Mattress cocoon for newborns. What moms say

Buying a cocoon mattress for newborns is a question that often puzzles young mothers. This is a device that ensures the proper development, growth, and excellent health of the baby. This development of French neonatologists is one of the new accessories for finding a baby in it in the first 4 months after birth.

What is it - a cocoon for newborns

The mattress in the form of a cocoon is a kind of lounger, created from a material of increased elasticity. It is equipped with a soft zone for more torso support.

These devices began to be produced specifically for children who were born prematurely. Soon, manufacturers, as well as doctors, realized that a cocoon mattress would suit any baby.

The purpose of the mattress in the form of a cocoon:

  • the child can take the most correct position in a dream;
  • the trunk is supported without the occurrence of discomfort, constraining movements;
  • The mattress for the newborn comes with a safety strap that will protect the baby from a possible fall.

The described novelty allows young parents to create excellent conditions for the life of a child.

Who invented

The idea of producing a children's mattress in the form of a cocoon belongs to the kinesitherapist, specialist in pediatrics Daniel Salducci, who lives in France.

For 10 years he conducted research, observations. Their goal is to select the ideal design for positioning newborns. This is necessary so that premature babies can fully, painlessly adapt to environmental conditions.

Salducci worked closely with doctors from the Marseille Nord Hospital team, as well as Red Castle. The result was the appearance of such an important device as a cocoon mattress.

Follow-up observations by doctors helped to see the positive results of using a cocoon-shaped mattress for babies born just in time.

Popular Models

Both foreign and Russian manufacturers work on the market. It is not so difficult to choose a model of a mattress in the form of a cocoon that is suitable for a baby.

  1. Cocoona Baby Red Castle.
  2. Nest mattress ROXY-KIDS.
  3. HoneyMammy Boat Shaped Fixture.

The original French mattress CocoonaBaby from the manufacturer Red Castle

Red Castle is a leading manufacturer of premium children's products. Over time, the brand's products have become a standard of convenience and quality.

Mattress cocoons are a unique accessory. Several highly qualified specialists working in different industries worked on their production at once. It was necessary to take into account everything, even the smallest nuances.

What is the cocoon mattress CocoonaBaby:

  • it is convenient to use it on trips to the clinic, on a visit, for feeding, rest;
  • clear, detailed instructions for use are attached to the purchase;
  • pediatricians advise not to use blankets, blankets in the first 4 months. Cocoon is a more useful option;
  • the mattress has a fixing belt that does not prevent the baby from moving, but guarantees protection;
  • the sheet is removable, meeting quality standards, made of safe materials, durable, environmentally friendly. If necessary, you can buy an additional set of linen;
  • cover repels moisture;
  • the mattress block in the form of a cocoon is made of polyurethane foam;
  • so that the baby's legs have an anatomically correct bend, they are placed on a special roller under the knees that comes with the kit;
  • mattress tilt angle - 20 degrees;
  • a baby lying in a cocoon is grouped due to the special shape of the product.

Nest from manufacturer ROXY-KIDS

Too much bed space can scare the baby, so rather high sides serve as a limitation. So the rest will be comfortable, safe.

The mattress-nest fits easily into a crib, a stroller, is taken on a visit, on a trip.

Space bounding boards provide good protection. A newborn cannot be pushed, attached, strongly hurt.

This will be needed when he has to be put in his parents' bed.

The device is made of cold foam, the sides are filled with holofiber, which conducts air. The cover is made from natural cotton.

The standard height of the sides is up to 20 centimeters.

Boat from manufacturer HoneyMammy

The boat mattress from the manufacturer HoneyMammy is made to create comfort for a baby who is afraid of vast open spaces. He will get a feeling of warmth, his usual environment inside the womb, a comfortable sleep.

The mattress is made from natural premium quality cotton combined with eco-friendly flannel material. The latter is not painted, has a natural color.

The fabric is soft, pleasant to the skin, not capable of provoking an allergic reaction. The health of the baby is not in danger.

Ties on the sides are needed so that the device takes the form of a mattress in which the baby will be, as if in a small boat.

