are adjusted to large parts of the product or to the product itself. For example, planks, etc.

First, the edging is superimposed on the edge of a smaller part and adjusted to its edge, of course, in compliance with all the rules described above in the article on working with different cuts.

Then the edging is turned to the wrong side of the part and is swept out with a hand stitch.

You can stitch the “younger” part to the “older” one with one line

Kant in the seam.

The edging can be done in a stitched seam. This is when one part is turned exactly the same. For example, belts, pats, straps, flaps, pillows, blankets, bedspreads, pillowcases, etc.

Or when performing cut processing, a separate cut-out part, and you can also insert a piping into this type of stitching seam.

Naturally, it is impossible to fit all the variety of shapes and types, individual details of clothing in one article, so I will show only a small area of such an overturned seam.

First of all, the edging is superimposed on the edge of the part, the one that will be on top, on the front side. Their slices are equalized, and the edging is outlined on the part.

In this position, the swept edge of the part can be fixed with one line

In the same way, in exactly the same seams, a flat edging can also be made. It is much easier to do it. Some additional sewing operations are not required, a special foot is not needed, and with a sewing machine or overlocker, it’s not a problem to “crawl” and stitch where necessary.

The flat edging is “inserted” into the seam so that some part of it (according to the model) protrudes outward (2 - 5 mm).

All the best to you, dear readers! Sincerely, Milla Sidelnikova!

Knowing how to make cushion edging will be a very useful tool in your sewing arsenal. This detail will undoubtedly give the pillowcase a finished look and make you appreciate the skill of the person who worked on it. You can buy ready-made edging at any specialized store, or make it yourself, guided by this article. In this DIY pillowcase project, you will learn how to make piping and how best to sew it to fabric.

Required materials and tools:

  • fabric (for the front, back sides of the novelty and edging);
  • a rope of sufficient length to go around the entire pillow along the perimeter;
  • zipper (a few centimeters shorter than the width of the pillow);
  • pillow;
  • scissors;
  • measuring tape (ruler);
  • pins;
  • sewing machine;
  • iron.

Cut off the strips

First you need to cut out strips of fabric with which you will wrap the rope to make the edging. To determine the width of the strips, measure the circumference of the rope section and add another 2 cm to this figure. Cut the required number of strips so that, if they are folded, they go around the entire perimeter of the pillow with a small margin.

Making a long line

To get one long strip of fabric from several, fold them as shown below. Lay one strip face up in front of you. Position the second strip perpendicular to the first, face down and align the corners with respect to each other. Sew the strips at a 45° angle, sewing from the top left corner to the bottom right. Trim excess fabric 5mm from the seam. Straighten the fabric and iron the seam. So you get neatly sewn under 45 ° strips. Make the required number of the same connections to get one large strip.

The edging is ready

Wrap the rope with the fabric so that the right side is on the outside. Next, you will need to change the attachment on your sewing machine by installing a special foot for sewing in a zipper (use the instructions for your sewing machine if necessary). Sew the fabric as close to the rope as possible along the entire length. And the edging for the pillowcase is ready! As you can see, it's pretty easy to make. Next, you will learn how to attach it to the pillow.

Sew on the edging

Cut the fabric with the same dimensions as the pillow + 1 cm to the length and width. This will be the front of the pillow. Aligning the edge of the piping with the right edge of the fabric, pin it around the entire perimeter of the front side of the pillow with pins. At the corners, the edging should lie with a rounding. Make slits (do not hit the seam) as shown in the photo below. Still using the zipper foot, sew the piping to the piece of fabric around the perimeter, placing the seam as close to the rope as possible. When you get to the beginning of the edging, lay one end over the other.

zipper

Cut out a piece of fabric for the back of the pillow. One side of it should be 1 cm more than the width of the pillow and 3.5 cm more than the length. Lay the fabric in front of you with the long side horizontal, and cut it into two pieces at a distance of 10 cm from the short side. Now you need to add the zipper. Lay the small piece of fabric on top of the larger one so that they touch right sides. Attach the zipper to the fabric and center it. Then pin two pins opposite the end stops of the fastener, closer to their inner edge. Look carefully at the photo so that everything becomes clear. You can then put the zipper aside. With a regular foot on your sewing machine, start the seam by leaving a centimeter indent from the edge of the fabric. When you get to the first pin (and it is located 3-5 cm from the edge of the fabric), turn on the reverse on the machine and sew the seam in the opposite direction to strengthen this place. Then raise the needle and set the stitch length to the maximum to make a basting stitch to the next pin. When you get to it, again set the normal stitch length, make the same short stitch as at the beginning, strengthening it with the reverse. Bend back a small piece of fabric and iron the seam with an iron. Place the zipper in place face down, aligning it with the basting seam. Secure it with pins.