A useful feature is a removable latch. The accessory fixes the body in a specific position, without restricting movement, allowing it to develop.

Filler characteristics

Cocoon-shaped mattresses are filled with raw materials, the main component of which is polyurethane. This is the stuffing of the most popular, demanded models.

What are the main advantages of polyurethane as a filler for children's mattresses:

  1. Dust particles do not accumulate inside, the material is hypoallergenic. A property important for newborns.
  2. During production, the material is treated with a special solution with an antifungal, antibacterial effect. The mattress is not harmful to health.
  3. The filler is wear-resistant, will last as long as it takes.
  4. It conducts air well, "breathes".
  5. Increased elasticity allows the mattress to instantly restore its original shape.

Cons of stuffing for a cocoon:

  1. It comes across low quality raw materials, which quickly lose their shape.
  2. It is harmed by the direct rays of the sun, they lead to deformation of the cocoon.
  3. Polyurethane is flammable when it burns, releasing toxins.
  4. It may seem that this is too hard filler.

Main dimensions

Not all models of cocoon mattresses are suitable for a particular baby. Manufacturers indicate three parameters, selected according to different standards: height, length, width.

You can not buy a device before birth. The choice is very dependent on weight, which can lead to significant discrepancies.

Three sizes of cocoon mattresses presented in stores:

  • S1. For hospital use only. Recommended for premature babies weighing from 1.2 kilograms;
  • S2. Subcategory of the first parameter. Also for hospitals. Equipped with a safety belt, suitable for children weighing from 2 kilograms;
  • S3. For home use. Designed for a child weighing 2.8 kilograms. It is used as a mattress in a bed, a carriage.

The advantages of such products

Advantages of cocoon mattresses:

  1. They are shaped like a mother's womb.
  2. Equipped with straps to hold the child inside (not all, but many models).
  3. Mobile, easily transported from one place to another.
  4. They help to reduce muscle tone, completely relax the torso during rest.
  5. They will save the baby from discomfort in the event of colic (this is the curved shape of the product).
  6. Eliminate the risk of developing plagiocephaly (flattening of roundness in any part of the head).
  7. Improve the quality of sleep, the baby will sleep longer.
  8. With a cocoon, it is convenient to breastfeed a baby.
  9. It weighs little, has many additional accessories.
  10. The newborn does not need to be swaddled, he is free in his own movements.

The disadvantages of such products

Cocoon mattresses also have disadvantages.

They are not so harmless to the soft, fragile spine of a child. The shoulders will be rounded, the back will arch, the legs will rise - all this can harm posture. The device is good as a temporary option, but should not be used daily.

For children with pathologies of the spinal column, the use of a cocoon is contraindicated.

Other disadvantages:

  1. Premium price. It costs like 2-3 luxury mattresses filled with coir.
  2. Not too long of use. After six months, it can be harmful to health.
  3. Security disappears when the child begins to try to roll over.
  4. For term babies, the mattress may be too hot. On its surface, the temperature is not regulated.

Children's stores are ready to offer their customers a wide range of various mattresses for newborns. And many people have a question: what kind of children's mattress to choose? In the list of the most purchased products, there are not only cheap models, but also expensive mattresses with coconut stuffing. Recently, this list has included unique cocoon mattresses for newborns.

According to many experts, cocoon mattresses provide excellent conditions for a comfortable sleep. Today, such mattresses have appeared on sale in many stores, and the demand for them is constantly growing. Therefore, we decided to figure out what cocoons are and are they really so convenient for our babies?

Cocoon mattresses for newborns were born thanks to the efforts of French neonatologists. Long-term research in the field of children's sleep has shown that classic flat mattresses are not ideal. Moreover, they can even harm the development of the skeletal system.. Therefore, it was decided to create an ideal mattress that would create ideal conditions for the growth and life of the child.

In fact, a cocoon mattress is not a full-fledged mattress, which is due to its shape. Most likely, it can be called an addition to a crib. It really has the shape of a cocoon with a depression in the middle. It is in this recess that the child lies. Cocoons are intended for the smallest children who have just been born. And after a few months they can be transferred to standard mattresses with low pillows.