Various finishes framing the cushions bring them to life and add elegance to the furniture. You can buy or make all kinds of edging for pillows of any shape from plain fabric with your own hands. The easiest way is to trim the pillow with a cord, which is simply sewn on the outside to the finished cover along the edges.

Finishes such as piping and frills are sewn on the machine between the parts of the cover. The edging in some cases not only decorates the pillow, but also makes its edges stronger, and the pillow lasts longer.

Finishing the edges of a sofa cushion with piping in the same fabric as the cover, or in a material with a contrasting color, texture, or pattern, is more effective than other types of piping. Below is a piping technique for both square and round cushions. You will need cut pillow pieces to the desired size, an inner cover with filling, a decorative cord and bias tape, a zipper 10 cm shorter than the length or width of the pillow, and the usual set of sewing tools and accessories.

Attaching the piping to the case

First determine the length of the edge. To do this, measure the perimeter of the pillow on the front part along the seam line and add 5 cm to connect the ends of the trim. Do the edging. Pin and bast along the seam line along the 4 edges of the cover along the right side of the top piece.

Connect the swept ends of the oblique inlay overlapped one on the other either directly or diagonally. Make the ends of the cord thinner by pulling out some of the threads, and connect them together. Baste the edging to the cover piece over the joined ends.

Align the front and back pieces of the case according to the pattern and along the edges, folding them right sides together. On the edge of the back part, mark on both sides with pins a place for sewing in a zipper. Pin, baste and sew the edges from the ends to these marks.

Iron the seam allowances. Unzip the zipper, lay one strip of it face down over the piping. Pin, baste and sew the zipper to this seam allowance. Use the special zipper foot.

Lay the pieces face up on a flat surface. Zip up. Pin, baste and sew the second half of the zipper to the second piece. Unzip. Fold, baste and stitch the other 3 sides of the cover. Trim seam allowances, trim corners, turn cover right side out and iron.

Ready-made pillow with a zipper

Volumetric edging is made of fabric with a lining. This is the most pleasant cushion finish, as it is softer and more interesting than regular edging. The fabric can be taken the same as for the cover, or another, in harmony with the main one. You will need the right size front and back cushion pieces, medium-weight cushioning, 3" (9cm) bias trim for piping, your choice of fasteners, inner cushion in a pouch, and a basic set of sewing tools and supplies.

Cutting details for a cover with a three-dimensional edging

To determine the length of the piping, measure along the perimeter of the seam line of one of the main parts of the cover and add 5 cm for the connection. Cut out an 8cm-wide liner the same length as the bias tape, minus the seam allowance where the ends of the binding meet. Roll the pad tightly into a roll and lay it on the wrong side of the bias tape.

Fold the bias tape strip so that the rolled up padding is inside. Pin and baste the edges of the inlay along the liner, then sew as close to the roll as possible. Try not to flash it through.

Lay the front piece of the cover face up. Pin and bast the piping around the edge on all sides, making cuts at the corners. Trim the seam allowance to 2 mm at the ends of the piping. Connect the ends of the edging. Sew the cover with the clasp of your choice.

Cord trim is easy to do. A stiff cord reinforces the edges of the pillow. The ends of the cord are closed into an unsewn gap in the seam of the finished pillow when the cord is sewn with blind stitches. If you use another method of sewing on the cord, a 2 cm long cut is made with a knife to open the seams on one side of the pillow. For this method, you will need a ready-made cushion cover, cord (tourniquet, braid), an inner pillow in a cover and a regular set of sewing tools.

Sewing the cord to the edge of the pillow

To determine the desired length, measure the perimeter of the pillow, add 5 cm to secure the ends and more for loops at the corners. Insert a pillow into the cover, sew up the gap, but leave an unsewn section 2 cm long in the seam. Thread one end of the cord 2.5 cm long into this hole, fasten it. Sew the cord with blind stitches.

For decorative buttonholes at the corners, fold the cord into loops and sew a few stitches over the top to secure them. To make the loops the same at each corner, wrap the cord around the pencil.