What is good mattress-cocoon

When a child lies in a cocoon, it seems to take on its shape. The cocoon is very comfortable and made of soft materials. Its recessed surface gently curves, so the back of the child is slightly curved. But this is absolutely nothing to worry about, since the bend is not so big - everything is calculated by experienced specialists who have observed more than one child.

The cocoon-baby mattress is good because it reproduces the conditions in which the child is accustomed to being in the womb:

  • The cocoon, as it were, wraps around the child and supports it from all sides - after all, he is not yet used to being in an open space and is even afraid of himself;
  • The surface of the cocoon is curved - the baby's back is in exactly the same position as inside the mother's abdomen;
  • The child will not fall anywhere and will never fall out of the cocoon - for this there are restraint straps (in some models).

The cocoon mattress itself is placed in a crib in the manner of a cradle installed in a stroller. At any time, the cocoon can be pulled out and the child can be safely transferred to another place.

Advantages and disadvantages of such a mattress

As usual, let's talk about the benefits first.

Reduces muscle tone

The main advantage of a cocoon mattress is that it creates special conditions for a newborn to sleep. Being in a slightly curved position helps relieve muscle tension. As a result the child becomes calmer, he is not afraid of his own movements. And if nothing interferes with the child, then he behaves much calmer, delighting those around him with his complaisance.

Relieves colic

A cocoon mattress for newborns helps to get rid of colic, which causes a strong feeling of discomfort. What do we ourselves do when our stomach hurts? That's right - we bend a little, which somewhat alleviates the discomfort. The same is with the child - being in the deepening of the cocoon mattress, he more easily endures the painful effects of colic. And this means that he will be less worried about his parents.

Plagiocephaly warning

According to many experts, cocoon mattresses prevent the development of plagiocephaly - this is a violation of the correct shape of the head as a result of sleeping in inappropriate conditions and on an inappropriate surface. But if the baby sleeps in a cocoon mattress, then his head will be supported in an optimal position, which will prevent the manifestation of plagiocephaly.

Freedom in motion

Another advantage of such a mattress for children is that it does not hinder movement. Lying in such a mattress, the baby will be able to calmly move his arms and legs, without being afraid of his own movements. Having bought a cocoon for your baby, you can forget about restless sleep for a long time.

Flaws

After describing such striking advantages, one might think that a cocoon mattress is devoid of any drawbacks. In fact, this is far from being the case, since even an almost perfect coconut mattress has flaws. In total, we can highlight the two most important shortcomings:

  • Very high cost - sometimes it is so high that for such money you can buy 3-4 standard coconut mattresses. But you can’t save on children, so many young parents are happy to buy such mattresses for their children;
  • A cocoon mattress is used only for three to four months - after that, the cocoon changes to a regular flat mattress (and a cocoon is very expensive).
  • But if you think sensibly, then if you have extra money, this will be an excellent purchase, made with the care of a newborn.

Popular cocoon producers

Perhaps the most popular manufacturer of children's cocoon mattresses is RedCastle. This is a French brand with production facilities in France. When buying a cocoon mattress from this brand, you can not worry about the quality of the purchased product - it will be a great mattress with great features.

Also on sale are cocoon mattresses from the Woombie trademark. In terms of their characteristics and structure, they still differ from the mattresses described by us, but their quality remains quite high.

The first six months of a child's life are a test for parents. The kid also has a hard time, he got into a new world to which he needs to adapt. Now more and more people are creating such “help tools” that both children and their parents need. One of them will be cocoons for newborns. These are things that are different in structure, which help the child to take a comfortable position and imitate the feeling of a closed space (as in the period of intrauterine development). These funds are gaining popularity among parents, especially since you can sew a cocoon for newborns with your own hands.

Types and advantages of cocoons

There are three size ranges of products (S1, S2, S3). The first two are made for premature babies in hospitals and maternity hospitals. The latter is for the home (weight - from 2.8 kg), the most common size.

Idea Development History

Facilitating the adaptation of premature babies in France began to study Danielle Salducci. She started using a cocoon mattress and saw results for almost 10 years: premature babies slept well and their developmental performance improved. Thanks to an alliance with the Red Castle company, a cocoon for newborns, cocoonababy, was born. This is the original product that started it all. Then the market was filled with other firms competing in quality (our production is also not far behind). Now most of the models are made for full-term healthy babies.

Baby cocoon sizes

The size of a baby cocoon depends on its type. Products are made for babies with different heights and weights:

  • for premature babies- they especially need it to maintain intrauterine position and comfort;
  • for babies with low weight(up to 2.7 kg) - such babies also need additional protection provided by the baby cocoon;
  • for children up to 4 months- this type of cocoon mattress is recommended for babies with a large weight (3-5 kg).

Correspond to the average height of the child, but are selected individually. Some experts believe that a baby cocoon can be used for up to six months if it is the right size. It is difficult to call such a decision correct. A child at this age begins to turn independently, which is important for his physical development. In a cocoon, he cannot do this.

Overview of popular models

Cocoonababy Red Castle

This is the quality of the French brand that started it all. The set consists of a pear-shaped base (polyurethane foam material, cotton pillowcase), a leg roll (attached under the knees, adjustable in height), a safety belt. Ergonomic dense base will not lose shape. The position of the baby is such that the head and torso are on the same level, and the slightly bent legs are higher. The weight of the mattress does not exceed a kilogram. The cocoon is universal in function (sleep, travel, wakefulness, visiting a doctor). Put it in a stroller for a walk or in a crib, but don't leave it unattended! The only negative will be the price - about 11 thousand rubles. Additional items to complete:

  • Blanket CocoonaCover. Convenient device, put on the mattress and fastened with Velcro at the bottom. The child will be comfortable, it warms well and does not slip. Made from 100% cotton.
  • Spare pillowcase. It is necessary for frequent spitting up, surprises when changing a diaper or feeding. It is easy to wash, does not require special care.

Cocoon "Yawn"

Our production "Cloud Factory". When compared with Red Castle, there will be the following differences:

  • The price is almost 2 times lower (5-6 thousand rubles).
  • Weight - "Yawn" is heavier per kilogram.
  • Complete set - there is an additional pillowcase from our manufacturer, which the French does not have.

Outwardly, they are similar, almost identical in size. Our manufacturer has provided additional accessories: a “milk+stars” blanket, a “Lamb” rocking chair, a lightweight cover Simple, a dense cover Heat.

Also a local product. The peculiarity of this model is the use of low elasticity polyurethane foam. This material is also included in orthopedic mattresses. At its base there are cavities for ventilation (the child sweats less and overheats in the heat). When assembling the base, no glue is used (environmentally friendly production of Farla).
Additional accessories are: blanket, pillowcase, carrying.

Nest for newborns Babynest

Swedish development since 2003. Many models are made in our country. There are large cocoons for twins. This is not an ergonomic mattress, but a soft flat nest with sides that can be tightened with a string. Like the classic cocoon, it is no less popular and wins in price (2 times lower). The base is made of cold foam, the cover is made of cotton, and the sides are made of holofiber.

Nest cocoon for newborn Sleepyhead

The company behind this Enfant Terrible® Design product is based in Sweden. It was founded by Lisa Furuland, who came up with a multifunctional item for her little son. A feature is the longest service life (up to 8 months, there are models up to 3 years). The non-ergonomic base and sides are made of antibacterial polyester fibers, and the removable cover is made of cotton.

  • Sleepyhead Deluxe - cocoon from birth to 8 months
  • Sleepyhead Grand - for older babies (8 months - 3 years)

Cons in the price. It reaches 11 thousand rubles. Using a cocoon for a long time is not always useful (and sometimes harmful).
There are far from all manufacturers in our market. It is good that domestic products are not inferior to foreign ones in quality. World renowned companies:

  • Red Castle - France
  • Woombie - USA
  • Babynest and Sleepyhead - Sweden

The second most popular manufacturer is the American company Woombie. Their cocoon mattresses have similar properties. The price of these products is also quite high. Considering that the cocoon will be used for only four months, the cost is a weighty argument in favor of looking for a simplified analogue.

The range of cocoon mattresses is not limited to this. Parents can choose a comfortable bed according to their taste.

Which one to take?

  1. What kind of cocoon do you need. Mattress or nest? The first option is ergonomic, but expensive. The second option is cheaper, but will not create an orthopedic function, rather an accessory that is cozy for the baby, though it will last longer.
  2. Who is the manufacturer. It is better to take from well-known models with a quality certificate. There must be instructions. Your child's health comes first!
  3. Consider your strengths. Brands are expensive things. Our models are not inferior in quality to imported ones and are cheaper. You can purchase a previously used product if it is of high quality (the base of the cocoonababy red castle does not deform even after several dozen children). If desired, you can sew a cocoon nest for a baby yourself.
  4. Product safety. It is worth paying attention to:
  • Base material - polyurethane foam and polyamide are considered safe.
  • Pillowcase material and any fabric in contact with the child's body (only 100% cotton).
  • Restrictive roller and safety belt for a mattress-cocoon, which securely fixes the crumbs.
  • Sides for the nest at least 15 cm - prevent the baby from rolling.
  • Color - give preference to light colors, where there are no dyes.

Adjust size

Should be according to the height of the baby. If it is adjustable, then do this: remove the cover, put the child on the mattress, setting the protrusion (limiter) directly under the buttocks. Then, put on the cover and lay the baby down again. Now he won't slip. As we grow, we change the position of the limiter.

Correct laying

Being in a cocoon, the head takes a slightly bent position (the chin touches the body). The legs are raised, there is a roller under the knees, so the baby will not be able to push off from the edge. Secure the child with a belt.

Safety belt

Wrap it around the mattress with the short end open towards you. Fasten the strap to the mattress with Velcro, and then to the child. Fixation should be soft and secure.

linen

Use the one created for your model. Easy care, can be washed with normal baby products. Do not wrap the crumbs when using the mattress, he will be warm in it anyway.

If the baby has begun to learn to roll over from his back to his side or stomach, then it's time for you to remove the mattress.

Advantages and disadvantages

The need to purchase cocoons for newborns is still being debated. But all opponents operate with the characteristics of children's products, their advantages and disadvantages. It remains for parents to analyze these positions and conclude whether the newborn needs a cocoon.

pros

  • the ability to be in a comfortable intrauterine position for the child;
  • getting rid of colic in the abdomen;
  • relaxation during sleep and improvement of its quality;
  • prevention of plagiocephaly;
  • ease of movement (the mattress is lightweight and easy to move without assistance);
  • comfortable position for feeding;
  • safety of the baby (the presence of special restraint belts).

Minuses

  • the position of the child in the cocoon is convenient, but not entirely useful for the formation of posture (it is not recommended to use it all the time);
  • differ in poor thermoregulation (more suitable for premature babies who need special conditions);
  • have a high price, and the time of use is limited to a few months.

The cocoon mattress cannot be used for children with congenital problems with the spine.

The benefits and harms of a cocoon for newborns: the opinion of pediatricians

Not all doctors unanimously recommend purchasing it, but in general they note a positive effect on the adaptation of babies and the prevention of plagiocephaly. But you can harm the baby if you keep him cocooned all the time. For harmonious development, it is important for him to be in the arms of his mother. It is necessary to spread it several times a day on the tummy, so he will learn to hold his head and strengthen his back muscles. Do not use the cocoon for more than 3 months, otherwise it will inhibit the development of new motor skills.

DIY cocoon for newborns

It is easy and even enjoyable to do so. You will get a double-sided nest. For this, minimal sewing skills are enough.
Advantages of self-production:

  • You choose the material and type of nest
  • Direct quality control
  • Minimum cost
  • Aesthetic pleasure

Of the minuses: you may not be satisfied with the result that you spent time on. Still, don't be afraid to try.

And now, the master class!

1. Choose the right size (on it you will prepare a pattern)

For small children less than 2.5 kg, it will be 50x30 cm (length / width)

For normal weight - 70x30 cm.

2. Make a pattern

Draw it on a large piece of paper (drawing paper, wallpaper). It does not take much time. The construction scheme is presented below. To help you will need a pencil, a long ruler, compasses and scissors. If you have a large child, you can proportionally increase the size.

3. We prepare the material

Base filler. Memory foam is suitable (this is polyurethane with an admixture of hydrocarbons), coconut coir, holofiber, synthetic winterizer, latex. The base should be of medium hardness. For example, pure coconut will not work (too tough). You can combine material. For example, a coir sheet with holofiber or padding polyester.

Side filler. Any loose material. Sintepukh, holofiber or down with a feather are perfect.

Fabric (cotton or flannel). If you want to decorate with decorative elements, remember safety. Nothing sticking out that the child can get confused, put into the mouth or inhale (small details!).

4. How to work

Transfer the pattern to the fabric and cut out 2 blanks. Use different materials, because the nest will be two-sided. Remember to add 1 cm for the seams when you cut.

Sew the workpiece with the right sides. Leave a hole for stuffing the bottom and sides. Turn out and iron.

Sew the edge, stepping back 2-2.5 cm. A ribbon will pass through the resulting hole.

Now you need to separate (flash) the bottom. To make this easier, cut out the center piece of the pattern, pin it to the center of your nest, and sew. For the same part, make a mattress, which then insert into the bottom. Sew it in several places, if possible (it should fit tightly). For example, along the edge and horizontal seams after 15-20 cm.

Insert the ribbon into the hole and stuff the sides tightly with filler.

Sew up the bottom. Turn the edges over and sew until the ribbon comes out. Tighten the sides and the cocoon is ready!

DIY diaper cocoon for newborns

In this example, we will make a cocoon with a zipper (you can also use Velcro, buttons or ties). The child should be comfortable, so choose the material that is breathable and seasonal. Make it very easy!

1. Cooking a pattern
Draw it on paper and cut it out. Consider your child's size. Perhaps the standard version will be too small for you and you will have to increase the parameters.

2. Prepare fabrics. It will take about 1.5 sq. a meter of matter that should stretch well and a zipper of 60 cm. If the child is already grown up, then add 10 cm of material for every couple of centimeters.

3. How to work

Fold the material in half and cut the attached pattern clearly along the line, without indenting the seams. Make 2 such parts. Cut one of them in the central part along the length - this is the front part where the lock will be.

Overlay all tissue sections.

Cut out the fabric for the collar (length 23 cm, width 7 cm) and for protection against the lock (length 61 cm, width 8 cm).

We sew the lock, having previously fixed it with pins. On the right edge - to the top, on the left - 2 cm from the edge.

We sew the main edges, sew the protection and the collar.

Something reminiscent of such a diaper is a knitted cocoon for newborns. This is a cozy stocking or envelope for sleeping, which can be crocheted or knitted. But here, even for simple options, skill is needed. Most importantly, take your time and do things with love. This will be the most tender gift for a baby.

What moms say

In general, a lot of positive feedback. What mothers of children who actively used the product say:

  • The baby is comfortable in it and sleeps better.
  • Shifting to the mattress helps with colic, the baby settles down, begins to grunt and do “his own business”.
  • You can take to bed, sleep together and not be afraid to crush. And finally get some sleep.
  • I fix the handles so that in a dream I don’t scratch my face and don’t poke my fingers in my eyes. This period is sure to come for many children. And the cocoon helps.

Some parents also talk about negative points:

  • Teach and unlearn. Moreover, in the latter case, you will have to “sweat”. The child does not want to fall asleep anywhere else but in a cocoon.
  • It's hot in summer.
  • Price!

Some babies can completely deprive their mother of sleep, and she is ready to give the last money to make life easier for herself and the child. Mom needs a resource! For care, care, life, yourself. It's good that there are such baby gadgets that can help. Let motherhood not be a test for you, but be filled with love and the joy of communicating with your child!

Babies sleep a lot in the first months of life. Therefore, in anticipation of the baby, parents think about which mattress is better to choose so that the child is comfortable. On sale you can find many models, among which there are special cocoon mattresses for newborns. We will talk about what it is, their features, pros and cons in this article.

Mattress-cocoon what is it

Cocoon mattress is a pear-shaped springless mattress made of hypoallergenic elastic material with memory effect. Designed for the first 3-4 months of a baby's life, therefore it has a small size. A waterproof cover is put on top of the body on the cradle. The top surface has a recess. Lying in it, the baby takes a physiological position close to the intrauterine one: the back is arched, the head is raised, the legs are bent at the knees (there is a special roller for this, which can be moved as the baby grows). Thanks to the sides, the baby feels protected, it is warm and cozy.

For a long time, orthopedists and neonatologists believed that a child needs an orthopedic mattress with a hard surface that does not sag under the baby's body. This is partly due to safety: the baby of the first months of life is limited in movement, on a soft mattress he can bury his nose and suffocate, as he is still able to roll over on his own.

But further studies of infant sleep have shown that spring mattresses are uncomfortable for the newborn and do not contribute to the proper development of the musculoskeletal system.

In the mother's abdomen, the child was in a twisted state. And for some time after birth, muscle tone does not allow the baby to straighten up and lie straight, as older children do. The body, arms and legs straighten gradually, as the muscle tone weakens.

Therefore, lying on a flat mattress is uncomfortable for a child. Also, he is uncomfortable being in open space. The cradles that were used in the old days created a feeling of comfort and security, reminded the child of his being in the womb. A baby mattress cocoon is a modern analogue of a cradle.

Features of cocoon mattresses for newborns

Cocoon developers claim that its special shape is beneficial for the health and development of the baby. According to the observations of mothers, the baby's sleep in the cradle is calmer and longer. But, like any product, the mattress has pros and cons.

pros

  1. Reduces the degree of fear of open space.
  2. Mobility. Due to its light weight and size, the mattress can be easily carried to any place and used independently without a crib.
  3. Prevention of plagiocephaly - abnormal development of the bones of the skull, which occurs from prolonged lying on a hard surface.
  4. Improving the quality of your baby's sleep.
  5. The position of the baby's head eliminates the possibility of choking when spitting up.
  6. Baby posture promotes muscle relaxation, which in turn reduces the risk of colic.
  7. There is no need for swaddling.
  8. Some models have seat belts that protect the child from falling out without restricting his movement.
  9. Thanks to the position in which the baby lies in the mattress, the angle of view increases, the baby can look around, which contributes to faster development.

Minuses

  • high price. It costs more than an orthopedic coconut mattress;
  • short period of use;
  • it may be too hot for children in the mattress, as the waterproof coating "does not breathe";
  • from the moment the child begins to roll over, it is not safe for him to be in a cocoon.

Cocoon mattress: needed or not

Most doctors approve of the use of a cocoon mattress for newborns and recommend that new mothers purchase one. But some doctors believe that the constant stay in a cocoon harms the development of the spine. They advise spending only daytime hours in it, and putting the child on an orthopedic mattress at night. Also, during the period of wakefulness, it is necessary to periodically shift the child to a hard surface so that he learns to roll over and can lie on his stomach.

At the same time, one should not forget that the use of a cocoon mattress ceases to be useful when a child reaches 4 months.

Reviews of doctors

What doctors say about cocoon mattresses.

Michel Bui, neonatologist: "I recommend the use of a cocoon mattress to my patients. According to my observations: babies in a cocoon cry much less, a cocoon can help correct hypertonicity syndrome, babies spit up less often and suffer from colic."

It is important not to forget about some rules of use:

  1. Lay the mattress against the walls of the crib so that the baby does not feel like in a boat in the middle of the sea.
  2. If you are using a cocoon, then the bottom of the crib should be in a horizontal position. Otherwise, the tilt of the mattress, reinforced by the tilt of the crib, will create an uncomfortable position for the baby.
  3. Cocoon is contraindicated in children with spinal pathologies.
Anna Sedova, pediatrician: "Cocoon mattresses were invented by French neonatologists who have long studied the features of infant sleep. I fully trust the experience of my colleagues. Feedback from mothers who bought such mattresses for their babies is only positive. I recommend purchasing such mattresses for newborns."

Manufacturers, prices

Cocoon mattresses are produced by Russian and foreign companies. Prices vary depending on the manufacturer, model, included accessories. The quality of expensive models and inexpensive analogues is almost the same.

Can I buy a used cocoon mattress

The mattress is used for a short time. As soon as the baby tries to roll over or shows a desire to sleep on his stomach, the mattress no longer suits him. This occurs at the age of 2-4 months. Babies at this age are light in weight, sleep almost without moving, so they do not cause any damage to the cradle. The materials from which the mattress is made have a large margin of safety. During use, no changes occur with the cocoon, and interchangeable sheets for any model are sold in stores. Therefore, you can safely buy a used cocoon, this will save money on other purchases.

RED CASTLE children's ergonomic mattress COCOONaBABY

The Red Castle cocoon is a unique development of French doctors that allows you to create a safe and comfortable environment for a newborn at the same time. The baby's sleep is an important factor in its further health and harmonious development, which is why mothers from all over the world choose the Cocoonababy cocoon. The baby cocoon was developed by French practicing neonatologists, kinesiotherapists, who have been looking for a solution for ergonomic positioning of newborns for more than 10 years.

The Cocoonababy cocoon mold is created in the south of France under the strict supervision of Red Castle employees, all materials undergo a serious quality check. With the help of the Cocoonababy cocoon baby mattress, Red Castle managed to take into account the advice of pediatricians and create a comfortable position for the child. Cocoons turned out to be such a successful and convenient invention that many French clinics replaced mattresses in cribs with them.

For night and day sleep of the child

Thanks to its softness and resilience, Cocoonababy®, an ergonomic cocoon, helps the newborn to adapt to life in the best possible way. In a slightly inclined, grouped, fetal-like position, the child calms down and feels confident.

Cocoon helps baby get quality sleep at night and during daytime sleep. It promotes balanced development by helping to completely eliminate or significantly limit the most common adjustment problems that may bother a child during the first months after birth.

The greatest effect is given by the use of a cocoon until the child is 3 months old.

Cocoonababy® helps:

Improve the quality and duration of sleep

Reduce awakening on startle or Moro reflex

Reduce gastroesophageal reflux

Minimizes the risk of developing plagiocephaly (flat head)

Helps the balanced development of the child

The cocoon includes a belt that keeps the baby in place and in the correct position. The belt also helps to soothe the baby without hindering freedom of movement. It is an integral part of the product and must always be used in conjunction with the cocoon.

Product Benefits

- Safety belt that keeps the baby in the perfect position.
- Removable adjustable restraint (located under the cover) allows the child to lie on his back in a grouped position, allowing you to adapt the size of the cocoon as the baby grows.

Dimensions: (LxWxH) 69x40x19 cm
Weight: 1 kg

When to use: From birth (from 2.8 kg) until the child begins to try to roll over or stops sleeping on his back.

The restraint belt is designed to prevent the very first movements of the child that could not be expected, but in no way restricts the child who has already grown out of Cocoonababy®.

A warning: Do not use the cocoon if it is not included.

For use in the crib. Make sure that the base of the crib is in the lowest position, the sides are at least 50 cm, the surface is flat. It can also be used on the floor if set on a clean carpet or play mat.

Important: Do not use in a rocking cradle or stroller carrycot.

In Cocoonababy®, the baby has freedom of head movement and can turn his head left and right. If the baby is attracted to the light from the window or sounds in another room or outside, regularly turn the cocoon 180° in the crib so that the baby is looking both ways - left and right.

And do not forget that whenever the child is awake, you need to take him out of the cocoon and carry him in his arms or in a sling. You need to do this as often as possible - the child loves to be around you!
